Diana Welsch | 530 comments This is a patron query that I haven't had luck answering by myself. Here's what the patron remembers of the story:

It was a German folk tale about a dog. The dog's name begins with a "T" and is something along the lines of "Tripoli." It's not a common English name.

The dog scares away monsters. The monsters are called something that begins with an H, possibly Hov...something?

The dog is abused by its master. It ends up losing its tail and back legs. At one point it is cruelly hung from a tree.

The injured dog is eventually adopted by someone who takes very good care of it.

If this rings any bells, please post! This patron was very moved by this story and would love to find out its title.

Thank you.

Michele | 2488 comments Yikes, how awful. Does the patron recall when she read it? Does she have any sense of whether it was a new tale or a retelling of an old old story? Did they read it in an anthology or as a standalone? Were there any illustrations?

Diana Welsch | 530 comments Someone on another forum identified this folktale as The Hobyas. It sounds pretty promising but I'm waiting to hear back from the patron before I move it to Solved.
