I want to be sure if only one book is to be read for this task to earn 250 points?

Need help with task no. 14 - Read a book where someone is described as having a Type A Personality.

Do not understand this task. Any book suggestions for this task?

Thanks.

HI Viji,
Yes, you only need to read one book for the February bonus!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12853 comments I was wondering, with these last couple of days left in Jan... If we completed our January books, can we start reading the February ones already, or do we have to wait until the 1st?
I'm in book limbo at the moment, as I didn't think we could read them beforehand, but I've seen others list some as "reading now", so wondered if we could?

Lexi & Brooklyn are correct. They just need to be started after the challenge began (in Dec) and the read date is the month they count for

"Type A personality" is a psychological theory that has entered into popular culture. You may find it mentioned in crime/thriller type books as the criminal may be described this way. The easiest way to find phrases is if you have an e-reader. If not, perhaps some other players can share their ideas if anyone is reading for this task

Am also having a hard time finding one for this - does it have to specifically state that they have a "Type A Personality", or will listing the attributes/describing the character as having those traits work?

I've had a look on my kindle and it is difficult as I have an old kindle that won't allow a search on specific sentences (so when I put in personality it also picks up any instances of "person"... too smart for it's own good!).
So because I can't give examples, I am happy for the task to not have to be the specific wording, but explain someone with tendencies as per wikipedia.
Which is "competitive, highly organized, ambitious, impatient, highly aware of time management and/or aggressive"

Oh that's a huge help! I was having so much trouble with that one, lol.

Don't suppose anyone has any ideas about the not cutting hair or lunar new year books? (fiction ideally. already have too many non-fiction lined up for next month, lol)

What I do is wait until the month starts if I am stuck and then look at other people's spreadsheets.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Moderators of NBRC wrote: "Which is "competitive, highly organized, ambitious, impatient, highly aware of time management and/or aggressive"

I am interpreting that to mean that the character has to be described with *several* of those qualities, so that we can truly infer that they are a “Type A”. Otherwise, I can easily imagine people finding the word “impatient” as a descriptor, for example, and trying to use just that. ;D

I did actually, through the magic of google, find a KU book in which someone is described as having an “A- Type personality” but it’s a book I do not own (I do not have KU, just the one loan per month via Prime) and am not especially interested in. So, depending on how things go, I may use the modified rules too...

message 467: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments I have found some from my library that are cozy mysteries that use type-A.

message 468: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12853 comments I think finding a true type A personality should be easy enough that people shouldn't need to cut corners (yeah, I know... lol).

I picked The Devil Wears Prada, as all but about 2 characters are 100% type A, lol.

I did try googling for this one, but I'm obviously using the wrong words, because all that was popping up for me was personality test books and such, and they are soooooo expensive! lol. I don't have KU either, and if at all possible greatly prefer something I can hold in my hands!

message 469: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) What books are you finding?

message 470: by Lexi (last edited Jan 30, 2019 02:27PM) (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments For instance, A Match Made In Montana has the sentence "contrast to Brice's conservative, rigid type A personality."

I put words with it and search in google books that I think would be used in a sentence. "she has a type a personality" or contrast + "type a." It took over an hour and the first few pages are all personality books.

My technique is similar. I took the books I found via Google that were not personality tests and such, and checked the contents in Amazon preview and/or Google Books. One cannot always see full text with those sources, but apart from some stuff I wasn’t at all interested in, did verify for 2 books:
Ocean of Fear (available via KU) and Dear Whistleblower (print only, may be hard to find without purchasing).
I would be curious to know what other people have found. I don’t really read cozy mysteries but I’m open to the possibility.

I am paranoid now...
Do you mean as a significant plot point? I was planning to use a vampire book in which at least one vampire is beheaded as part of a hunt or fight. It happens “on screen” so to speak, but presumably it isn’t a major plot point. Is this allowed?

It doesn't need to be a significant plot point - just happen in the book. Beheading a vampire is fine

I was all excited at finding a graphic novel that had a 25k+ page count on AR bookfind, but am now not sure I can use it.

Is the 25k+ exemption for childrens & plays only, or does it apply to all on the list, if there's a verified page count?

PS: now heading over to UNO to check there too....

ETA: phew UNO is OK, just fingers crossed for Upside Down now :)

message 486: by Alysa (last edited Feb 06, 2019 10:29AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments In the Upside Down rules it seems pretty clear that the 25k verified word count (you meant word, not page, yes?) is only applicable to childrens & plays.
But who knows, maybe the mods will feel generous... ;D

You're right Alysa. We were being stricter with this one

====

(from the rules)

Unless otherwise specified in the task, (some lower point tasks will allow this) the following books can NOT be used:
* Comic / Graphic / Magna
* Cookbooks
* Textbooks
* Travel Guides
* Poetry
* Poems
* Childrens / Middle Grade novels and plays/screenplays can only be used where you can verify the word count through AR BookFind as 25,001 words or more. If you can't verify it with that site, you can check if audible has the unabridged version as more than 3 hours. If you can't verify either, then you can't use it (unless the specific task says you can)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Two questions re the “character won't cut their hair” task —

1) Character won’t or can’t cut their hair for religious/cultural reasons, but ultimately relents, is forced to do it, or has their hair forcibly cut by someone else. Do any of those scenarios work?

2) I have been assuming a marked difference between “won't cut their hair” VS “has never cut their hair” but I have seen at least one other player using the latter. Is that allowed?

For 1. yes.
For 2. I guess it is down to the context. The derivative of the goal is around lunar new year (no cutting of hair). It should be that someone has made a decision to not cut their hair, rather than just not worried about it and let it grow

message 497: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Karen ⊰✿ wrote: "For 2. I guess it is down to the context. "

I haven’t read the book the person used, but it’s a Rapunzel retelling. In most versions it isn’t that Rapunzel won’t cut her hair or has any real say in the matter. Perhaps in this version she “won’t” but in the spreadsheet it only gives reason as “has never”.

message 498: by Rina (last edited Feb 14, 2019 10:49AM) (new)

Rina | 722 comments If you mean Rotten Rapunzel, then it is completely Rapunzel's decision not to cut her hair:

"I hate your hair." She has said it for years. "One of these days I'm going to cut it off while you're sleeping!" She has said that for years too.
I am not worried. I never let her touch my hair as a child. I liked having it long. And something about the sound of scissors would freak me out. I threw crazy tantrums, loud and violent, to keep her from cutting my hair. It worked every time.
And if she couldn't control me then, she certainly can't do it now." , chapter 3.

Follow-up question:
For the religious/cultural reason, does it have to be explicitly stated or discussed in the book, or can it be implicit? For example: “There is a Sikh character. Sikhs do not cut their hair. Ergo, the book counts.”
I would think it does NOT count unless it is explicit, but can you confirm?
