madrano | 23742 comments These sound interesting. I'll be honest, i had no idea China produced so many of the medicines we us in the US until just recently. Clearly, i thought it only made sense to produce those here where the patients are.

madrano | 23742 comments Yes, this was mostly it. For me, not having used medications for much of my life but counting on them when i did, the latest info about the medical industry (opioid crisis, hospital bills & this importing meds) has me discouraged. Ignorance was bliss.

madrano | 23742 comments The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just Nation by Brenda Wineapple sounds like a good book. Having read Andrew Johnson: A Biography, i realized what a mess his presidency was and how it impacted what we are today. It was written by Hans L. Trefousse whose bio of Rutherford B. Hayes i began earlier this year but abandoned due to my own lack of enthusiasm. Time to pick that up again?

I see that Trefousse also wrote a book about the Johnson impeachment. It is half the size of Wineapple's but i'm putting hers on my list, as the GR reviews are positive.

madrano | 23742 comments I don't recall Naomi Klein's book when it was released in '02 but am glad to learn about it now. No Logo sounds as though we could learn about corporate power and the consumer in one book.

I see the Black Hills of South Dakota are going to be featured. One of my best remembered museums was in Deadwood. It was a converted old time mercantile store and a pleasure to visit. Thanks.

My post isn't about the book but about her position. I never gave much thought to the Festivals, other than to read about them or attend. That Marie Arana is the literary director of the National Book Festival caught my eye. So, i looked her up & see that she edited the Washington Post's book review section (my favorite part of that paper), where i first heard of Jonathan Yardley, who was the paper's primary book reviewer. How about that? The stuff i learn without even viewing Book TV!

madrano | 23742 comments Sarah Milov's The Cigarette: A Political History sounds good. I hope to see her presentation before we hit the road. Both my folks were smokers, as were two of my siblings. To read about the political background would be new, as opposed to the health aspect, which i've already learned.

madrano | 23742 comments Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America, written by Dilbert cartoons artist, Scott Adams, could be controversial. This is a talk which might help folks decide whether or not to read the book. It appears GR believes it is a sort of self-help book, which might change the minds of some. That title, though, could annoy many people, imo.

This one caught my eye, too, deb. I think it sounds interesting. I'll try to catch the episode online and decide if I want to read it.

The low rating reviews are quite harsh. So it's definitely a library book if I do read it.

message 140: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23742 comments Yes, i noticed the low ratings. It appears he's been doing more than Dilbert cartoons for awhile now, which surprised me.

If I am remembering correctly awhile back, I thought we read or mentioned here her book, The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression

I'm not a fan as she is not a fan of one of my favorite presidents, FDR. She is a bit too Republican right wing for my tastes.

message 144: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23742 comments Thanks for that added info, Alias. I’m not recalling a discussion of her other book but i can see why her FDR dislike would unfairly bias her book of the Depression.

Last I heard, Scott Adams is a devoted Trump supporter... because of the times, there will be controversy.

message 146: by madrano (new)
