Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3282 comments Emily -- I hope I'm not messing with your system by posting this.

Strangely enough, I'm having a bit of trouble with this one but that is probably because I have a couple of varieties of the "portal fiction" type prompts on my current rejects list. I may end up dropping or switching it a bit for the sake of variety.

I think a lot of fantasy series would work for this. Definitely the Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter would work, I'm also thinking of Strange the Dreamer, but I can't tell whether the character actually goes to another world. Can anyone confirm?

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I'm going to use spoiler tags to talk about Strange the Dreamer because it concerns the second book, but I'll still try and be vague.

(view spoiler)

I have portal fiction on my rejects list and will use In an Absent Dream.

Haha you definitely aren't messing up my "system". Maybe just edit your first post to show which polls this one came from? So that people can easily refer back to those threads.

Poll #8 - Close Call
Poll #9 - Polarizing

I originally had this one on my rejects list, but ended up swapping it out because I was having trouble finding books I liked. Exit West is a really popular one (I liked it ok, but it wasn't my favorite).

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments This prompt (and the similarly worded "portal fiction") seem to be ridiculously difficult to research and find qualifying books. There have to be a bazillion sff books that are about entering other worlds/going through portals but I just could never seem to find the right words to convince google to show me lists of those types of books. I'm using a time travel book for this prompt (although I haven't totally decided which one yet) because that seems like an obvious fit.

I was thinking the same thing! I thought this prompt would be really easy to fulfill, since there must be tons of these kinds of books, but it's hard to find them in a search.

Does anyone know if Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series would work?

I think later in the series?? I really want to reread these this year because I didn't get a chance to finish the last book or start on the follow up series and I loved them. But my memory is spotty :/
Its been a while.

T. Hampton | 104 comments There is one of the Mortal Instruments books, the last one maybe, where they enter the realm of hell. I would think that would qualify.

Some other books I've read recently that would qualify are Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, and the Thomas Covenant series by Stephen R. Donaldson.

I intend to use one of Tad Williams' Otherland books, though this might be a bit of a stretch. In these books, characters enter a virtual reality gaming world.

I think the third book in the Mortal Instruments series would count as well. (I only read through #4 then quit because I hated it... should have stuck to the trilogy, imo).

Brooke | 242 comments Most of the books in The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher would work. The stories all take place in Chicago, but there is another world (The Nevernever) where all the fae live, and the main character travels there via magical portal.

Conny | 648 comments A modern(ish) classic for this prompt would be The Neverending Story, fitting it to a T :)
