Jonathan Davis | 7 comments The Devil's Star

Excellent co-ordination of the different layers of the story and integration of the different characters into the different areas of Harry Hole's very flawed life.

Betsy | 11554 comments I read The Body in the Beck, which portrayed one of the most annoying characters that I have ever encountered. Self-righteous, opinionated, annoying, and a perfect example of the type of policeman you don't want to encounter.

Thanks for your comment Betsy. Did the character's irritating features make the story more compelling or more of a turn-off for you.

Hi Icewineanne,

Glad you loved the book, but what stood out for you?

Betsy | 11554 comments The story was okay, but the detective's characteristics overwhelmed the plot, etc. I doubt that was the author's intent, but for me it confirmed my intention not to read anymore in the series.

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1403 comments Glass Houses by Louise Penny. She sort of went off on a different direction this time. You start out with the murder trial and flips between the past and the trial. It was interesting and kept me engaged in the story.

Christopher Williams (thewrongwriter) | 7 comments I'm currently reading Don't Know Jack by Diane Capri. It's on my phone; I dip into it now & then. There's a surprising amount of action; perhaps I didn't know what to expect going in. The descriptions come across vividly. Good point.

Not-so-good point: The story seems to try too hard at mystery. Hey, we've got four big questions lingering in the air...let's add four more! We're 28 chapters in, maybe you think we should answer some of those? Nope! More to add still!

I don't remember all the up-in-the-air plot elements now, and I'm not even close to finished. Maybe this isn't the best place for such a comment, but it definitely stood out to me.

Great suspense. What stood out for me was the author's ability to make me feel sympathy for a character I should have disliked intensely. Well done!

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

The story wasn't that hard to figure out but I liked the way it's written.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments Hi y'all! For some reason I just now found this thread. I've read and reviewed a few books lately that has some real stand out aspects.
From world builder extraordinaire, Kelley Armstrong's Watcher in the Woods https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Watcher in the Woods (Rockton, #4) by Kelley Armstrong
Standout aspect- The little Yukon town of Rockton, the myriad characters who are almost never as they seem. And the Killer rabbits. Maybe.
For what it's worth, I rate this in my top five series.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments To continue my lucky reading streak: What Doesn't Kill Her.

What Doesn't Kill Her (Cape Charade #2) by Christina Dodd
I feel like I have such an investment in the characters. This is book 2. The first, Dead Girl Running, is one I also adore.
I'm also a fan of good plotting. Romantic suspense with the emphasis on suspense/thriller.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments One more because I just read it for review and was so excited to receive it. Okay, I think Ms White ROCKS. I found her through another wonderful series. (Angie Pallorino), but The Dark Bones is another terrific series.

The Dark Bones (A Dark Lure, #2) by Loreth Anne White

White excels in her settings and her intricate stories.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments It seems as if the above posts I have repeated myself concerning characters and plotting. Here's the thing, I am familiar with the above authors. And I look for authors who go beyond the pedestrian in their stories, characters, and settings. I also don't mind a good dog. Or rabbit.

Big White Lies by Jay Darby. His first novel with the main character Dan Porter. It's set in Australia and amazingly good for a first time writer. It drew me in from the beginning.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) The last book I read was Death by Chocolate Lab, and what stood out to me was the fact that the main character was vegan. I haven't read many books yet where that was the case!
