message 812: by Pedro (new)

Pedro Brasil Hi, my name is Pedro and I'm from Brazil, I started reading and using goodreads since 2016 but I wasn't that much active in here, but I'm planning to return now, I started this account because I wanted someone to talk about my reads since I don't have anyone that likes to read in my personal life, and I hope to find it here. I'm more focused in nonfiction this year but I also want to read some fictional books as well. Anyway, I hope to make some friends in this community, be free to add me.
PS: English is not my first language so forgive me if I made any mistake while writing this haha

I'm from southern California in beautiful vineyards/winery area.
I love all kinds of books, i've gone less into YA and more into other categories, but WWII, historical fiction, dystopian and biographies are my favorite.

I think I found this group on my feed. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My goal for 2019 is 100...its a little ambitious (last year I only made it to 40) but i'll keep trying till I succeed!

message 820: by Hailey (new)

Hailey (omgreading) Hello! I'm Hailey and I live in Southern Georgia. I am 29, but creeping up on 30 in August.

I feel I am an eclectic reader, but I have noticed that I enjoy memoirs and non-fiction a good bit. I love contemporary fiction and satire. I do read a decent amount of YA, especially this year since I am trying my best to finish all of the series I've started. And then I like to indulge in Bizarro fiction every now and again.

I found this group because I saw one of the people on my friends' list was in it.

I would love to read 50 books this year, but that is an optimistic goal, so 24 is probably a safer bet, but I will aim for higher. I used to read about 50 -75 books a year and then a tragedy struck that I connect with reading, so for the past few years I am lucky to read 10. I am hoping I can get back to reading like I used to.

I'm a little late to the game, but hopefully I can still reach my goals.

I'm happy to have found this website, I'm also disappointed not to have found it before hehe. I am a big book fanatic especially thriller and crime. I can not wait to discover several new authors and expand my book repertoire.

My goal for 2019 would be to read at least 50 books. I have already read five books. :)

It's a pleasure to meet you all,

Pooja | 6 comments Hello,

I am Pooja from India. I like to read classics, fiction, fantasies, non-fiction. I am new to goodreads - always knew of its existence but never explored it before. This group was in the list of suggestions I found by clicking 'My Group Discussions' icon on the top right corner. My reading goal for 2019 is 10 books and likely more.

I liked the concept of this group and the fact that I can track my progress right here.

message 838: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) Hello! I ended up here for the Nonfiction Growth Challenge.

I am also participating in these challenges:
Popsugar 2019
Around the Year in 52 books 2019
Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge 2019
Reading Women 2019
2019 Back to the Classics
2019 Cloak & Dagger

I was born and raised and still reside in the midwestern United States.

I enjoy reading just about everything EXCEPT horror! Can't handle being scared! Count me out if it has blood, guts, and gore! :( Other than that I love fiction, mysteries, fantasy/science fiction, nonfiction. Participating in these challenges has forced me to read books I would never otherwise select (litRPG, manga, etc.). And that is my purpose!

Someone on the Popsugar thread mentioned this challenge, so I googled it. I love nonfiction but find I must force myself to include these books rather than concentrating on only fiction. Plus much of the nonfiction I read is memoir/autobiography/biography, which is okay, but I want to expand my nonfiction horizons!

I hope to fulfill all 20 nonfiction prompts this year. We shall see...

Thank you to the moderators who make this happen!

Lynn

The book that has hit me the hardest this year is When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. In my opinion, every "white" person in this country should read this book. Unbelievable how many must live as "prey" in the US. I don't believe many of us in this forum can truly understand what it is like... I appreciate those insights.

I'll stop there, because when I look at the books I've read this year, there are 10 I would like to list... ;)

Oh, and I neglected to mention that I am also participating in several Bookworm Bitches challenges this year. I am enjoying immersing myself in these challenges since (1) I adore making lists of books and (2) I love to meet and speak with other readers!

I have always resisted doing so since I still work full time and for the past 18 months I have been exercising 12+ hours per week (each of the 5 nights afterwork for 2-2 1/2 hours) since bilateral knee joint replacement in 2017. But I decided if I don't complete them all that's okay. I will feel successful even if I'm only able to partially complete some of them. It has already been so much fun!

Kirsty | 5 comments Hi Everyone. I'm Kirsty from Scotland

I have only just joined the website. I love to read but unfortunately don't read as much as I should. I work full time in Accounting.

My favourite genres are Horror, Thriller and Paranormal. My favourite author is James Herbert.

I would love to take part in challenges to encourage me to read more. Looking forward to getting to know you all and take part in as much reading as possible.

