American History TV on C-SPAN3: 2 pm ET Sunday

Join us as the C-SPAN Cities Tour explores the American Story — this weekend featuring Independence, Missouri, on Book TV and American History TV. Located about 10 miles east of Kanas City, this city of about 120,000 was home to Harry and Bess Truman. We'll learn about the town they lived in, their connections to it and its history.

Harry Truman once said, "Every leader must be a reader." Book TV takes you to the Truman home to see what his and the first lady's favorite books were. We also head to the National Trails Museum Library for the story of how Americans prepared for and wrote about their experiences on the famous, yet difficult, pioneer trails of the 1800s. Independence was the point of departure for the California, Oregon and Santa Fe trails. Plus, we'll visit with other local authors.

------ Announcing a new book from C-SPAN:

madrano | 23742 comments The Stanley McChrystal book tickles my fancy, so i GR'd it and found Leaders: Myth and Reality. It's a 480 page book which covers leadership of many, including Walt Disney, Chanel and Robert E. Lee. Intriguing.

I also liked the idea of C-SPAN's Senate book. It's not listed on GR but they've apparently created an earlier one on the Supreme Court-- The Supreme Court: A Ispan Book, Featuring the Justices in Their Own Words. Not sure if it's along the same vein, though. I mostly interested in the architectural detail of the buildings themselves.

madrano | 23742 comments Alias, i can see why the Meacham talk would call to you. I'm going to mention it to Dan because he's nearing the end of Winston S. Churchill's The Gathering Storm.

I know i won't read the book but i am pleased to see that someone is noting the connection between sports and politics. I hope to watch some of that.

USA Today had an article about the Christie book. I don't know if it was intentional or not (they made no extraneous comments about it) but it seemed to me the book might well have been subtitled "If Trump Had Listened to Me". Why is it this President seems to have surrounded himself with men who are driven to be the center of attention? What a competitive lot.

I know I've mentioned this before, but if you can see the movie The Gathering Storm staring Albert Finney as Churchill you will not be disappointed. Last I looked it was available on Amazon Prime. The first time I watched it I got the DVD from the library. It's a terrific movie.

Madrano (madran) | 3137 comments Poor James Buchanan, always at or near the bottom of the ranking of Presidents. Having read his bio, as well as the two before him (Pierce & Fillmore), also lowly-ranked, i don't think anyone could have prevented the Civil War. Still, Buchanan erred dramatically but i don't know how he could have been worse than Andrew Johnson. Deb's Opinion.
