Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments No worries, Shirley. Even if you didn’t listen to the book, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm reading Death of a Dapper Snowman. It's a strategic choice. I recently bought the 5 books of the series for only 0.99 in total. They seem perfect for topplers and challenges, but the first one's too short to count. I'll read it now, so I can use the others in 2020 ;-)

Kristie | 19338 comments I plan to finish The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo today. I'm really enjoying it.

I will also start Caleb's Crossing for my RL book club. I don't have much interest in the book, but the ladies in the club insist it's a great read and they love the author, so I'm hoping it's one of those books that I'm thrilled someone else decided I should read. I don't have anything against the author or story; it just wasn't on my radar and didn't jump out at me as something I really want to read.

I expect to finish My Story for the monthly challenge either today or tomorrow.

I ended up reading more books than I expected to this year, particularly in the past few days. I've had no time to sit down and read, but we've been staying a little further away from our family and friends than we usually do while visiting, so we've had a lot of travel audio time.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I had to put my Mary Russell book back on the shelf to read Kim. Apparently, there is a tie-in. I have been wanting to read Kim for a long time, any way. I am only 50 pages into the story, but I like it.

message 1505: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments @Peggy, It is smart indeed. :)
I am also reading short books that are useless for challenges. I have so many only TBR and never get to them.

By the way, your books shows 350 pages to me. Are you sure it's so short?

message 1506: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments I finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo today and thought it was really good. Then, I started Caleb's Crossing, but I kept falling asleep, so I decided to read The Sixth Wicked Child instead. There is no falling asleep during this one!

I plan to finish both The Sixth Wicked Child and My Story before the toppler, then I'll restart Caleb's Crossing afterwards and see how it goes.

message 1507: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sandra, I think the ebook is 350 pages. The paper version on GR says 170 :(

message 1508: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11675 comments Peggy, I thought the rule was to go with the page number of the version you reading?

message 1509: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments No, not with ebooks, because page numbers are not always realistic. With ebooks you go for first paper edition that comes up (like with audiobooks).

PattyMacDotComma I don't count short stories on my Goodreads challenge list. I don't mark them as READ (I have a separate exclusive category), because they aren't "books". But I love them, and many are listed on GR. Here's one now.

Alice Hoffman has written some very popular novels, but Everything My Mother Taught Me is a short story that's included in the new Amazon Original Stories series. I was VERY happy with what the daughter learned!

mars (marsandphun) I'm currently reading The Suicide Shop, a dark humour satirical novella by Jean Teule

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I finished two books yesterday. On audiobook, The Huntress. I really enjoyed this book and gave it a solid 4 stars. On paperback, Rising Sun. I don't remember how I acquired the book, but I've seen the movie a few times. The movie was better in my opinion.

I will start:
Brave New World for the toppler. (audiobook)
The Darkest Night just because. Nothing like starting a new series at the end of the year. (Kindle)

If I finish the toppler early, it will be back to the December plan to end the year with Between Shades of Gray. (audiobook)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think I have the last book yet to finish in that series, Renee. It has been a long trek but an interesting concept. Yes, I still need to read The Long Cosmos.

message 1523: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments I am reading Where the Crawdads Sing for my book club meeting in January.

I am also reading a short story collection, Peces mudos, by Uruguayan author Rosario Lázaro Igoa.

message 1524: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished The Body: A Guide for Occupants and Waking Gods which means i just managed to complete my gr reading challenge for the year. Phew. Just in the nick of time.

message 1525: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I started and finished Between Shades of Gray today. It was a 5 star read, and an emotional one. I'm not going to start a new audiobook until Jan 1st.

message 1526: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments I loved that one too, Janice. It was just excellent.

message 1527: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19222 comments I am trying to knock off Living Dead in Dallas for the Dec Challenge, and finish Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal off from our monthly read whenever that was.

Two days, I reckon I can do it. Although I am currently trapped at the computer without my book by two sleeping older chickens who are inside for a break from the weather.

message 1528: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Death of a Dapper Snowman a few days ago. I thought I would have finished sooner, but Rob had some days off so I haven't been reading that much. It was a 5-books-for-99cents-cozy-mystery set so my expectations weren't high, but it's not that bad actually.

