PattyMacDotComma Wish by Chris Saunders is a very attractive children's picture book about figuring out what to wish for if you ever get those magic three wishes!

PattyMacDotComma Any youngsters who want to backpack around the world (and their parents!!) should read this cautionary tale See You In September by (now) NZ author Charity Norman. New Zealand, but not as you know it. Don't let my 3★ put you off.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Shadows of Self, book 5 in the Mistborn series, a few days ago. I just love the chemistry between Wax and Wayne! And I love the setting too. I really enjoyed the first 3 books (the first trilogy of the series), but I loved book 4 and book 5 is heading the same way.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have put The Beauty of the Wolf on the back burner for now. I enjoyed it at the start but having just passed the halfway point, very little has happened in terms of plot and character development. I do enjoy slow paced books but right now I'm in the mood for something a little faster. Now I have just got to decide what to read next...

That's what I thought. But when you referenced the series, I wondered if it was connected somehow.

It doesn't look like you're alone in that assessment. It has an average rating of 3.0.

Yes, it's average rating is low. A lot of people seem to have been put off by some of the content. That side of things didn't bother me but I just wish it had moved a bit faster or, if it wasn't going to do that, had been more character driven. At least I know what it's like now so I can read it when I'm in the mood for something slow paced.

Sorry Janice. I am just so impressed with the way she switched the story telling from cop to civilian. Absolutely no references to previous books.

So pleased you enjoying it. I love the world and the magic system in this series. After i've read the final book i'm going to get the short story collection which is set in this world. And possibly that of Elantris.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am currently reading the 2nd book in the October Daye series (the 1st is currently a group read this month) and it is getting to the point where I do not want to put it down. Every time I think I understand what is going on - I don't. Some really great lines!

Janice (jamasc) | 60102 comments I finished my monthly challenge read, The Raven Tower. I was enchanted with this book and the narration was spot on. It was so close to being a 5 star read.

Next up is Assassin's Quest for the buddy read.

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I just finished The Death of Mrs. Westaway. I liked it but didn't love it. It might have been because I figured out the ending long before it actually happened. I know. I know. I complain when I don't have a clue what's going on, and I complain when I figure it out too early.

In another reading life, I just went completely back to the awesome days of childhood and the world of talking animals. I read The Mouse and the Motorcycle to the kids. I sometimes forget how simple and sweet the plots of my childhood favorites were. It's a good break from adult reads once in a while.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished A Local Habitation for the monthly challenge. I really liked it and it is a great follow on to Rosemary and Rue.

I finished The Garden of the Gods for my movie challenge and a kill for the Corfu trilogy. Thank goodness I did not have to wait for another yearly challenge to finish it. I started the first book of the trilogy during the Geo challenge.

I am currently listening to Renegades, the first book in Marissa Meyer's new series. I did not like it at first, but it is getting better.

I will start the group read, Salt to the Sea tonight.

Margo | 11675 comments I ditched The Break it was chic lit at its worst! I have read and enjoyed all of her previous books but this one had a weak plot and daft characters. Marian, what were you thinking??

To console myself, I picked up Assassin's Quest last night for the buddy and also Memnoch the Devil for the challenge. Both beloved rereads 😊

message 420: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I've started The Lost Girls of Paris for the set in the 1940's task on the yearly challenge. It's set during and shortly after WWII. Interestingly, for those of you reading Salt to the Sea for the monthly group read, this one has a similar set up. Each chapter is told from the perspective of one of the characters; although the chapters are longer and the view is third person rather than first. It's the same time period as well, but a totally different situation. I'm liking it so far.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Rose Garden for the Movie Mania challenge. It was an enjoyable, easy read that I rated 4 stars.

I'm now starting Lancelot which is also for the Movie Mania challenge. I've been hearing plenty of good things about this one.

message 423: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60102 comments I finished Women Talking. I was a bit disappointed in this read. I was intrigued by the premise so had to read it.

I will start Ape House later today. It will count towards my movie mania challenge.

Is this your first read in the series? I was just looking at the first book in the series, The Crow Trap and the book blurb mentioned the TV series Vera. I may have to read it and go from there.

Yes, it is my first read, since in my country the books are not translated and released in published order...I have not checked if The Crow Trap is available here.

Kristie | 19338 comments I'm starting The Lost Man today. I read Jane Harper's Aaron Falk series that starts with The Dry and thought they were really good, so I have high hopes for this one.

I'm also starting Down Among the Sticks and Bones. I just finished a re-read of Every Heart a Doorway, so I'm ready to start working through the series.

I've already started Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder to review and it's a bit boring. Some of it seems like common sense, but it's repetitive. It seems like she had a good idea for a book and several examples, but not much else to really say about it. I'm about halfway through now and haven't learned anything yet. I'm hoping the last part where she gives practical suggestions is good.

Janice (jamasc) | 60102 comments I thought I had commented on this, but apparently I didn't. I finished Ape House the other night, reading till 1:00 in the morning two nights in a row.

Last night, I started The Golden Goblet. It's been on my tbr for way too long. I'm able to fit it into my movie challenge and my leftover stew challenge.

About the only place I could fit it in to my movie challenge is as historical fiction. I'd been holding that spot open for just the right book. Silly, isn't it?

That's okay. You pointed me to a Newbery author that I had not come across before and I added a few of her books to my TBR. Thanks!

Kristie | 19338 comments I finished Down Among the Sticks and Bones and started Beneath the Sugar Sky in the same series. I thought it would work for the MM challenge, but it turns out that it is only 174 pages. Almost, but not quite there. Oh well, the next in the series is In an Absent Dream. I don't have that one yet, but I plan to get it and it is just over 200 pages, so it'll work and I'll have killed off the series, so bonus.

message 444: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Ahhhhhhh! I actually finished a book today. It feels like years since that happened. I've been on go slow with so little time to read too. I finished The Obelisk Gate for the buddy read (although I failed at that too) and the movie challenge. Now back to Dune which I put aside before the last team toppler. I'll see if I can get a chunk of this is before starting the April group read.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm in a reading slump. I've given up on both books I was reading, Lancelot and The Follies of the King, and have tried to start several others and nothing is sticking. I just can't seem to find a book I'm in the mood for. So now I'm not sure what to do; reread a book I loved previously or keep trying out unread books until I find something that will hold my attention 🤔

First of all, go easy on yourself. I think we put way too much pressure on ourselves. Take a few days off from reading and then either reread something you loved or pick up something light and fluffy.

message 449: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Thanks Lilisa and Janice! I'm going to take your advice and give myself a few days break from reading and then I will either pick up a poetry collection or a light read.
