I have portal fiction on my rejects list and will use In an Absent Dream.
Haha you definitely aren't messing up my "system". Maybe just edit your first post to show which polls this one came from? So that people can easily refer back to those threads.

I originally had this one on my rejects list, but ended up swapping it out because I was having trouble finding books I liked. Exit West is a really popular one (I liked it ok, but it wasn't my favorite).

I was thinking the same thing! I thought this prompt would be really easy to fulfill, since there must be tons of these kinds of books, but it's hard to find them in a search.
Does anyone know if Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series would work?

A Darker Shade of Magic
The Invisible Library
Spinning Silver
I Hate Fairyland, Vol. 1: Madly Ever After
Down Among the Sticks and Bones
Beneath the Sugar Sky
The Cruel Prince
The Subtle Knife
Dragon's Green
Down Station
The Long Earth
The Door That Led to Where
An Artificial Night

I think later in the series?? I really want to reread these this year because I didn't get a chance to finish the last book or start on the follow up series and I loved them. But my memory is spotty :/
Its been a while.

Some other books I've read recently that would qualify are Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, and the Thomas Covenant series by Stephen R. Donaldson.
I intend to use one of Tad Williams' Otherland books, though this might be a bit of a stretch. In these books, characters enter a virtual reality gaming world.
I think the third book in the Mortal Instruments series would count as well. (I only read through #4 then quit because I hated it... should have stuck to the trilogy, imo).

Strangely enough, I'm having a bit of trouble with this one but that is probably because I have a couple of varieties of the "portal fiction" type prompts on my current rejects list. I may end up dropping or switching it a bit for the sake of variety.
I think a lot of fantasy series would work for this. Definitely the Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter would work, I'm also thinking of Strange the Dreamer, but I can't tell whether the character actually goes to another world. Can anyone confirm?
