There's a teenage girl living in a big house with her dad (who I'm pretty sure is alwasy busy with something, can't remember what, he might be a scientist), she may go to an all girls school or at least used to but kicked out for misbehaving?
There's definitely moments where she's back at home and she talks to the cooks son who is in love with her. At one point she reveals in a shed when the cooks son brings her ginger cake (which was her favourite, don't know if it was specifically ginger) that she was raped or abused when she was younger by someone older.
These two develop some kind of romance through out the book.
Later on it's revealed that her dad has built this giant old fashioned cinema for her at the bottom of their garden but when you enter it takes you to some kind of alternate reality that consists of her old memories or some kind of perfecf life that she's forced to live. Her dad does this to protect her.
Whilst she's in the cinema she doesn't age but everyone else does in the real world. The cooks son ages somewhat and decides he needs to save her from this cinema/memory prison. He enters and finds her somewhat clueless about her situation but helps her escape in the end.
I remember this book feeling quite summery and a bit like the very start of atonemnet in that kind of hazy, old fashioned vibe.
It may be set in america, again i can't remember.
The girl character in this might be called Violet.
Not knowing the name of this book has really been bothering recently so really hope this gets found!
Thanks!!
