I am looking for the title of a children's book about a young ginger kid (I forget if the kid is male or female). Completely fictional. The kidnappers grow tired of of the kid and return him/Her with a note. This book was written decades ago, if that helps. Thank you in advance.

It's a long shot, but The Safety of Objects by A.M. Homes has a short story called Looking for Johnny, which is about a boy who is kidnapped and then returned. It's not a children's book though.
Seconding "The Ransom of Red Chief". The kidnappers realize they've bitten off more than they can chew with the kid.
