I can't see that this book has won an award. It was long listed for the National Book Critics Circle. Not sure what the American Book Award is, so maybe it does have that one.

Heather (heather_rodgers10) I have Jesmyn Ward's Men We Reaped and am hoping it fits this category. She has won the National Book Award twice but not for this book. Will this book still fit?

If you click on the title and look under "Literary Awards" in the details section of its Goodreads page, you can see that it has won a handful of awards in 2018, including an Eisner.

It won in 2017. Doesn't it have to be a 2018 award?

If my plan to read the entire Broken Earth trilogy falls through, I can read The Changeling. Thanks for putting this on my radar, Christiana!

Finding out the answer for you. I'm pretty sure it needs to be the exact book, but I've messaged Rachel (the creator) about it.

Oh shoot! I just did a quick google search and realized she made the best of lists/was nominated for an award but didn't win. Thanks for pointing that out. Well, I get to read another book this year!

actually, All Systems Red by Martha Wells won, tho Binti: Home was nominated. All Systems Red was really good, I'd recommend it! The first Binti novella counts as a book by an AOC set in or about space, but this one takes place almost entirely on Earth, so I don't think it would count.

message 83: by Octavia (new)

Octavia Cade | 139 comments I read Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay for this. It won the Lambda Literary Award for Bisexual Nonfiction in 2018, and it was excellent.

Candace (candaceloves) | 142 comments I’m going to read Kindred: the graphic novel adaptation for this task.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but Severance by Ling Ma won the Kirkus Prize for Fiction last year. Pretty sure that's going to be my choice!

message 86: by Jody (new)

Jody | 2 comments If the book won Goodreads Choice Awards Best- Debut Goodreads Author, does that count for #3 A book by a woman and/or AOC that won a literary award in 2018?

message 87: by Mandie (new)

Mandie (mystickah) | 218 comments I need some shorter reads in between my longer ones, so I'm going with All Systems Red.

message 88: by Trina (new)

Trina Dubya (trina_dubya) Exit West won the Aspen Words Literary Prize last year. Most of the awards it won were in 2017, and some prizes listed were for Mohsin Hamid, but this was a prize for the book that was in 2018. I finished it in 2-3 hours, and it is very well written.

message 89: by Asphyxiac (new)

Asphyxiac | 2 comments I’ll read The Friend, by Sigrid Nunez... It’s relatively short, and the Kindle sample was compelling. I can’t remember the last time I read a novel that was told from the perspective of an older woman, or even one that was written by an older woman. Shame on me for that.

message 90: by Asphyxiac (new)

Asphyxiac | 2 comments Wait, I’ve changed my mind. The Friend is better suited to the epistolary novel format challenge. I pick Washington Black for this challenge. :]

I am reading that right now, about 1/3 in, and really enjoying it. The characters are so well-drawn and engaging.

Kristina | 1 comments First, I read The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin, without realizing I actually needed to read the third book in the trilogy for it to count for this task (which I am happy to read because the fifth season was amazing!)...then I picked up Her Body and Other Parties to fulfill the requirement....and I just realized that won the award in 2017 and so I am about to give up on this task!! I don’t understand numbers and award season 🤷🏼‍♀️

Her Body and Other Parties has won several awards - some were in 2017 and some were 2018. She won the Lambda Literary Award of Lesbian Fiction in 2018, so it would count for this prompt.

One of my top 5 2018 reads! Great choice.

Samantha (iamsammie27) | 21 comments I just finished Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor and it was wonderful! It is the second book in the series, and even though it has a great recap at the beginning so you do not need to technically read the first one, I strongly suggest you do.
