Social Media can be a hobby."

That's a hilarious choice - never would have thought of it. I loved the book.

Samantha (bookstasamm) | 182 comments Books about books since we all have reading as a hobby:

Wild by Cheryl Strayed

message 204: by Alison (new)

Alison (alisonmeagan) | 24 comments I think I might check out "Songbook" by Nick Hornby, about his favorite songs and his love of music. I think his Fever Pitch could also fit in this category as well.

message 205: by Nyssa (last edited Dec 28, 2018 05:52AM) (new)

Nyssa | 11 comments For books about music, check the discussion for prompt #3. Other books from my to be read list that could fit this prompt:
Music: The Only Pirate at the Party.

Baking: The City Baker's Guide to Country Living

Travel: Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure

Gardening: a bit of a stretch, but Leota's Garden
The Tea Gardens

Perfume: The Perfumer's Secret

I will probably read a non-fiction book about plants.

Im crying over here... Got stuck on FaceBook and Instagram last night for 2 hours reading comments about the craziness over here in CT at the malls, and looking at pretty bookstagram pictures...so yea I guess social media can be a hobby ...or a rabbit hole 😂😩

message 207: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Really stuck with this prompt my hobbies are reading and watching films. Presuambly this prompt means reading something on those?

Clever choice for sure and I'm just glad the hobby mentioned is social media and not stalking! ;)

Rachelnyc | 186 comments Thomas wrote: "Really stuck with this prompt my hobbies are reading and watching films. Presuambly this prompt means reading something on those?"

The prompt doesn't specifically say it has to be YOUR hobby so any book relating to a hobby would work.

Misha (musingmisha) | 9 comments Emily wrote: "Debbie Macomber has a lot of books about knitting, but I think my pick is going to be The Garden of Small Beginnings about gardening."

I have three books about knitting by Debbie Macomber (she has a lot!). I haven't read any of her books, tho. I hope it's a good read.

Denise wrote: "I'm a knitter (and I also crochet), so I'm choosing this one from my list:

A Stash of One's Own: Knitters on Loving, Living with, and Letting go of Yarn"

Ooh, this looks interesting. Thanks!

Personally, I'd like to read Alanna Okun's The Curse of the Boyfriend Sweater: Essays on Crafting, I just couldn't get my hands on a copy. Hopefully, next year!

message 211: by Mary (new)

Mary Leach | 4 comments I am interested in learning about cults. Would reading a book about a cult fit this prompt?

message 212: by Gina (new)

Gina I’m too sleepy to scroll through all of these posts right now, so I’ll just share that I plan to read The Mummy Bloggers because blogging often starts as a hobby, right? I’m not a blogger, but I like to read them. 😉

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) | 896 comments Mary Leach wrote: "I am interested in learning about cults. Would reading a book about a cult fit this prompt?"

I probably wouldn't consider a cult a hobby, but maybe some aspect that's included could be thought of as a hobby? Like, if they live in a commune that grows their own food, you could count it as a gardening hobby?

message 214: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I've found a book called Bookworm which is a memoir of childhood reading may read that

Julie | 172 comments Kelly wrote: "I was having trouble with this category, but then I realized a coloring book is still a book! I LOVE coloring, I'll throw on some old episodes of Parks and Rec or 30 Rock and go for hours"

What a creative idea, I love it. Now I'm thinking I might just use your idea and go through Jenny Lawson's coloring book, You Are Here: An Owner's Manual for Dangerous Minds.

Here's a recommendation for your hockey hobby!
Fall To Grace by Kerry Casey My real life book club read this book in 2018 - we all loved it. It's one of those books that you find yourself still thinking about months after. Set in MN, the boys that are the main story, play hockey. From different parts of MN they both are the stars of their hockey team. They meet because both lose their fathers to accidents on the same day and we see how they both deal with this loss. This is the first book in a trilogy and appears to be self-published.

message 217: by Marah (last edited Jan 01, 2019 12:09AM) (new)

Marah (eyreo) I'm going to read Good Clean Fun by Nick Offerman, but I think any of his books would work for a hobby.

