Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments even though Karin Slaughters books are all stand alone the characters keep showing up - like the investing duo Sara and Jeffery and then Sara and will. so, don't be hung up on which book in the series it is the stories/ detecting should be well knit.

stand alones : The Good Daughteris a suggestion. its highly rated on GR - personally I wasn't impressed

I read a lot of YA/Romance in last two weeks. Nothing impressed me much. Now currently reading Piranesi and Razorblade Tears. Surprisingly I am liking them both very much.

Yes. I have read A Man Called Ove by the same author. It was an excellent book, one of my favourites in fact. That is what prompted me to read Anxious People in the first place. I have completed reading it. And like all his books it was funny yet very emotional and deep.

Yes I am a frequent visitor to z library. Needless to say they have an impressive collection of books in different formats like epub, pdf and mobi, all for FREE. So go ahead, download and read all you want!

Finally wrapped up Babylon's Ashes in three months. It was boring.

Currently reading three books:
The Winds of War - second world war as the setting, a massive tome and am slower than a snail with this.
A Little Hatred - One of my favorite fantasy author. Was waiting for the series to be completed. With finale releasing last week, it was time to visit one of favorite world.
Heartsong - I haven't read a PNR in a long time, remedying that with this book. Loved first two books, hope this one will be as good.

message 317: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments @Em, thank you

The Namesake turned out to be a good book in the end. Only the first 75 pages or so was painfully boring. I have downloaded the movie on Hotstar. :-)

Finished reading Shesher Kabita (Farewell Song) by Rabindranath Tagore in English. Beautiful writing.

Currently I am reading My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk.

I see Dune and Shantaram a lot on my GR feed but never got around to read them. Perhaps one of these months...

message 322: by Ashish (new)

Ashish | 14 comments @Em, Shantaram I'm in the beginning, can't tell anything about it. But I would recommend Dune for anyone who's into universe building stuff. It's predictable from the start but the writing style is different so we get invested in the book. Try it out.

message 323: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4073 comments @Em, so far it's interesting enough. Finished 1/5th of the book and it's been mostly about Islamic art and paintings, famous Muslim miniaturists and calligraphers, and the many legends and stories centered around them. Less focus on the murder mystery so far but I am happy with the way the book has been presented.

I looked up Snow by Orhan Pamuk. It has a low rating of 3.59. Obviously not many enjoyed it.

Finished reading Confessions last week. It was fantastic, highly recommended for people who loves thriller/crime/murder mystery.

About to finish Battle Royale, another impressive tale.

Also read few other books but nothing worth mentioning/recommending.

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Hello Folks!
Currently reading "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Dumas. It's a mammoth of a book. 600 pages in, and I'm liking it so far but it has soo many sub-plots, which are all connected and I believe are driving towards what our protagonist is aiming to achieve (Predictable at times but liking it nevertheless).

I'm tempted to pick up Dune, once I'm done with Monte Cristo. Any comments on either of the books?
Would like to hear you thoughts on these.

I loved Monte Cristo. It was long but never felt like it was trying too hard or boring.

Haven't read Dune but have heard only good things about it.

Thanks for recommendation. Will surely read it. Is it connected to the "Three Musketeers". If so, better to read the three musketeers first and then 'The Man in the Iron Mask' ?

Visalakshi (vishu-potter) | 231 comments I've just finished reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It was an interesting book. Though it didn't keep me thoroughly involved with the characters like his next book did (A Thousand Splendid Suns was truly splendid), the author has done a great job in keeping the readers wondering what would happen next.

It's good read. Starts on a high and ends on a peaceful note.

Austin George | 4073 comments Currently reading Aavarana by SL Byrappa. So far below expectations. Story was interesting only in patches. Writing quality is not upto the standards of say Rabindranath Tagore or Jhumpa Lahiri. Maybe it could be due to the fact that I am not a Kannadiga and reading a poor English translation.

Long Shot, my first read. I have this ritual of reading a book on first of every year. I was disappointed. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Carrying over two books from last year, Venetia and In the Wild Light. Still in initial chapters, hope they'll turn out to be good.

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments I've started the new year with thrillers - finished Carla Negger's Night's Landing and will be reafing the following crime classices
1. A great Deliverance
2. The Bone Collector.
3. The Butterfly Garden

And of course - The Thursday Murder Club. Coincidentally, this is the BOTM for 2 groups.

Ive alsonstarted reading a hindi Poetry compilation called Sabrang and Im truly blown by it. Im reading it aloud to my daughter.

So, this has been a great reading start to the new year.

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments I had started the year with Project Hail Mary. Completed yesterday. Really liked the execution. My recommendation would be, to use the audiobook as follow along to your physical/ebook. Ray potter's narration made the whole experience better. When i upped the speed, it felt like Tony Stark rambling science with his enthusiastic tone.

Next up my list are:
1. The Thursday murder club
2. Rogue Protocol (excited for this)
3. The three body problem

Do most of you have subscriptions to either kindle or scribd?
Any recommendation for websites (free ebooks or almost free), especially for recent releases?

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments @Bookworm - I have a Scribd subscription - past 6-7 yrs and vociferously advocate it. The problem is that the new books are released a audio bks - it's great if you are ok with the same. there are some that Scri d hasn't managed to get a license for. but overall, my experience has been fantastic. Kindle Unlimited i haven't tried, but I haven't gotten good reviews of it.
but I solemnly am a great fan of pdfdrive.com and Z-lib.org for those absolute elusive books or have crossed my purchase limit for books.
