Sara (sarabelle) | 457 comments Hi everyone! I’m Sara and I’m currently living in Southern California. I love reading all kinds of books but recently I’ve been very much into Russian classics, surprisingly. Although I am taking a bit of a break with lighter reads.

I found the group because I’m trying to get back into reading a lot more (since school/work/internship/etc. have taken so much of my time, I haven’t gotten to doing as much reading as I’d like and once used to) and thought it would be nice to have challenges to help inspire me to read more. As someone who always enjoys a challenge, this group seemed like the perfect fit, and there were so many wonderful people I just had to join! Currently, my goal is to read at least 24 books this year which may not seem like a lot (and it isn’t!) but I’m trying not to set too high a goal that I get discouraged. Hopefully that number will end up being much bigger once I get into the swing of things.

I have set an “Alphabet Challenge” list (bookshelf A-Z) that I intend to finish this year so I suppose my goal is already more than 24, and having set the challenge for myself has really helped. It’s been a great way to get some of the books out of my “To Read” list and actually read them.

Whew, that got long!

Anyways, more info about me/what things I enjoy can be found on my about page if interested and I’m looking forward to reading with you all!

xx Sara

Rich Stoehr (glassisland) | 8 comments HI everyone - I saw that some of you were reading 'Stardust,' one of my old favorites, and I joined up yesterday.

My tastes run pretty wide - mostly fiction, but some non-fiction sprinkled in as it strikes my fancy. I'm currently on a book about Einstein's illegitimate daughter, whose existence wasn't even known until relatively recently - a bit of research for a short story I might write.

I am a writer too, currently working in marketing for a promotional apparel company whose clothes you've probably worn at some point. My true love is writing fiction, but I'm happy living in a place I truly love and getting to do something I enjoy.

Looking forward to playing along on the reading challenge with you all!

Michele Lynn (whrobin) | 24 comments Hi my name is Michele I'm from Texas and I read a variety of genre, there are only a couple that are just not my taste. I have a weird system for deciding what my next book to read will be so I very rarely know what my next book will be until I pick it. (If I could only speed read). Last year I didn't get as much time to read as I would have liked and hope it will be better this year. I've also been rereading books in order to leave a proper review for them. I have my favorites but the list it much to long to mention. Hopefully I'll be able to share books and authors I've enjoyed with everyone here.

Eliza May Hello, I'm from Australia and I like to read non-fiction. Recently I branched out to fiction and I really love it too.

After filling out my reading goals on my profile, I was looking for something else to do on here and found this group.

My reading goal is to read more than five books. For the past two years, it seems like five is the number I always arrive to when the year ends. Last year the goal was too high and I was nowhere near it so, if I just read more than I did last year, I think I will be happy. :)

anthea (saph95) Hi all,

My name is Anthea. I'm from London, UK and I'm currently at work... bored so decided to do some group browsing and stumbled across this. I'm a little late to the party, but hey ho.

I had a goal of 52 books. 52 in 52 weeks seemed doable but I have a teeny tiny feeling I'll be surpassing that so might just up it in increments. I don't usually set a defined goal for myself, but I like to try and read as much as I can. Or at least more than last year!

I'm really into Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Thrillers & any Contemporary that's deep, dark and will make me cry like a baby. Strictly no romance. I cannot deal with romance books as of recently.

I've been through a pretty shitty time recently so really just looking for people to talk to & connect with about BOOKS :)

Nana | 1 comments Hello, You can call me Nana. It`s my nickname, made by myself. I am quite not confident of myself. Thank you for your understanding.

- Where are you from?
I am from Indonesia, the South region of Central Java Province.

- What kinds of books do you like to read?
I like to read romance book with sad ending before.Nothing wrong with it,right?
But this year I met someone who makes me feel challenged with the wide knowledges he has. I want to be as smart as him.
I always prefer actual book than the virtual because I can`t concentrate while reading online.

- How did you find our group?
Randomly searching on Google

- What's your reading goal?
This year, I set my goal to read nonfiction books.
Starting with Sapiens.

Enlightened me,please.

Julia (nojiri23) | 150 comments Hi, all!
I'm (most recently) from New York. I have a wide range of "favorite" genres, usually based on what I'm in the mood to read or what would be most useful for work. For example, I became a YA librarian last fall and have been reading quite a YA lately. I also love fantasy (particularly world building such as Dune, Malazan Bk of the Fallen, Lefthand of Darkness, etc.), mystery, well-written romance, and thought-provoking fiction and nonfiction.

