Rachael | 136 comments If we count book clubs as a hobby, you've got The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler, which I've been meaning to read for a while, or The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe, which I had for the 2017 book about a difficult topic prompt

Rachael | 136 comments Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell could work, as she has her own hobby: writing

I really enjoyed both of these books!

I read a lot of hiking books to prepare for a long-distance walk earlier this year, and I really liked Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America, One Story at a Time. I don't know anyone else who's read it, so you might want to look at that if you're looking for something new.

Some ideas for writers and one for all of us readers!

If You Want to Write: A Book about Art, Independence and Spirit by Brenda Ueland

The Maeve Binchy Writers' Club by Maeve Binchy

How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author by Janet Evanovich

How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster

Chrissi (clewand84) | 238 comments I have Cooking for Geeks: Real Science, Great Cooks, and Good Food - recommend it!

I also recommend A Fork in the Road for cooking & traveling in one.

I may read Fragrant Heart (also cooking & traveling), Driving Hungry: A Memoir, or The Miniaturist (dollhouses, miniatures).

message 58: by Tina (new)

Tina (trwriteratwork) | 42 comments I've had Fangirl and The Shadow of the Wind sitting on my shelves for too long. Fangirling, writing, reading - any of these will work! Also, Heartless (baking).

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón Heartless by Marissa Meyer

You could cross count this with the "written by a musician" category! some suggestions for those:
Just Kids
Boys in the Trees: A Memoir
Testimony: A Memoir
Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl

I was planning to look for something about cooking or travel so A Fork in the Road sounds perfect. Thanks!

I didn't know there were scrapbooker books! I'm already on the list at the library for one of these. Thanks for the suggestion.

Marci Williams | 1 comments Any ideas for books/stories about running or ultra running? That's my passion/hobby and not a genre I would normally read about.

Thanks!

message 63: by Rachel (new)

Rachelnyc | 186 comments Rachel wrote: "Is it intended to be about our hobby, or any kind of hobby?"

The way it's written allows for any hobby. I'm going to try to read one about a personal hobby but my back-ups are not related to my own hobbies.

message 65: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (dakterpeppir) If anyone needs a photography book, The Bridges of Madison County will work!

Have you read Finding Ultra, Revised and Updated Edition: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself by Rich Roll? It's nonfiction, and although I don't aspire to that level of running I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

message 67: by Leanne (new)

Leanne Colton (ohiogirl1975) I may do The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend since one of my favorite hobbies is reading

If you're not opposed to picking up a middle grade book, how about Maniac Magee?

message 69: by Krissy (new)

Krissy | 16 comments Someone might have mentioned this one, I read this for another prompt last year ;
Knitting - The Friday Night Knitting Club

there is a whole series

Bill Bryson has some great stuff about hiking and walking. A Walk in the Woods was excellent.

message 71: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 767 comments Ok, so...this is a toughie, but also an incredible prompt!

I want to read about a personal hobby, so that basically means just reading, writing, working out or watching tv... I think I'm going to go with writing, and read A.L. Kennedy's On Writing. I love her. And I like to fool myself that one day I'll dredge a novel from my muddy depths.

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running: If you're a fan of Haruki Murakami, this is a nice insight into him.
Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen: About a Mexican tribe of ultrarunners
Marathon Woman: Running the Race to Revolutionize Women's Sports: This is my favorite about Kathrine Switzer
A Race Like No Other: 26.2 Miles Through the Streets of New York: I'll be reading this before running next year's NYC marathon

message 73: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments This prompt has made me realize that I’ve never really had much in the way of hobbies. I used to travel, so I may read something about travelling - and to keep it personal, based in Europe or Asia. I used to run and it turns out there’s even a short story on Goodreads that is about the Hash House Harriers, which is a group I’ve run with on three continents.

Otherwise, reading/book clubs, board games?, maybe something about a Comic Con.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments I'm not that bothered about reading about a personal hobby, so I'll probably leave this one to chance. Maybe it'll be something I'd like as a hobby if I had more talent/time/money!

message 75: by Jess (last edited Nov 15, 2018 04:29AM) (new)

Jess Penhallow | 427 comments My hobby is theatre. There has got to be a great ensemble comedy about an am-dram group. There is so much potential for characters:

- The semi-professional who thinks she knows more than anyone else
- The older woman who desperately wants to play characters younger than herself
- The older man who gets away with playing young characters because there aren't enough men
- The shy girl who's actually really talented
- The guy who is just there to pick up girls (bonus if he has a sexual awakening and hooks up with the gay choreographer)
- The lovely old lady who's been involved since the group started but is a bit useless
- The bossy overly involved committee chair
- General bitchiness and diva behaviour

Something like Drama but for adults

It has to exist! And I will find it!

It says A hobby, not YOUR hobby, so I take it to mean any hobby

message 81: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments Housework? Family time?

As a hobby?

To me, spending time with your family sort of supercedes any idea of hobby as activities go.

And I guess I actually quite like folding laundry, as housework goes, but I can’t imagine calling that a hobby.

Though I guess then you could basically read any book about a family or anything book about decluttering and have them count.

This list made me laugh. Like renting the movie is the fun part not watching it. Sleeping! Relaxing! Is this data taken from a dating site where people feel they need to enter a hobby and don't really have any?

I think a hobby is something you enjoy doing, don't get paid for and don't *have* to do.

Force of Nature by Jane Harper meant to be mystery/hiking holiday gone wrong. Might be what I go with.
The Lost City of Z would work for travel/hiking too.

Growing Old Outrageously https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Oldish ladies retired and going travelling, doing all the things they wish they had done sooner, and making the most of the lives they have left. Funny and inspirational if you want to retire in mischief rather than elegance.

Running with the Pack https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... starts off as him running to keep his dogs exercised but he loves it so...…

The Accidental Adventurer https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Not just running but he did do that cross the sahara one in the book, and a random camel endurance race, paddled across the Atlantic and a variety of other crazy things. Written so he doesn't seem self-promoting too and he is happy to fess up when he did stupid things. An idol of mine.

I'm also a knitter and crocheter (I started keeping my PopSugar lists on one of my Ravelry reading groups, before discovering this Goodreads group this year). If you're on Ravelry.com, join me in my reading group(s)! (I'm nuts4fiber on Rav).

Coincidently, I've got A Stash of One's Own: Knitters on Loving, Living with, and Letting go of Yarn, by Clara Parkes, on Overdrive right now!

I'll probably read Knitting Yarns: Writers on Knitting, by Ann Hood. I bought a few used copies, to throw in with my holiday gifts for my knitting friends. Maybe I'll hold onto one copy for myself, or save them all for birthday gifts next year?

Not fiction, but I thought it was very interesting, was the book I bought for my Sierra-hiking brother (I read it before sending to him). It's about a ranger who mysteriously goes missing in the Sierras: The Last Season, by Eric Blehm

message 95: by Kim (new)

Kim | 215 comments I'm sure all the booklovers here have already read this one, but I love it! The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

For photography lovers, like my husband, any of the Ransom Riggs' series of Miss Peregrine books, because the books have all been inspired by mysterious, vintage photographs: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Hollow City, and Library of Souls

Monica (booksarelove) | 121 comments I'm going to read Mazes and Monsters by Rona Jaffe, which wikipedia says is "a cautionary tale regarding the then-new hobby of fantasy role-playing games." It's not one of my hobbies, but it is A hobby, and I really like the Rona Jaffe novels that I have read, so I'm sure I'll like this one.
