Sure Leena. That'll be great.
I hope to complete more of Christie's works this year. I love reading her works.
Till now, I have read only 13 (Poirot, Marple combined) of hers including standalones like crooked house and then there were none.
Have you read - Tommy and Tuppence of hers? They're less famous compared to Poirot and Marple series.

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments yeah, there was also a series, but okk. I didn't bother beyond 1,not even sure which one.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) If I may, I gave a Tommy and Tuppence book 5 stars, back when I was more lenient in my bookish experiments.

In France, police and detective novels are called Polars.

I prefer Marple as a character to Poirot. Miss Marple has a trick where she looks on her past with satisfaction, while I get a bit solemn and philosophic about life and youth.

Oh, that's interesting.

Same. I like Poirot but I love Jane more. I have not read all of AC's works, but Poirot is mostly about methods and using his grey cells whereas Marple has this strange (in a good way) psychological aspect of looking at the characters involved at the murder and connecting it to the folks of her village. I don't think any professional detective (which she's not) will ever take the risk of thinking in that sense, as it may mislead the investigation.
AC has created a really interesting Marple.

Will pick it up sometime this year. :)

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Or, Murder at the Vicarage is one of the best Marple (as per general consensus). I have yet to get to it.

I might add to that the little acts that Poirot pulls off in trying to solve a murder, such as going in a suspect's home while the latter is away and threatening the servants in giving him information, like he did in The Mystery of the Blue Train.

Add to that the entire debacle of The Big Four, and a completely different picture of Poirot emerges.

My favorite Marple books, apart from the short stories, are Sleeping Murder and 4:50 from Paddington. Also, A Pocket Full of Rye. :)

Oh yeah, I have read Paddington and Pocket full of Rye. I liked 4:50 Paddington too. Sleeping Murder yet to read. :)

And Big Four, I have no idea what was happening in AC's mind. Definitely not what I had expected.

message 613: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) It is rare that I can deduce the culprit's identity, and I couldn't for A Pocket Full of Rye. But I did manage to do so for both Paddington and Sleeping Murder. I don't remember getting even close for Poirot's books.

Christie wanted to write an international thriller for the Big Four. It was a disaster.

What are some other mystery series you regularly read?

message 614: by Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) (last edited Feb 02, 2022 05:04AM) (new)

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Agreed. Poirot's very few I could have a suspicion on and even then have been wrong so many times. Marple ones, I sometimes guess the who, but not the why and how, for sure. They're still entertaining for me.

I haven't read many series since few years, so it's mostly been AC and some standalone mysteries/thrillers.

Recently, Detective Galileo series caught my eye. If you haven't read, highly recommend to start with by The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino, Or even Malice by the same author.
I actually found these due to @EmLo.

Thank you for the recs. My recs don't fall in the mysteries category but rather in the cozies one. But then I remember that AC herself started the genre of cozies.

For mystery/thrillers, I recommend one of the usual suspects, Sue Grafton.

I agree about ACs murders being more difficult to crack. the best part is how so very different these 2 guys are.both are old toolder, are very satisfying their lives and have an innate streak of kindness in them. that's really what sets these 2 apart. J see this underlying kindness in House rhe TV Series he's such a grouch and so disappointed with life, but that kindness while treating his patients is amazing.

Yeah, Body in the library was good too.
Do you mean the Mirror crack'd from side to side (where The Lady of Shalott was referenced) ? Most of her works are released by other names as well, different edition, so I'm not sure.
Or is it another of her works?

It also has many movie adaptations, so if you have watched any of those then you might feel the similarities.
Since I haven't watched, I really enjoyed the book.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Bookworm wrote: "Yeah. Haven't the movie though. So many of Marple clues are actually in the phrases that the supporting characters use. It makes up for enjoyable reading experience. :)"

I never cottoned up to that. Maybe it is due to my appalling memory and that I never reread most books. I noticed this device of giving away clues in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Very daring of Doyle. Agatha Christie though, is really on par with any other writer in the genre.

message 625: by Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) (last edited Feb 02, 2022 11:37PM) (new)

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments They are very subtle. Like first time reading no one catches on to the clues. It's only at the end when things are revealed, and then if we go back (at the very instant) we do find it.
It's not like a solid hint either, she conceals it so well, it only helps Marple catch onto those things, along with all the other connections she has made.

I read the mirror crack'd from side to side few months ago, (view spoiler)
Similar incident in 'A Murder is Announced'.

So, maybe we can't call them as clues exactly. :)

I don't recollect 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. I only remember enjoying it, read it part of school work. It was ages ago.

message 626: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) In THoTB, the murderer himself literally points at himself and says he is the perpetrator. I usually don't enjoy that type of giveaways in MOVIES. But in books when done right it is terrific.

There is a time travel movie called Primer (2004) where you watch the movie from end to end, yet you don't understand what has happened. I didn't have a clue. It was only by examining the clothes and stubble of the two main characters that the puzzle is pieced together. Btw that is a recommendation :)

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Oh yeah. Btw, there was an actual hound involved right, it belonged to someone in the family, I guess. My memory's all hazy. My love for mysteries started from then. First Doyle and then AC.

Thanks for the recommendation. Will check it out. :)

On similar lines, I read a sci-fi last month Recursion (it has time travel aspects too). I really enjoyed it.

message 628: by Luffy Sempai (last edited Feb 02, 2022 11:39PM) (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Recursion is a cruelly neglected book by me. I don't know how I haven't read it yet. I took bigger gambles when choosing other books with more risk.

I gave The Mirror Cracked From Side To Side 3 stars only. I read it at a time when other, more modern books were beginning to become known to me. So I wasn't impressed by AC's offering. I'm not saying 'AC ki teisi' but there was more to be had for me out there.

Hey,
Recursion in your message captured my attention.
I love reading Blake Crouch for the innovative science fiction he writes always involving Time travel in it.

This one too was quite unique and I realised that it was a time paradox after I finished it.
It's been a while I think i should take it up for re-reading however I loved Dark Matter much more than Recursion.

message 631: by Makrand (new)

Makrand | 1353 comments On another note, People who loved reading Dark Matter and Recursion, please do me a favour and DO NOT READ Pines

It's a stupid book really. As if Blake wanted to write something just for the heck of it and published Pines as a result.

This is my personal opinion, I'd be glad if this worked well for any of you

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) There was this discord server that I recently logged out of; long story.

The roots of this community lies on YouTube, where an ex DJ in his late 40's being also an English fellow, hosted a review and general analysis of everything Science Fiction-y.

The host is called Moid, and the channel is Media Death Cult.
The style and presentation were nice and it was intriguing to join the YouTube channel.

I then followed them on discord.

Moid was always mentioning the cult (Join us!) and making jokes about mums, Phillip K Dick (guess what the joke here is), and anything in between.

Moid's Holy Grail is The Shadow of the Torturer. When I linked a GR one star review of that book, the thread was deleted from discord almost immediately by Moid.

Then I realised, this is really a cult!! Didn't see that twist coming. It was a cult. Wow.

Whoa!
I'm glad you got out.

I often wonder why do people expect others to like a book/music/an actor exactly the way they want.

If someone hates a book, they hate it and it's okay but somehow people don't get this.

Visalakshi (vishu-potter) | 231 comments I'm currently reading Atonement. I started that book long back and I couldn't get past 50 pages. It was too slow for me and had way too much details than needed. But I'd picked a book so I'll see myself through completion, no matter how long it takes! Besides, some GR reviews say it gets better as the story progresses. I'll keep you posted!

And yes, also reading Persuasion whenever time permits.
