@Ujjwala, I would suggest picking up Hindi translation if u r comfortable with old Hindi vocabulary. I think the English translation could have been a little better.
On Page 385. Finally a story seems to be developing.I expected the police brutality to be far worse. As some1 remarked recently on our Republic day,
“The fundamental rights of the Indian common man have been devised from the POV of the policeman.”
The more I see the practically non-existent legal options avail with us common men, I wonder why a critical study of the Indian constitution has not been undertaken ? Just because Ambedkar headed it ?
Will resume reading this today.
After these discussions, want to revisit the part on how Ravindra and Kanti got married in the first place. Vaguely remember Ravindra had a "don't care" attitude towards marriage... and Kanti was coerced in by parents who were impressed by Ravindra's academic\job credentials. Not sure about the details though.

Done with Chapter 6 and 478 pages. At this point, I am a little angry at Ravindra and as baffled by him as Kanti. Maybe the reasons why he is refusing to talk will be revealed later. A mediocre book so far.
BTW, except for his principles of truth and non-violence, dont think much of Gandhi’s views. Those r as extreme as communism and cannot be the basis of a society realistically.
Was reading one more biography of Gandhi and felt a similarity - Gandhi and Ravindra both imposed their ideals on their respective families.

In his treatment of his wife too. And I was reading today in his biography that he used to sign his letters to a close lady-friend (his "spiritual wife") as "law-giver". The words "spiritual wife" are Gandhi's own.
Done with Chapter XI and 643 pages.Read for 2 and a half hours today continuously without any distractions at-all after a long time. And the Honatti-Kanti story has been quite interesting.
I don't remember which chapter I'm in. Havent read it in a while now,... Planning to pick it up again in the coming week.
I'm somewhere at the beginning of when Honnati and Kanti have started interacting with each other.

Onto Chapter 10 - Page 365.
Looks like another year for me to reach the end line.
Hows the reading going for you?
where have you reached Arvind?
Smi, you have abandoned or hanging through?

Have finished VIII chapters. Now am with Anup, who has been swayed by Kanthi after his airflight trip to Delhi..
Waiting to see what happens.

Might catch up with you. Have read till Chapter 11.
These chapters (10-11) feels like unnecessary filling up of pages without any important content.
Reminds of exam days in school :P

According to Bhyrappa (from his other books as well) - music reaches a new height and musicians get more passionate with their music... when combined with extra marital affairs!!!
Though Honnati's case cannot be termed "extra" marital :D
But I know you know what i mean.

By the way, while reading this book and discussing about it with a colleague, realised that Raagi Muddes aren't supposed to be chewed but swallowed!
And all these years I've been chewing them cursing the stickiness on teeth.

Hi Gorab
I was initially angry with Bhyrappa .. now reconciled as he seems to state facts and not sermonise upon them.. though I fear Ravindra is a man moulded with his own mindset .
I was also irritated at the way the girls in the engineering college are portrayed ..no other job than to see which boy has a speedy bike. I have never seen such girls who discuss faltu things in professional ( or even during my 11 and 12 STDs) colleges
We were all studious and serious , pwerhaps more so than the boys . I have concluded in my mind that Bhyrappa doesn't know females and is making up his own version of them..
Either a mother Goddess or a seductress
Have stopped at the juncture where Anup is forcing his mother to get a Bullet ( bike).

Done with Chapter 14. Brilliant !In a few pages, Bhyrappa shows us the vulnerability and hypocrisy of both Honnati and Kanti. Of the major characters only Ravindra has been spared so far, so lets see where this story takes us.
Add to that the short discussion on (Lord) Krishna reminded of the Bhyrappa I loved in Aavarana, Parva and Saartha. He is at his best when commenting on Indian history/mythology and philosophy.
Ravindra is not exactly spared. He may not be an adulterer but I find many character faults in him ...
I don't gell with people who do good only to the society and sort of neglect their immediate family ...
Something like holier than thou attitude

Perhaps Bhyrappa is showing how human beings are ..
And they they can never achieve a higher state of mind shorn of greed and selfishness .

Agree. Ravindra failed his wife and not the other way round. Though I think Ravindra was a good father.
Am again at s standstill due to professional obligations (can read only Kindle .. that too small books in fits and starts). Hope to catch up soon
I have left Anup dangling after a Bullet bike.. and am sure his mom will buy it for him.

At page 850..
Incidence of Anup being blackmailed . Many incidents in this book seem outright silly ,and my respect for Bhyrappa as a writer has come down a notch or two..
Learnt my lesson never to put up writers on pedestals... They are as fallible as you or me.😐
I don't like the ideal female being portrayed here. All sympathy towards Kanthi, though she behaves badly occasionally .

Don't know about girls, but on the contrary, in my professional college, I have never seen even a single guy *not* discussing faltu things :D

My reading life is now limited to a couple of hours per week. Got carried away by Kitne Pakistan in between (an amazing book! if you're into history thing)... and will now be back to Tantu starting from Chapter 12.

I can see that coming up. Now at the part where Honnati and Kanthi are having emotional tensions between them.

I don't mind any spoilers for this one... not that you gave any :)
so far finding it the second worst (after Saakshi). may be its because of broken momentum while reading... but not finding it very appealing. Going on like a non boring drama.

on to chapter 13. chapter 12 was unusual. A student of vidyalaya stooping down to this level for fulfilling his sexual desires!
somehow Bhyrappa challenges the stereotypes i have formed... musicians in Mandra, and Anoop here. although he went to cabaret and all in his school days and had similar minded friends. quite a character!

Rashmi's character was also strange to me.... so far haven't come across any lady expressing her willingness to dance in cabaret. so far the fiction I've been fed shows some kind of majboori for doing these things... and never inner desire.
Hi Gorab and Aravind. At page 975..
I guess Bhyrappa slightly went over the roof when he wrote this one. This is a very weird story ..
I don't know... I am angry at him .. finding him sanctimonious in this one.
Honnati is another weird person ...
As regarding to professional college and paid sex, unfortunately it is there.
Thankfully didn't know during my studentship ..would have been shocked and disgusted..
Though now life has taught me that it is just another aspect of the basic desires of life ... after my professional stint of nearly 18 years .
Won't be reading till next Monda as I am leaving for maternal home and can't carry the mammoth with me .😁

I think most characters are consistent except Honnati. Maybe Bhyrappa knows more about temperament of artists as he has also written Mandra. Yes, thankfully this is a non-boring read else I would have had to abandon it. Will pick it up again after a few days.

Yes that was very nice.... two stanzas of 4 lines each was written in Sanskrit and explained. Wondering whether there was Hindi font used in the English edition, or transliteration + explanation?
Don't know how true the point is regarding 16000 wives of Lord Krishna and cant be sure of the source it emanated from.... but worth a thought.

Yes I'm reading the Hindi translation and it is amazing. Content is translated very nicely, usage of a lot of old Hindi words. Adds to the charm.
Only flipside is that the publication quality is pretty bad.
