It's so hilarious! The author makes time for cracking a joke even in midst of a serious conflict. For instance, how Bilbo keeps tripping and getting lost everytime they are on a run. And this part...

Chapter 9 (view spoiler)[ Bilbo is becoming more and more responsible as the time passes. He's also using the ring. I wish Gandalf were with them...Things would be even more interesting with Gandalf. I am more than halfway through the book. Really loving it so far. It's time for their final adventure. Can't wait to discover whether they'll find the treasure or not. (hide spoiler)]

Wow I was shocked when we got the POV of smaug the dragon. It was so interesting!
I cried when thorin died and a sadder by that.
But over 5stars of a book I loved it !

Also have you both read the series before or know the story? Just so I know whether to talk foreshadowing or about the future plotlines or whatever

I've read both The Hobbit and LOTR series a few times so don't worry about spoilers for me :) I've also listened to them both on audio and found them really accessible. The only bits which were tricky were thinking I knew what events came next, as I'd seen the movie adaptations so many times, and having that disproven when things were slightly different.

I'm halfway through that chapter. I dislike long chapters, I'd much rather have double the chapters but half the length.

I'm on chapter 5 now and loving this as much as my first time reading it. There's something so cosy and autumnal feeling about Tolkien's work. I also find him super funny in some areas too.

Chapter One - (view spoiler)[I love the descriptions of the hobbit house. There's a place not too far from me where they have made a hobbit house air bnb and I really need to stay there, next year! I also love the way the hobbits live. Their slow and quiet ways of life is definitely appealing to me!

I'm finding this such a funny read already. I love how Bilbo's dislike for adventures stems from them making one late for dinner! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Two - (view spoiler)[The adventure has begun in a miserable fashion with lots of rainfall. The dwarves forcing their burglar to scout ahead made the reader aware that, despite his reservations, his small size and quietness actually do make him a good burglar and spy, even though he failed to pick their pockets successfully. Chapter Three - (view spoiler)[There have been references to adventures with other side characters occurring before. I wonder if these appear in The Silmarillion or other books? (hide spoiler)]

Chapter Four - (view spoiler)[More rain, this time a thunderstorm, leading the group to take shelter in a cave, which leads them to more danger. (hide spoiler)]

I agree! So much happened in each chapter that they each felt like complete little adventures in themselves.

This is quite a long and confusing book for young readers but I know it is aimed towards children at the same time so I bet this style makes it a bit easier for them to follow everything. It also makes it really nice to read it a chapter a day.
