Tantu By S L Bhyrappa
If it is half as good as Aavarana, i shall be delighted. This will be my 5th book by him and have read Parva (4.5/5), Aavarana (5/5), Sartha (3.5/5) and Sakshi (2.5/5) by him.
Started. An incident from his autobiography appears on page 27. Now I understand when he said that sometimes real life incidents get mixed up in fiction .
I also want to read more S L Byrappa, but I am not able to complete Parva. Grihabhanga by him is also very famous. Reading in Kannada takes lot of time for me.
I think Parva assumes that you are familiar with the story of Mahabharata and plunges into deeper waters of insights and (brutal) analysis. It is a must-read but suggest reading something like "Jaya" by Pattanaik just before it.
Have read Jaya... Had started Parva... But somehow left it after 50 pages or so.. will start it again sometime soon..
Jaya is short and good ..
Have ordered Kannada version of grihabhanga .. will read it when husband is there ..
My Kannada is rudimentary LKG level .. so I will need help .

Joining in for Tantu. Will be reading the Hindi translation. The book arrives by Sunday 6th Jan. Intent is also to gauge the translation quality, as I'm eyeing Vamsavriksha next.
Bhyrappa books read so far :
Mandra (4.25) Feb 2017
Saakshi (3.5) March 2018
Aavarana (5) August 2018
Bhitti (5) December 2018

Great. Me too am eager to know quality of Hindi translations. Checked today, he has been translated into Marathi too and avail on Kindle.
On page 18. Bhyrappa doesnt waste any time at all in describing “panchhi, nadiya, pawan ke jhonke.” Straight to the point.2 issues wrt translation :-
On page 16 - “Buddha, Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi all advocated non-violence.” I think he has mistranslated Jina (Mahavir) as Jinnah. Chalk and Cheese.
Minor issue - “Kendriya Vidhyalaya” is a proper noun and needn’t be translated to “Central School”.
So far didnt find grammatical errors and the font and spacing are very good. Wish the book had an attached thread type bookmark they usually give in fat hardbound books.
I thought Jinnah being Gandhi's friend until last few years .. he too was a non violence propogator
“Dont you read the papers?”Every1 seems to be asking Ravindra this question. Slightly comical and I wonder how Bhyrappa will develop Ravindra’s character. He reminds of that strict Gandhian character in Sakshi. Maybe modelled on Bhishma in Mahabharata.
On page 60.
Anticipation is increasing everyday seeing your discussions. 3 more days to get the book. Hope FK doesn't messes it up.
disappointed with the look and feel of the Hindi edition. looks like a purane zamane ka textbook. blank spine and blank blurb. paper quality mediocre. 794 pages of miniscule Hindi font.
dealing with FK customer care as the mrp on book is 350/-
FK listed price was 695/-
not sure how FK customer care will help or whether the book will have to be returned.
starting it nevertheless. let's see what happens....

the Hindi book has 27 adhyay.... every chapter having sub headings as numbers.

Ravindra's thought process on eating non vegetarian is so relatable.
whenever we travel, the preference is to find and eat in a pure vegetarian hotel. in some of previous trips, had troubles finding pure veg and eating in a veg+nonveg felt like a compromise. thankfully there are more pure veg places opening up in the last 5 years :)
difficult to explain to friends why this kolaveri :P

Since I have a Kerala upbringing and pure veg restaurants were almost non existent till a couple of decades ago, I am not very particular eating only from a pure veg place, Though it is preferable .. I always make sure they haven't served non
veg by mistake ... ..
veg by mistake ... ..
once brother in law's family had a discrepancy over the soup's bill amount.... the waiter and cashier checked with the cook and confirmed the billed amount is correct as it was a chicken manchow soup!!!
they regretted checking on the bill :P
veg restaurants are increasing even in Kerala in tourist places... thanks to lots of Gujarati travellers :) assuming they are a major reason for increasing demand of pure veg chains.

@Gorab, ICYMI - Divya Prakash Dubey's (Musafir Cafe and Masala Chai) new book October Junction has been released. Ebook on Amazon. There is something very soothing about his writing.
@Gorab.. the repeated incident was wrestling and trying to eat meat at non veg hotel and remembering his pet cow which resembles his grandmother

Loving the translation. Authentic!
Sample this: (page 73) - the part where the Gandhian school's inception is discussed.
"हमारा यह विश्वास है की जिसे विद्यार्थी अवस्था में स्वावलम्बन का चस्का लग जाता है, वह परावलम्बी बने बिना जीवन चलाने लगता है|"
Other places also, old time hindi is used - "जून का खाना"... क्षय रोग etc...

another incident from his autobiography:
"How much you got paid for attending this political rally?" episode :)

At page 72.. the tender coconut episode
Am not liking this much ..
Too much caste politics and sentimentality .
I absolutely seethed at the description of the menstrual purification part 😡

@Em - I am done with Chapter 1 and still unsure that Ravindra is the main protagonist. The guy is a bit too fond of tradition and nostalgia for me.

i somehow loved the coconut episode. in Hindi they've not translated it as "naariyal", instead the term "daab piyenge" is used which is kinda rustic and still funny.

about that Marwari episode, where the general store is built up...
i can vouch incidents that many Marwaris came to Bangalore Mysore and nearby areas around 80's, carrying only a briefcase having all their belongings. today they are playing in crores. a lot of it is attributed to Money lending business, wherein the bhola bhala illiterate people take money without knowing much about the interest rate on question, and end up paying their entire lives and still pass on the loan to their kids.
haven't heard any cases where land was captured illegally (that too Temple land in this case!), but sounds very much possible.

This is a mamoth of 1275 pages, but Aravind and me aren;t daunted by it.
We plan to study Tantu in and out.
I contemplate the title... guess Tantu means Atom in kannada .. but not sure
Do join us, Bravehearts..
BLURB
Tantu is a saga of post independence India, depicted through the main character, a journalist. The novel starts with the news of theft of an ancient idol of Goddess Saraswati from a Hoysala temple. The journalist visits the place, which incidentally happens to be his ancestral town. The canvas of the novel encompasses almost the whole of India and most of the spheres like education, communal politics, business, political corruption and destruction of traditional moral values. The novel ends with the clamping of the so-called Emergency by Indira Gandhi in 1975.
