Yes, sounds very good!

Can I use this book for the Charles Darwin task? It seems to fit the task, but I cant find it on Goodreads!

It is published electronically by Project Gutenberg Australia in 2018

I searched under author, Title, and Isbn with no luck finding it on Goodreads. How do you handle this situation?

Yes, you can use it for this task. I have created an edition here:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

(Interestingly, I have an Australian author friend who is currently traveling by boat anti-clockwise around Australia.)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5290 comments How about these two books? Both are about Jesuit missionaries traveling to and around Canada and their efforts at religious conversion.

The Orenda
Fathers and Crows

These aren't what the task is about, which is more adventure that involves travel. In these, the priests happen to travel, but they aren't really going on an adventure.

Valerie Brown | 3285 comments Could you please confirm if this is suitable for the task: The Last Crossing I thought it was when I picked it for this task, but now I'm second guessing myself.

This is borderline, but we'll take it. (I have a Canadian backgammon friend who highly recommends Vanderhaeghe. I have read this one, and will get to his more well known The Englishman's Boy eventually.)

Ok good, thanks! I picked this up at the last library book sale, and this seemed to be the task to move one of my real life TBR books off the floor.... :)

message 60: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2286 comments Would Hippie by Paulo Coelho fit this task? The blurb says that the novel is loosely based on the author's recollections of the 1960s. The protaganist travels through Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, then later, Amsterdam and even Central Asia.

Yes, that works.

message 62: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) What about time travel where the protagonist engages and fights dinosaurs?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rebekah wrote: "What about time travel where the protagonist engages and fights dinosaurs?"

No, time travel does not fit this task.

message 64: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Ok

Elizabeth (Alaska) Ed wrote: "A Tramp Abroad by Mark Twain?"

Yes, that will work. (You might note the MPE is likely an abridged edition, so no jumbo points)

message 67: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 2768 comments I'm reading Anathem which is full of philosophical discussion but I'm now halfway through and the main character was just caught in an avalanche after the people smugglers stranded him when he was trying to get from one side of the world to the other via the north pole. Does this sound like a travel adventure?

Yes. I note the latter part of the GR descriptions says he sets out on an extraordinary odyssey that will carry him to the most dangerous, inhospitable corners of the planet...

Anika | 2806 comments Would Every Heart a Doorway work for this? It looks like characters go to different worlds by going through different doors and reading other group members' reviews it seems like it might...

Rosemary | 4303 comments Does Contact fit here? They don't set off through the black holes in their space travel machine until probably 75% of the way through the book, but most of the book is preparation for it.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rosemary wrote: "Does Contact fit here? They don't set off through the black holes in their space travel machine until probably 75% of the way through the book, but most of the book is preparation for it."

It doesn't sound as if there is enough travel adventure in this one to fit.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Anika wrote: "Would Every Heart a Doorway work for this? It looks like characters go to different worlds by going through different doors and reading other group members' reviews it seems like it..."

Going through doorways is not enough travel enough for this task.

That makes total sense—thank you :-)

yes

message 77: by Megan (new)

Megan (gentlyread) | 358 comments I thought I remembered Washington Black being discussed in regard to this task, but I can't find it now. "Adventure" and "travel" are in its shelvings, as well as mentioned in a lot of reviews. Does it sound like it works for this task?

Bea Would The Girl Who Came Home work for this task? It is the story of an Irish lass who sailed to America by the SS Titanic with a group of her friends.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Bea wrote: "Would The Girl Who Came Home work for this task? It is the story of an Irish lass who came to America by the SS Titanic."

No, I'm sorry. It does have enough shelvings for 20.5 though. (As does the Amor Towles you just posted.)

message 82: by Bea (new)

Bea I'm thinking The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn would work for this task.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Bea wrote: "I'm thinking The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn would work for this task."

Yes, there's probably enough travel for it to work.

Well, so far he has rafted down the Mississippi, been involved in cons, escaped from some bad situations, and not ended up where he thought he would due to traveling in the dark on a large river. Feels like a grand adventure to me. Thanks.

Bea Would The Martian count as a grand adventure?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Bea wrote: "Would The Martian count as a grand adventure?"

Doesn't the book find him already on Mars, that the travel to that planet is not part of the story?

message 87: by Bea (last edited Feb 20, 2019 10:29PM) (new)

Bea Hmmm. Yes, but he uses the Rover to explore to find the radioactive core and then travels 3000 km across Mars to reach the rocket he will use to leave the planet. This kind of trip required supplies and life support be taken along and so he had to rig the rover to provide the necessary life support (water, oxygen, electricity, food), create a trailer to carry his equipment and supplies, and figure out how to survive. The trip itself took about a month. He had to survive a dust storm, navigate around craters, and set his course by the stars to find his way.

message 88: by Bea (new)

Bea I have posted The Martian but did not take combo points for Charles Darwin since there was no reconsideration of my further comments. If it is approved, I would appreciate the additional points. But, otherwise, it does not matter as I have already claimed a book for this task.
