This thread is open to discuss Indexing by Seanan McGuire.

Synopsis
“Never underestimate the power of a good story.”

Good advice...especially when a story can kill you.

For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected—perhaps infected is a better word—by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

That's where the ATI Management Bureau steps in, an organization tasked with protecting the world from fairy tales, even while most of their agents are struggling to keep their own fantastic archetypes from taking over their lives. When you're dealing with storybook narratives in the real world, it doesn't matter if you're Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or the Wicked Queen: no one gets a happily ever after.

Indexing is New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire’s new urban fantasy where everything you thought you knew about fairy tales gets turned on its head.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Started it on my way to work. But on audio, so it will take me a little longer to read.... Maybe... since it's on KU it allows me to switch formats without much of an hassle.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i also just started it on audio since i'm rereading and i'm noooot loving the narrator so far but maybe her voice will grow on me lol. i'm thinking maybe it's because i listen to it on 1.5x speed and it makes her voice a little bit higher? but i don't have the patience to listen at regular speed at all.

also i hate that when she said she was putting on 'spf 200' i automatically was like 'anything above spf 50 is useless and a lie' because i've been listening to the sawbones podcast way too much. although i guess this is a world where fairytales are real so maybe they also have extra strong sunscreen that is legit too ;)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Yeah, I'm a bit snow whiteish myself and I use spf 50+ for sun intolerant skin... But, here we use different stuff so...

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I tried 1.5 once. It bores me sometimes reading at regular speed, but it works better for me.

message 16: by Devann (last edited Feb 11, 2019 08:04AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments yeah i'm pretty pale as well and i use spf 50 too but really 50 blocks about 98% of UV rays and 30 blocks about 97% so i mean 50 IS technically better but i guess not as much as the labels/numbers would lead you to believe lol

also i'm amazed that there are people who listen to audiobooks at 3x speed. i think my head would explode.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I tried it once. Said people were crazy after 3 lines

Sibil | 100 comments I was perplexed too with the 200SPF and I honestly didn't know it existed in the real world, I was pinning it on being set in a fantasy world!

Anyway, I am going slow with this one at the moment, because I was counting on finishing my current ebook on Sunday but things didn't go as planned. I have read just the first chapter but... I think I was hoping in a love at first sight with this one and so far no sparks. I am not complaining, it's too early in the book for that, and I am enjoying the idea of it so much!

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments yeah she kind of just drops you right into it at the beginning so i think it takes a few chapters for what is actually going on to take shape

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments Sooooo I accidentally listened to the whole thing yesterday lol. I will get into more specifics when other people get further in the book [don't want to accidentally spoil anything] but for now I will just post my review that I just wrote. Also I am interested to see what everyone thinks of this because I actually saw quite a few low reviews for it on here. Anyway, review:

This was my second time reading this book and I decided to try out the audio this time. Despite still loving the story in general, I would definitely recommend reading it instead of listening. I did not care for the narrator's voice at all and I felt like she made a lot of the female characters sound very whiny or air-headed a lot of the time [not to mention that her male character voice was just ridiculous]. Sloane's voice in particular was just baffling to me because her persona is basically 'badass goth chick' and the narrator most often gave her this ridiculous Valley Girl inflection. It was absolutely maddening to me personally because Sloane is my favorite character and every time she had dialogue I was just audibly groaning.

But a bad narrator does not make a bad book, and I do really love this book. It's definitely a very original concept and I like how Seanan manages to both lean into all the fairy tale tropes and turn them completely on their heads. Also you can tell that this is really a subject that she enjoys because she uses so many variations of the stories and often links the archetypes in ways that the average consumer of fairy tales might not notice. I really love all the characters [when I'm not having to listen to awful narration at least] and think they play off each other very well. I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking to get a peek at Seanan's urban fantasy writing style but don't want to start with one of her longer series.

message 21: by Maja (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maja (majax1f422) I read the first chapter yesterday on the train and the idea does seem quite interesting so far, though I have a lot of questions and I'm wondering how the book will answer them. I love the concept of narrative patterns, and people getting sucked into them if they fit certain criteria. It's been hinted at a little, but I'm wondering if one the central themes will be a sort of question of free will and self-determination, and the struggles of people against the pull of their stories? It does seem very bleak that once a story has gotten too far along, there is simply no way whatsoever to stop it.
So the premise is definitely strong. Haven't got much of a sense of the characters yet, to be honest. I'm hoping that there will be more introduction to the investigation team and their relationships to one another later on.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments I got a late start but finished chapter 1 today. It is certainly an unique premise. I hope the characters become more likeable.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments I've read through ch 3 now and enjoying it more. The fairy tales they are attempting to avert are interesting how they try and play out plus there is some mystery with (view spoiler)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments ch 4 - 7

Things are certainly ramping up and getting interesting. I'm liking the characters more as we get to know them better.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments ch 8 - 9

REALLY??? (view spoiler)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments @Diane i think (view spoiler)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments @Devann (view spoiler)

Sibil | 100 comments I am proceeding slowly, but I am on my way to start the 4th chapter. So far I agree with you all. I am having some problems to really feel the characters, even if I am enjoying them (and I think the author is a bit repetitive with Henry's looking. She's constantly remembering to us that she's more on the horror spectrum than the beautiful one, but it's not a bad thing, at least so far, it's just that when we are speaking about McGuire's books I just expect masterpieces). Anyway, the idea of the story and her way to use and develop it is pure genius!

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i was reading other reviews a few days ago and apparently this was originally published as a serial online so i guess like with every chapter separate. from that viewpoint it makes sense to repeat a few things, but i wish authors would do a bit of editing with those kinds of things when they combine online things into a single book. i honestly didn't notice the first time i read it because i spread it out a lot, but i listened to it all in one day this time so that was definitely something that stood out a bit more.

Sibil | 100 comments Well, if it was published like a serial before than yes, it makes sense, but yes, a bit of editing would have been good in this case. And the serial thing also explains why we have every chapter so separate from each other. I was just wondering about that. To be honest, I am enjoying it, it's original and I think it adds something to the ensemble, but I was wondering, so thank you! :)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments I finished it last night and enjoyed it, although I thought the ending was a bit weak. Overall I loved the concept and how the fairy tale cases played out in the real world.

(view spoiler)

Sibil | 100 comments I finished it, too, and all in all I liked it, but I was hoping for something more... I really liked Sloane, and also Henry was quite a good character, so I hope to see more of them around (view spoiler)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments so it seemed like the reactions to this one were kind of meh but i think i'll probably reread the second one next month so i figured i might as well ask if anyone would be interested in doing another buddy read

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments Sure, I have it so might as well read it as a buddy read :)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments ok cool, is there a certain date that would work best for you? or maybe we should wait to see if more people are interested

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments The 14th or later works best for me. Sure we can wait to see if others want to join.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments ok so let's say tentatively the 17th, but i'll wait a few days to request the thread in case anyone else wants to suggest a different date

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments ok i'm gonna go ahead and request the thread for the 17th and hopefully a few more people will decide to join in lol
