The only story I know of where a dog is more than they seem is Diana Wynne Jones's Dogsbody but that dog is the incarnation of a star, IIRC.

The dog cannot talk as a human can, but through uncanny intelligence lead the main character to where they need to go? I cannot remember if the dog is a reincarnation or if it just channels the ancient Egyptian God/Pharaoh.

Court, around what year did you read this book? This will help narrow down the search.

How did the boy/girl find or adopt the dog?

I read it around the mid to late 1990s. And I think the dog was found, and the parents let the kid keep the dog.
