I remember the paperback cover as a girl shown in a mirror with something behind her back.
Plot details: a modern girl has a mirror that has the phases of the moon carved into the frame. She starts seeing shadows of another girl in it and eventually she steps through into a frontier home with the other girl, who is so excited to have a dear sister! They befriend each other but the pioneer mother is strangely distant. Modern girl can't wait to figure out how to get home but it upsets pioneer girl.
SPOILERS:
Girl realizes the mirrors is connected to phases of the moon and that she'll be able to go home at a certain point. Finds graves all marked "sister" and realizes she's not the only one to have traveled this way. The pioneer girl doesn't want her to leave and tries to kill her with an axe.
You'd think with all this info I'd be able to find it but my brain isn't cooperating!
