My October book is Dreams in a Time of War by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o.

message 129: by Cam (new)

Cam | 95 comments Some great books for October!

I had Terre Des Femmes by Nassira Belloula, which had a great premise (generations of women in the Aurès, resisting in different ways) and a lot of historical research including archival material being included, but ultimately the execution was poor.

I'm still trying to make my way through The Invention of Africa: Gnosis, Philosophy, and the Order of Knowledge, which is amazing but incredibly dense (and feels like work so I'm not always very good at picking it up).

Sooo behind on this - however still plan to catch up... Got stuck on Mia Couto's Tuner of Silences, think I might just forget about that one and read the rest?
Anyway, my October book is:
#10 The Radiance of the King by Camara Laye, which I bought used in a lovely little shop in Brooklyn, New York, when the world was still a place one could travel around at will :)

I liked it! And while the country is yet again in more lockdown, I am trying to catch up on some of my reading... I find the Africa 39 has to be taken in smaller doses, as it is 39 different authors, stories (parts of novels as often as short stories), it's different than reading a novel, I needs time and breaks to digest the different styles, settings, cultures and characters.
