Virginie lobbed me some softballs... I already planned to read both her choices this year... with her or without her :)

Virginie | 6124 comments Heeeeh, don't you dare read my recs without me! ;)

I chose only from your TBR, and those are books I put on your radar to begin with, I think... See, I can be nice. I'm not completely evil :D

Manju did similar... just had to dig through the books I added to my TBR on October 29th...

message 58: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5815 comments Did you still want to try to fit Sabriel in next week? I wrapped up my current audio and will want to start another on Tuesday. It's no rush if you aren't ready - I have an audible credit waiting and already own Sabriel :D

I'm ready... just waiting for you... my tomes aren't holding my interest, so they're on the backburner... been reading LitRPGs while I wait...

message 60: by Narilka (new)

Sounds good... wasn't sure where you wanted to read...

message 62: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5815 comments I was thinking of the team reading challenge. It looks like an official buddy read with its own thread, though it probably doesn't matter :)

90 seconds into the book and I was fast-forwarding to make sure this musical bull$hit wasn't going to last much longer... because holy $hit... it was like a horror movie soundtrack, overpowering Tim Curry, for a minute there...

message 64: by Narilka (new)

Narilka | 5815 comments LOL Yeah, it's temporary. It comes back at the very end too, to close out the book. So you're prepared.

Did I mention this is technically the start of a trilogy? It reads just fine as a stand alone. If you enjoy this one, we can queue up the other two for whenever you want.

At this point I'll probably start Monday.

For your recommendations bingo challenge! The Poppy War / Scourge of the Betrayer / Beyond Redemption

message 66: by jess (new)

jess (nu6586) | 1729 comments Norwegian Wood / Beyond Redemption

NW because I’ve read some Haruki and BR because this book has been rec’d to me a few times, I own it, but haven’t read yet.

message 67: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36289 comments Mod
I actually read Poppy War in November... not sure if I rated my November books or not... I need to go back and fill in the last 30-60 books I read... I skipped them in favor of keeping up with my 2019 reads...

Double recommendation for Beyond Redemption... I tried to join a BR back in 2017, but it's hard for me to push through ebooks these days... I keep checking to see if an audiobook has been amde, but no luck...

I'll try and do Beyond Redemption, otherwise I'll go with the others, which have audiobooks...

I think Kari, Virginie and me want to BR Beyond Redemtion this year, not sure when tho, you should join! I can also provide you with translations of all the german names ;)

message 70: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments From your shelves I pick Scourge of the Betrayer and The Way of Shadows. I think they have audio but not sure. :)
One I have on my TBR for this year also and the other I loved.

And I'd like to rec some of my 5 stars that I think you may like, because you and I usually rate the same. A Soul For Trouble, Song of the Beast

All 3 are easy recommendations :) ... i want to read Foundryside this year, Empire of Black and Gold is scheduled for a BR in a few weeks, and I need to get back to the rest of the Winternight trilogy at some point...

Not sure how I missed rating Way of Shadows... we BR'd it some time last year, and I continued with the 2nd book before abandoning... I read a synopsis of the 3rd book online... Scourge of the Betrayer is on the pile, since someone else just recommended it... this is a symptom of how small my TBR piles are, I think...

Both your personal recommendations sound great... probably going to go with those...

message 74: by Soo (new)

You can recommend whatever... the plan was to get 25 different people to recommend, but eventually I might have to just use the same people multiple times... at the moment, I still have about 15 open spots

message 76: by Angela Jr. (new)

Angela Jr. | 1126 comments How about The Giver series by lois lowry? We're currently doing a buddy read and the audiobooks are pretty short. There's four of them and we're doing one a week, starting on feb 1st.
I already finished the first one and it's a really intriguing set-up.
I'm also planning on starting Finding Audrey in the next one or two days.. also pretty short and I've heard good things.

message 77: by Angela Jr. (new)

Angela Jr. | 1126 comments Some more faves of mine are The Circle, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, The Humans and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
Didn't check if they all have audio, but they're popular enough for it

Chapter 15: This book is doing a great job of portraying itself as an autobiography...

I cant tell if the narrator is a bad singer, or the producers were dodging copyright issues with singing lyrics...

Chapter 21: Something about this book sneaks up on you... I'm loving it... (view spoiler)

Before that, I was just intrigued by how meta the book became all of a sudden... Vernon's book mirror's the book we're reading...

message 88: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments looks like you will be done with it by the time I finish first part. you are on fire!

I am reading Wasps at Easter, granddad Jaybird is hilarious but I hated him when he left Cory to play cards. poor poor kid had to walk. :(

I wonder which you are talking about... so many scenes are fantastical... hard to tell...

Like the one where the baseball might have been thrown into space...

message 92: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments I was talking about kids flying.

message 93: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36289 comments Mod
This is the first book I've read with Magical Realism, since I learned the term... the most jarring thing about it all is trying to figure out the real chain of events that occurred to cause injury, since I assume they were just running around with their arms outstretched "flying"

The zombie dog sequence is even weirder to me...

I kinda lost steam towards the end, between home and work, but I'm basically done now... you get me to read the most interesting books... reminded me of Heart's Invisible Furies, on a much narrower focus...

message 94: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments are you done? how many stars?

not getting enough time to read, I am still in first part. but I still remember important parts of it.

flying kids event was a thing that I want to forget about this story as it does not help story in any way. other magical events propel story towards that big finale, though I must admit I never saw that coming.

I digested the existence of ghosts, an evil monkey, candystick kid, the demon, death of dog and the friend (both were tear-jerking moments), the painting and it's significance, all were magical moments. on the other hand, deep down this story talked about faith, love, friendship, trust, religious beliefs, and pain. McCammon mixed all these in perfect portions to give us this beautiful stories.

what are you favorite moments? I will still stalk this thread to put my thoughts as I read the book. :)

Thanks! Furies was a surprise for me too.

I noticed your profile pic before but always forgot to ask. Is it inspired by The Son by Jo Nesbø in any way?

Sorry I kinda went silent... the new avatar was just a continuation of my hoodie theme from the old bitmoji image... like Silvana's avatar changed and got older, I figured my hoodie avatar could do the same thing...

Re: the book... I loved the first 2/3 alot... was hard to put down... I was always kinda surprised when serious topics crept in, like the bullying injuries and the (view spoiler)... but that's the price you have to pay when you're reading a book that isn't just an idyllic childhood portrait...

Another good example is the gambling you mentioned above... and the walk home with the salt...

I never really watched more than a little bit of Stranger Things, but I got that vibe a bit, with Corey solving the mystery, only to get in danger because he wasn't old/strong enough to handle the consequences...

That evil monkey thing is another aspect that becomes larger that life, like an overactive imagination, but the initial scenes in the church are just more examples of things not going to plan for somebody (in this case the preacher)

I started Spoonbenders... are you finding this as confusing as I am?

It seems to keep jumping around the timeline, a bit... which would be fine, except the characters in the timelines are confusing... mostly Irene/Maureen, I think...

message 99: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 36289 comments Mod
Okay, uh... Maureen's innocent exploration of 90s AOL online is hilarious... I actually first used the internet near the end of the AOL era... I can still here that dialup internet noise... some really old gas station ATMs near where I live still make that noise... it's almost nostalgic...

Virginie | 6124 comments I read up to chapter 4 and was very, very confused by the time jumps. I'm probably shouldn't listen to this one while playing WoW :p
I have to admit, this isn't what I was expecting at all. I'm mostly curious about Buddy.

Oh boy, I was still a kid back then, but I remember those dial up noises! :D
