Arvind wrote: "I cant remember but in the West more than once, have read cabaret-dancers choosing their profession because it pays much more."

"because it pays more" didn't seem to be the reason here. Felt like she felt proud of her body and wanted to showcase it to a bigger audience irrespective of the money... or maybe she wanted to find fame in a quickfire manner... or she loved danger...
may be i'm misinterpreting but never felt like she was doing it for money.

Have reached Anup's blackmailing part.... when the blackmail started, I thought I'm catching up with Smi... but then I read around 50 pages more and I'm still at the blackmailing part :P :P

At page 550. Towards the end of a big chapter 15.

E.T. | 549 comments “Jayprakash Narayan reformed a generation of (Chambal) dacoits, but he wasnt able to transform the mind of the ruling party’s leading lady (Indira Gandhi).”
I remember how Shashi Tharoor called her “Priya Duryodhani” (and Nehru “Dhritrashtra”) in “The Great Indian Novel”. It is a book which I would recommend strongly!

JP, Nehru, Indira, Washington.... are we reading the same book! :P
Interesting indeed.
I'm still stuck with Anoop, Ravindra and the rift has just started between Kanthi and ... whats her name.. Malthi? Sushma?

“The Great Indian Novel” - abandoned it a couple of years earlier after chapter 1. Have got this as a reco from you and Sri recently. Think I'm better equipped and interested to try it now.

message 172: by E.T. (new) - rated it 2 stars

E.T. | 549 comments @Gorab - That book is sheer irreverence - both for religious and political idols. It will take some time to grow on you. But it is genuinely funny.
I remember attending a litfest event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the book and I asked Tharoor - “How did u manage to escape the wrath of both the right-wing and the congress and even become a cong minister on top of that ?” :)

I don't know if mine still is rickety. Want to convert it to "was".

message 176: by E.T. (new) - rated it 2 stars

E.T. | 549 comments Tharoor’s answer was a bit predictable- earlier we were tolerant and stuff. But it beats me how he was made a Cong minister even today!
You know, in the book, Democracy was Draupadi which was ordered to be disrobed by Priya Duryodhani (IG).

Excellent analogy! And still he became a cong minister?? Nobody in congress would have understood his vocab :P

Not read. Among the first book acquired, and the book discussion which introduced me to this author... still lying unread on shelf.
Thought it was about Mahabharata... didn't know LW RW connections or references.

message 184: by E.T. (new) - rated it 2 stars

E.T. | 549 comments RW especially in India usually implies being religious.
In that book Bhyrappa has shown central characters eating beef. And he has asked questions and mocked them for their actions. How does Bhyrappa fit in with guys who say Mahabharata age had missiles and internet ? :)

message 185: by Prakruti (new)

Prakruti (prakrutim) | 4 comments Hello everyone,
Excuse me if this post is in any way inappropriate. I introduce myself as Prakruti Maniar, founder of Purple Pencil Project, which is a content discovery platform for Indian literature.
you can check it out online.
I am looking for readers/reviewers who can read books in regional languages, to write the reviews of those books in English. If either of you are interested, and I see that a lot of you are reading some amazing Indian authors that deserve appreciation, I would really urge you to consider writing for Purple Pencil Project.
If you have any queries, please drop an email to query@purplepencilproject.com. I would love to hear from you all. Thank you

E.T. | 549 comments @Prakruti Hello. I am posting the link of my "Indian non-English" shelf on goodreads. Please feel free to use any reviews for your project. However, I prefer to keep my reviews short and I usually avoid discussing the plot, so dont know if they will be useful.

I would love to write reviews.
By the way, where to write the reviews. Is it on your website?

Please clarify.

Thanks.

Have reached the part where Ravindra quits his stint as editor. With all the influence of ruling party over Tribune, hoping this part would be more interesting than the ongoing soap opera of Anoop and Honnati-Kanti!

Enjoying the part where there are conflicts of interest while building up a university.

Could relate to much of the stuff. Arguments about scholarship, uniform to attempt eradicating difference between higher and lower class, whether to allow for better food and infra facilities... complaints from parents who are willing to pay more for better facilities.

Felt like college days sprouted back fresh :)

The grand scheme of things is coming to an end.

Observing how he's bashing Indira and Nehru in the form of publishing those letters from Mr Talwar.

Got to know from a colleague that Anoop was quite a legend when this book was published. Because of his no reigns indulgence in lust, power and money.

An okayish read so far. Not so good... but would still rate it better than Saakshi!
