The bit about stopping the heart through meditation and healing animals is in Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce. Daine, the main character, mostly works with animals, though, so the "fixing things" part doesn't fit really. Any chance you are mixing up two books?

I must have conflated two different stories I read around the same time.
