SOLVED. YA (or younger) sci-fi about boy who befriends a young alien. [s]

In the mid-1980s, as an upper elementary school student in the United States, I loved a book (possibly it was a series) about a kid around that age who meets and befriends an alien. I want to say the alien's name was Martin, but I might be confusing it with Marvin the Martian in Bugs Bunny. The alien is also a kid, in a sense, although he is technologically advanced, eats a pill instead of dinner to get all the nutrients he needs, etc. Possibly the alien comes with him to school and pretends to be a student, but I'm not sure.
