MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I ask this question because I was looking at my Fictfact and it never seems to be satisfied.

I own all the books on this list...but some of them I just bought. Wait. I don't own Home as yet. And IDK if I even want to read it.

I JUST bought On a Red Station, Drifting and I've been waiting for a WEEK.

all I want is a new shiny

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Mine is more of a reminder of interesting books that I've seen or heard about that I don't want to forget exist. But it's not really a shopping list nor is it even a reading list for me. I have tried to do both, and my reading moods are just so damn mercurial that I can be like "I WANT TO READ THIS NOW"... acquire it... and then 5 seconds later I want to read this OTHER thing.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I feel like I do that alllll the time.

I don't want to read almost any of my new books...nor my old books...

I want NEW new books. Or not. IDK.

But that damn Fictfact list is making me itchy.

Same here. I don't buy many books unless I come across them at a book sale or kindle sale, so the shopping list thing doesn't work for me. I'm also a mood reader and tend to pick up books as they call to me.

It's crazy that sometimes I will pick up books not even on my TBR list, even though there is like 1,000+ listed. I've gotten to the point where I don't even add books to it anymore unless there is a real interest and comes with recommendations.

message 6: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have had to go through and purge my TBR list a couple times... well, several mini-purges really. I was tired of coming across stuff and being like "What are you doing here? Go away!" lol

Same!

Time management is also a factor for me. I can plan to read all of the things, but life just laughs in my face.

I really think I need to do this. Sometimes I'm just weirded out by the things I find there.

Same for me, I tend to go crazy with adding books, go look at my tbr...obviously I'm not going to read all or go buy all those books. So I make smaller tbrs shelves for ones I want to read soonish (that's the name of it) and I'm always adding and removing books from it as mood changes. I make a mini tbr list for each month on my computer but I rarely stick to it. I read a few off it then a book from the library comes in, more like 5 or more come that I was on hold for that I didn't plan in my monthly reading that I will pick at, heck sometimes they get sent back with out being looked at because the mood I was in when I made the request has changed.

Hahaha! Me too. I did a big purge towards the beginning of the year and haven't looked at it since. Even my physical shelves need some purging. I pick up stuff with good intentions, but sometimes I wonder what the heck I was thinking when I picked it up. lol.

Wow! You spend a lot of time managing your lists.

If I look at my lists too much, it makes me grumpy. And makes me feel like I have nothing to read.

Which makes NO sense, I know. But it seriously makes me go out and look for more books.

message 12: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ditto! I have books on my shelves and I'm like WHY DID I BUY YOU?

I'm been playing with my books since I can remember, as a child/preteen sitting down on my computer making lists of my books by pub date. That was a goal of mine to organize then read them in order of publication.

I've been trying to be good and read what I own, so the past few weeks I've been "shopping" on my physical tbr. Trying to get back into the mood or get that excitement back for ones I've spent money on. So many times I've bought a book and can't wait to read it only to lay down on the shelf or stack and go pick up something else and that book get's lost with the others.

message 14: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That is a commendable but crazy goal!

What Becks said.

But then, I think of my TBR as a ginormous mountain that I have to scale to discover something good. Sometimes books are low hanging fruit. Sometimes I have to climb to its heights and almost die of frostbite.

I have an overactive imagination.

Same, and same. Every now and then I'll pare out books in the "to read" folder or amazon wish list that don't look familiar anymore.

I did a TBR challenge for owned books this year and about half of the stuff I've read this year has been from "personal archives." Despite my butterfly brain I enjoyed reading the backlogged books a lot. The intention going forward is to keep up with that and not worry too much about ebook sales if I don't intend to start reading the book that second.

message 17: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I did one of those as well... and I read 50 books from my personal shelves, and then pretty much stopped reading entirely for the last 4 months. I suck. Bleh.

Me, too. I got out a lot of books I hadn't looked at, lol. But I also acquired a lot of books that I read asap as well. O_O

I also suck.

message 19: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments So, for me, my TBR is pretty much a shopping list... or a reminder list of books I saw that looked interesting to get back to someday... but that doesn't make it not effective for me because that's how I use it.

I don't have a separate "want to read" versus "books I own" list... I mean, not really. I own, like, 5 books I haven't read. My TBR helps me find something when I don't know what's next to read, and to deal with the moodiness issue, I usually put about 5 or 6 books on hold at the library at a time, of varying types, so I can decide what to read based on a) when it comes in and b) what I'm in the mood for.

Stop being so organized, lol.

But seriously, that's super good. I wish my TBR wasn't such a monster of randomness.

message 21: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Seriously. I think I own like 500 books I have not read. O_o

message 22: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) My owned number of unread books is closer to Becky's than colleen's. That number could be anywhere between 260 and infinity, and really I can't guess how many it might actually be. I'm trying to be better and read older books in my collection, purge DNFs and stuff that I don't care about anymore, etc., but it's like chipping away at a glacier with a tiny needle. Long story short I suck, too.

message 23: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 8 comments The number of unread owned books I have is probably to scary to even find out....

message 24: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 125 comments I put only owned or checked-out-of-library books on it. So I have other shelves for books I want to buy or get out or which aren't out yet.

message 25: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 119 comments My TBR consists only of books/audiobooks/magazines that I own. I use FictFact to keep track of series so I know what books I've read and what is next in the series. Not absolutely required as Fantastic Fiction does a great job. I currently have over 1000 books on my TBR and that doesn't include free stuff.

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 119 comments Becky wrote: "Seriously. I think I own like 500 books I have not read. O_o"

I have more than that Becky (over 1000 unread), but it's ok. My available money for ebooks and audiobooks will be crushed in another couple of years, so if I can get them on sale now, great! I did a focus last year and read over 60 owned books (total read was twice that), so there is always progress.

My TBR here on Goodreads are primarily books that fellow Goodreads friends have recommended to me or things they were reading that was of interest to me. I get them when on sale.

message 27: by Jay (new)

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments I think it's a bit of both. What I think of as my TBR are books I want to read and have easy access to. My GR "Want to Read" list is often just "Hey, look! A shiny!", but I will sometimes consult it.
I have read 16 on my TBR this year, so progress is being made.

message 28: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

message 29: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) Since November--and since January specifically--I've been actually getting better about my TBR. My "read vs bought" is at -3 for the year so far, which might sound bad, but last year it would have easily been in the 20s or more.

I joined KU and have just been everywhere, lol.
