SOLVED-YA, girl goes to live with father in reenactment village [s]

As far as I can remember, the teenage protagonist in this book goes to live with her father who is some type of social scientist. He lives in a village that recreates what it was like in an earlier period of time. I think her mother has cancer/some disease, which is why she is sent to live with her father.

I remember random, kind of insignificant details, but nothing much. There is a vivid scene in which a goat gets slaughtered for meat. She has to wash her hair with clay. I think there's a guy slightly older than her in the village who she has some type of romance with.

I probably read this in the early/mid 2000s.