Thanks :)

message 843: by Alyshea (new)

Alyshea | 11 comments Hello everyone! My name is Alyshea and I am from Canada. I don't really pick books based off of genre - I am a bookstore wanderer and will pick up and read about based on covers and titles. Might be silly, but it allows me to try new things out. If I had to pick what I read most I would say I have a soft spot for WWII Fiction and everything Joan Didion.

I was looking for a community of sorts similar to an old fashioned book club but didn't require me to go sit with strangers or acquaintances once a week and read at their pace. I'm too introverted and like being able to move at my own pace. I found this group after a quick Google search and am excited and nervous to get started.

Since the year is almost halfway through, I am aiming to read a book a week for the rest of the year. That may be a bit ambitious for me with my work but I am committed to trying it out!

Thank you for having me and thank you for your patience while I figure this whole thing out :) Happy reading!

message 845: by Kobi (new)

Kobi Solomon Hello Everyone!

I'm Kobi from Australia.

I currently live in a very small town where if you don't play sport you don't have a social life. So I am turning to books and traveling as sport is not my strong suit.

I'm participating in the Popsugar Reading Challenge 2019 I found on Pinterest.

So far I have read 12 of 50 books which includes the additions on the challenge.

I recently finished Stephen Kings IT, which was the biggest book I have ever read.

The list of my read POPSUGAR books are on my 2019 Reading Challenge page.

Is it just me or is it hard to find like minded people who enjoy reading in the recent years? Although this is a small town and there is a library but I am yet to find someone else who likes to read. I'd like to start a reading club or book club.. maybe next year.

Here's to the readers, the library card holders, the 'book was better club', the re-readers, the Belle's and the curious minds!

Rich Stoehr (glassisland) | 8 comments Hi Kobi! Welcome to the group!

Kobi wrote: "Is it just me or is it hard to find like minded people who enjoy reading in the recent years?"

I think it depends on where you are - I see people reading all the time, on the ferry and on the bus every day. I think you'll see there's plenty of interest in books and reading around here... ;)

message 847: by Cat (new)

Cat Calnan Hey everyone. I'm Cat. From Cork, Ireland. I'm doing the Popsugar Reading Challenge for the second year, but I want to finish it this time though.....
So far, I've read 15/16 books, I'm not much of a counter. I checked earlier and thought it was 15, but it's actually 16 I think..... It could be 14 tomorrow, knowing me!
So yeah, I'm one of those people who looks at the prompt and takes ages to decide what I want to read for it. But it's better to find a book you think you'll enjoy, rather than settling on the first one that suits, right?
I'm hoping the group will help me work out some of the tougher prompts because some of the books on other peoples' lists sound cool and I really want to read some of them!
Thanks for letting me join and I know this is going to be fun !

message 848: by Victoria Zoe (new)

Victoria Zoe Callus (vzreads) | 1 comments Hello everyone! Very excited to have joined this group. I'm Victoria, I'm from Malta (in the Mediterranean) but live in the UK where I'm finishing off a research-based critical-creative MA and starting PhD research. I'm particularly interested in contemporary experimental literature, particularly looking into how it relates to postmodernism.

I'm currently reading work which might be classed 'post-postmodern' or 'metamodern' - is anyone else interested similar literature? Very open to further discussion about this, and would love to hear ideas or suggestions.

My aim is to read at least 100 books this year (excluding theory).
Currently reading: Franzen - The Corrections
Just finished: Hustvedt - The Summer Without Men
Has anyone read these? I've reviewed Hustvedt on my page and would love to hear anyone else's thoughts.

Best wishes,
V

Carol-ann Gibson (carolanns_books) | 46 comments Hey all, I'm Carolann. I am from Glasgow, Scotland. I like most genres of books but my favourite is probably personal development, romance and sci-fi fantasy.
I think my all time favourite books I've read have been the handmaid's tale and the help they were both books I literally could not put down!
I joined this group as I'm trying to get myself back into reading more I fell into the trap of being sucked into my phone and not doing anything else. I am looking for good recommendations for books and always wanted to be part of a group who talked about books!
I have set myself a challenge of reading 20 books this year So far I've read 10! P.s already downloaded June's book so I'm ready ;)

message 850: by Gobbledegeek (new)

Gobbledegeek Hello guys! I'm Keke. I am from China. Like most students in China, I've learned English from a very early age, but only since last year, my English ability finally allowed me to read English literature in its original language. And I'm kind of addicted to it. My favorite genre is 20th century's fictional classics.
I found this website not long ago. It's so nerdy, so it works perfectly for me. I especially enjoy reading those funny 1-star reviews.
My goal this year is to read more English-written works and find my next favorite author.