It's woodworking.

message 218: by Deb (new)

Deb Mallonee | 1 comments I love both cooking and history, so I think I am going to read "Their Last Suppers: Legends of History and Their Final Meals" by Andrew Caldwell for this prompt.

message 219: by Josie (new)

Josie Lacey | 82 comments As I'm trying to read mostly books I already own for this year's challenge, I might read The Collector by John Fowles for this prompt. I read it at college, but that was about 10 years ago and I've been meaning to re-read it. The main character likes collecting butterflies (and other beautiful things).

message 220: by Caitlin (new)

I don't think the prompt specifies that the book must be fiction, does it?

message 221: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine | 5 comments I love to play an online game called "Runescape" so I just googled "novels about adults who play video games". lol. I found one that's a young-adult novel called "Guy in Real Life". The description sounded funny so I'll read this one. I suspect it will be a quick read so I might also read one of the scrapbooking ones. Who know, it might inspire me to get back to scrapbooking. Or at least to doing something with all my photos!

message 222: by Diana (new)

Diana (candystripelegs) | 246 comments For those that like reading comics, Amazon has Marvel Comics: The Untold Story as a Kindle deal this month. It might be worth checking out.

Tiqua Lovett | 1 comments I found one the other day called How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren. I started reading it today, and I absolutely love it. It makes me think about what I read, why I read, and how I process what I read to benefit me and those around me the most!

I read Summer of Light a few years ago, and I remember photography playing prominently in it.

message 232: by Ashleyknuckles (new)

Ashleyknuckles | 1 comments I wonder if Rise by Cara Brookins would work. It’s about how she started over and built a house for herself and her kids on her own. One of my hobbies is woodworking and building furniture.

message 233: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Grier | 33 comments Shannen wrote: "Does anyone know of any good books about skateboarding or surfing?"

I came across this one when searching for a book for this prompt, but I haven't read it All Our Waves Are Water: Stumbling Toward Enlightenment and the Perfect Ride

Julie Duhamel | 1 comments Alison wrote: "Anyone think Like Water for Chocolate would work? I haven't read it, but it looks like it revolves a lot around cooking?"

Hello Alison,

It’s an amazing book, but she is cooking for her family, it’s not that much of a hobby, although she obviously enjoys it. Could be a book about a family :).

I read earlier on this forum that "Like Water for Chocolate" has some sort of superpower in it. I plan to read this book this year and find someplace for it to fall.

Katy M | 960 comments I've finally landed on a hobby (I think). I love to travel. I just don't very much because it's expensive. Anybody know any good books about travelling. Or maybe just hiking.

message 238: by Jen (new)

Lisette Woest-appeldoorn (lizsavage) | 12 comments I have lots of hobbies, but besides reading my favourite is football (soccer). I always joke "I am raised at the football fields", Played as well myself.
Lots of books about football around. From the actual game till books about the players.
For this prompt I choose the latter.
I read "Balotelli" by Frank Worral". I kind of wish I didn't. It was of poor quality. All hearsay. Lots of chapters about other players and his trainer (not that I minded, because his trainer Roberto Mancini was my favourite Italian player in the 90s and one chapter was about Eric Cantona, my favourite French player and Manchunian). Poorly written, with a fair amount of factual mistakes.

message 242: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Blocher | 64 comments I'm going with Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. My hobby is reading and going to bookstore to feed my hobby.

Tomatoland is great. I read it years ago.

Also recommend: For All the Tea in China: Espionage, Empire and the Secret Formula for the World's Favourite Drink by Sarah Rose. It's amazing! A friend told me the story and I always thought he had exaggerated, but no!

I'll be reading Wicked- also on your list for my 06- Plant on the cover.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

message 248: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 21 comments For travel related hobbies, I'd recommend "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" by J. Maartin Troost. There's actually no sex or cannibals (that I remember) but it's a hilarious travel/living abroad non-fiction book.

I'll probably read a cozy mystery based on a hobby for this one....