Anyway, I thought I would have time for another book this year, but I don't think that will happen after all. I'm now just reading a bit every now and then to make sure the book lasts until the end of the year. I have also started reading two travel guides to start planning two trips, one to the French island of Corsica, the other to Canada.

message 1529: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11675 comments It's such a shame Lisa isn't around -I finished The Toymakers and I can understand why she loves it so much. It was a truly original story full of magic. Definitely a 5 star read.

I start Sometimes I Lie today.

PattyMacDotComma A must-have to keep around for visitors (after you read them yourself)!
Midwinter Mysteries: A Christmas Crime Anthology is a collection of short, entertaining mysteries with only the season in common. Dates range from 1665 to today. I always love Graham Brack's Prague police stories, and his is the first.

Shirley | 1514 comments I just finished reading The Other Mrs. Miller It was my 100th for the year (my goal), but I wasn’t too keen. I couldn’t really believe that things in the story would happen like that in real life.

message 1534: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished my book and didn't plan to start another, but after just a few hours I started to feel lost and uneasy with the idea of having no book to read tonight and tomorrow. So I've started Hiroshima, which is very short. I don,l't really want to end the year with such a depressing event, but I've had the book on my tbr for a long time, and especially after visiting Hiroshima last year it's something I really want/need to read.

message 1535: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my last series of the year with Supernova. I enjoyed the audiobooks, although the last one was a little long. This series is definitely aimed at a younger YA crowd, but still enjoyable. The conflict grew a little old but I was determined to make it through. I am a glutton for "seeing how it ends".

On the other side of "not a series but a classic", I am still enjoying Kim. I am so happy that Laurie R. King finally made me read it. I cannot wait to resume The Game.

message 1536: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I don't want to start anything new so I've been reading a bit more of The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It. I have 90 pages left. It's unlikely I'll finish it this year as I'm making notes as I go along. But maybe. At least I'm making progress and I can save my other books for the 2020 challenge. I've set myself the goal of using my phone and Facebook less and use that time to read more, both audio and print. I wasn't happy with the amount of reading I managed this year.

Yes, it really is easy to read. Many of the non-English words my mind sees, but does not stumble over. It is quite different than the Jungle book text, but very readable. I like it very much. I should have finished by now, but I keep stopping to look at the map of India and try to figure out where things are taking place.

PattyMacDotComma I'm finishing my reviewing year with an outstanding new book, coming out in January. American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins is the terrifying story of a woman trying to escape the deadly, insidious Mexican cartels.

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I'm finishing off my year with The Darkest Night. It's utter drivel, but it's a mindless read with a bit of smut thrown in. I'm pretty sure I won't be reading more in the series.

message 1541: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Do you all make sure to finish your books today and start a new one tomorrow, or do you read across the turn of the year? I do the first, but Rob thinks it's weird.

If I can finish a book before the end of the year then great but it doesn't always pan out that way. I have 2 books still on the go and I definitely won't finish them today.

In the past I straddled years. This year I decided to finish what i was reading/listening to and wait a couple of days.

message 1545: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11675 comments I will be doing both! I am currently reading Sometimes I Lie and that will not get finished today but tomorrow I start The Ten Thousand Doors of January my first book of 2020 and also my first book for the TT challenge.

message 1546: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments I like to start a new book on Jan 1st, but not always plays out that way.
I might finish my book today. It is possible but it also depends on how much free time I'll have. It's a busy day. I am also reading a short stories collection, that I don't really care if I don't finish today, as soon as I am not in the middle of a one of the stories. Ok, that's weird. :)

Nope! I try to but sometimes fail. This year and last for example.

message 1548: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments It worked out that I've finished all my books. I finished The Darkest Night in the wee hours this morning.

I won't be starting any books today because we're off to the pub at 4:00 to ring in British New Year at 5:00. I'll be raising a glass to all of you in the UK. We'll be kicked out of the pub by 7:00 and will head to Earl's for supper. I love Earl's at Christmas time because they have got the most amazing festive decorations.

message 1549: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Kim last night and resumed reading The Game, which I had paused, so I will be bridging between 2019 and 2020 this year. I think I have normally started a new book on Jan 1st. I am ready to start The Ten Thousand Doors of January tomorrow though.