I found this group when I looked at the tab for Community.

I made my reading goal about 14 books (because I actually wasn't reading much the last few years), but apparently I was reading obsessively in January and February and reached 10 already. Maybe I should raise the stakes?

Oh, and I often "read" audiobooks. Right now I am listening to The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, and read by the incomparable Jim Dale.

Vivek Pradhan (vivek_pradhan) | 1 comments Hi everyone,

I'm Vivek from India. I'm mostly into travel, self-help, psychology, biography, adventure, historical fiction and mystery genres but I also like to experiment with other genres - just it should connect well with me.
Talking about my goal. I would like to complete reading 45 books in 2019, so wish me luck.

Happy reading!

I just came out of the longest reader block ever and I'm so excited to get back at reading.
My reading goal for 2019 is 50 books (hopefully more!)

Fair warning this might get long. Well let's see if I can even explain may weirdness and method. Basically long before I ever found any of the challenges on Goodreads or anywhere else for that matter. Actually even before I found Goodreads, it started back when I got my first Kindle, one of the keyboard types. I went nuts finding every free book I could and before I knew it I had 100's and then 1000's of books not to mention the hard copies I already had sitting at home. I figured I needed to get some kind of system to pick a book. I figured out I could sort my books in different ways so I started a list:

Books bought (oldest to newest)
Books bought (newest to oldest)
Alphabetically by title (symbols to z)
Alphabetically by author (symbols to z)
Alphabetically by title (z to symbols)
Alphabetically by title (z to symbols)
Kindle First books
A hard copy I already owned

But I didn't want to just stick with the freebies so added to the list:

Amazon series (symbols to z) (sorting)
Top 100 by genre to sub-genre
Book made into a movie (alphabetically) Wikipedia helped here
Kindle daily deals
Kindle monthly deals
Book from a series I had already started
A classic
Amazon customer reviews (1 star to 5 star)
Amazon charts most read (week)(year)
Amazon charts most sold (week)(year)

Once I found Goodreads I added more:

Choice awards by year
Best Book by year
Average rating
Random

When I found the challenges I started looking at all the sites that do book awards and realized there was a way to use it as a challenge. Since they list all their previous winners, finalist, semifinalist, long-list, short-list and honorable mentioned (depending on the award) by genre and year this could be broken down in parts:

Year
Genre
Winner
Finalist
and so on depending on that award

I would just see what was next on my list and find the book to read. Between the free books and this process I've found lots of new authors and started several new series. I've been lucky to only have found one book I just hated. You can see by the length of this post why I didn't post it in my "hello I am...," and I didn't post everything.

For hard copies I already have they are shelved so I just take the next in line.

I've been on this group for awhile but I was MIA. I am back now and I hope to ready 19 books for 2019. I like to read just about anything but my current fav genres are Historic Fiction, Science and Fiction.

Thanks for having me here!

Jasmine | 1 comments Hi! My name is Jasmine & I am from India. I live in Stockholm currently & work as a food technologist. I have always been an avid reader since my childhood but like many others feel that I don't get the time to read. I love reading fast paced thrillers when I am travelling but more feel good books or books bringing insight into another cultural when I am at home. I found this group as I logged into goodreads today. I would be happy to read somewhere between 15-20 books this year :)

message 670: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (lovesfriedchicken) | 2 comments My name is Carolyn and I LOVE reading fiction and thrillers most! My challenge will be 40 books this year.

message 671: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Narey (Bookreview- aholic) Hi, Im sophie I dont think I have introduced myself on here yet, I am sophie from england and I am a total reading addict! I set my target for this year pretty low as I am also working and studying so have less time. I love most genres, currently in a bit of a thriller kick but will give any genre a try. If anyone has an recommendations for thriller books, series or authors I would love to know :) hope you are all having a great day and I am looking forward to getting to know you all

message 672: by Mercedes (new)

Mercedes (mercirose) Hello! My name is Mercedes. I've loved to read ever since I was a little girl, even loved those silly accelerated reader tests LOL!

