Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #10 (bike ride) - Girl at War by Sara Novic. I love reading a book that is well-written and from which I can learn. This book had both of those things. I'm ashamed to say I know very little about the Yugoslavian civil war, and this book has inspired me to learn more. My only criticism was that the book ended abruptly - I feel like it was missing an epilogue or final section. Definitely worth reading! 4 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #11 (industrial) - Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. I enjoyed this book's premise. The writing was good, and it had just the right amount of science for me. I'm definitely continuing with the series. However, the portrayals of women were skewed into parody (either the madonna or the whore or the shrew, etc). A sign of the times in which this book was written. That was my main criticism of the book, but it's still worth reading. 4 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #5 (graphic novel) - Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley. My first graphic novel, and I loved the subject matter! it was an incredibly different reading experience with pictures and words vs. words alone. And the food depictions were perfect and mouth-watering! I cannot wait to try her chocolate chip cookie recipe! Definitely worth reading! 4 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed #4 (train ride) - Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. This book was so well done! The descriptions carried me to the shores of Korea and Japan, and I swear I could smell the kimchi and udon noodles. The characters were complex and flawed. My only slight criticism was that I felt the author kept separated from the characters and their circumstances, as if I was reading through a lens rather than in the characters' minds. Brilliantly conceptualized! Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars
