I REMEMBER THE FIRST CHAPTER HAD A YOUNG BOY ON A TRAIN WHO IMAGINED PEOPLES HEADS FALLING OFF. HE LATER (DON'T REMEMBER HOW) FINDS THIS LARGE RING (END'S UP BEING FROM A CAROUSEL) AND IT TRAVELS HIM BACK IN TIME BEFORE HIS MOTHER PASSED AWAY. THROUGHOUT THE BOOK HE KNOWS WHEN SHE WILL DIE AND IS PLANNING ON BEING THERE TO PREVENT IT BUT SOMETHING HAPPENS AND HIS MOTHER DIES ANYWAYS AND HE IS FORCED BACK INTO THE PRESENT. PLEASE HELP I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS BOOK FOR YEARS. THANKS.

Is it children's chapter, children's picture, MG, YA, NA, or adult? What era is it set in? Do you remember anything about the cover? What is the genre--sci fi time travel only or is it kind of a coming of age thing with the time travel as a secondary part of the story?
Eek. Reading the original description hurts my eyes--here it is, properly capitalized: "I remember the first chapter had a young boy on a train who imagined people's heads falling off. He later (don't remember how) finds this large ring (ends up being from a carousel) and it travels him back in time before his mother passed away. Throughout the book he knows when she will die and is planning on being there to prevent it but something happens and his mother dies anyways and he is forced back into the present. Please help I've been trying to find this book for years. Thanks."

This is the likeliest one I could find: Back to Before. Here's a description from Amazon.com: 'Grade 5-8-In this time-travel novel, Slepian explores issues surrounding loss and death. Linny (Lionel), 11, finds camaraderie with his cousin Hilary, whom he is visiting for the summer at her new home in Vermont. During the past year, his mother has died and Hilary's father has left home. Checking out an odd section of broken road on a foggy morning after a big storm, they find themselves transported back, along with a brass ring they have found, one year in the past, to their old Brooklyn neighborhood. There they feel they can change the course of events that has caused so much disruption in their lives. Linny intends to prevent his mother's death, and Hilary wants to keep her father from leaving home. At the last minute, before they can alter anything but their own viewpoints, they are transported back to the present.'