-I'm from Minnesota (more like Minnesnowta)
-My favorite genre of books is usually paranormal, fantasy, and romance (but I'm trying to reach out and try other genres).
- I found this group because the site had a little list of tips, like joining a group for things like book challenges, and I just really loved the idea!
- My reading goal is to just read more in general. I know that's super vague, but I don't know what number to set just yet. I got through three of the Outlander books last year, so I want to say I can read a good deal more than I thought, but I'm still learning how to balance my time. For now maybe I should say 5 at the least, since I can always change it later.

Thank you Mods for putting this group together, and good luck to everyone and their reading goals of 2019!

Priyanshi | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Priyanshi.

I am from India, and will join my postgraduate course soon.
I am a novice reader.
I use to love reading but for the past year I have lost motivation to read?
I joined this group to get motivated to start reading again.
I like simple (?) books. As in with not too much drama and with good character development.
My goal is to read atleast 10 books in my holidays :)

Rebecca | 2 comments Hi! My name is Rebecca, and I'm from the US. I've been an avid reader my whole life, but have just joined goodreads. I tend to get stuck in a reading rut when deciding what to read next. I like any and all genres. I'm looking forward to book recommendations, and accomplishing my reading goal of 50 books this year!

message 677: by Ice (new)

Ice M. (iceandspines) | 73 comments Hi there. I'm Ice. You can call me Ice. I am a complete newbie to goodreads. I just signed up last week mainly because I wanted to get more into reading as I have been on a hiatus for so long now and my book hoarding guilt is starting to get to me. I wanted to find a good place to put in my book reviews to hopefully make me more responsible and to be able to keep track of my progress. This year, I am targeting to read a total of 10 books. It might be too few for some, but I think considering that I’m just getting back into reading again, I wanted to set a goal that’s doable. I’m into all sorts of books, both fiction and non-fiction. A few years back, I used to only read fiction, mainly those in the mystery/thriller genre. But as I met more people, I started venturing into non-fiction books as well. I hope to be able to commit to my 2019 reading challenge and gain some valuable insights by joining this group.

message 678: by Darlene (new)

Darlene Grant | 4 comments Hello fellow book lovers.

I am Darlene and I am from Maine. I love to read thrillers and horror books, but force myself to read other genres. There isn't a genre I don't like or wouldn't read. Found this group while exploring groups that sounded interesting to join. I love a good challenge, so this is right up my ally. I plan to read 30 books this year. I only read 24 of 30 last year, so pushing myself to get to 30.

message 679: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Rousseau | 9 comments Hi everyone, I'm a little late joining the group for 2019 but here goes my introduction ; )

I am from Ontario, Canada. I mostly read fiction but also try to get in a few non-fiction books every year (generally memoirs or business related books but now parenting...more on that later). My fiction choices are a mix but I love a good historical fiction and sometimes an easy chick-lit or YA as a "palate cleanser" between more serious books.

I actually found the group by browsing through lists and I found the lists for the group first. I have never joined a GR group so I'm a total newbe : )

I usually read between 50 and 60 books per year but this year I am a new mom so I have reduced my challenge to 30 books. My little one was born just before Christmas and I am on maternity leave so I have a bit of time to read but not as much as before that's for sure!

Take care!

message 680: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 549 comments Hi,
I've been on Goodreads for a couple of years, but I just found you.
A little bit about me:

Born in Baghdad, raised in England, and have lived in the U.S. for 40+ years. I'm a retired academic. Was a professor of English for about 18 years, then a dean, then the VP for Academic Services. I retired in 2013.

I have published five books--2 non-fiction (one of which has been used as a text for Women in Religions classes). Since my retirement, I have published three novels. All my books focus on women in mythology.

I have eclectic taste in reading. I love to read the classics, books on mythology (especially the mythology of Ancient Greece and Mesopotamia), re-telling of myths, feminism, and contemporary novels--especially novels by Asians and Africans.

I have set a goal to read 60 books this year, 40 of them by women authors. I've already read 21 books. I'll post the books and reviews in the challenge thread.

I look forward to seeing what other folks recommend because I'm always on the lookout for something new to read.

Thanks and all best.

I've been reading books ever since I was a child and it's been one of my constant loves and hobbies over the years. I enjoy reading almost all genres of books but recently I've been very into Philosophy and Historical reads over everything else. I like to think that our favorite genres are like the moon, they come and go like the phases of the moon cycle. I haven't been able to read as much as I would like this past year but I'd like to read around 25-30 books this year. I wish everyone good luck with their goals!
