I don't find a GoodReads link. I will create one. I think others would like the story.

We just adore that film! So much fun to be had from it. It's one of our go-to films when we need a bit of a lift. I agree with you about Alan Rickman in it. He's got all the best lines: "You broke the bloody ship", "To see if there's a pub", "I see you managed to get your shirt off" to quote just three of them. Like many, I'd listen to him read the phone book. He was never anything less than watchable on screen and is sadly missed.

Thanks for the recommendation, Joy. I will definitely read that. I am almost finished the book I am reading now so it will be next. Temps in the mid to upper 90s here. Hope you are cooler in the high elevations there.

Anji | 735 comments Time for another update. Mostly short one-shots, some of which are from the Meryton Press "summer holiday" themed postings on Fridays. Worth a read if you haven't done so already.

136. Alias Thomas Bennet: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Suzan Lauder ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A loving Mr. and Mrs. Bennet? Mr. Bennet taking an interest in the upnringing of all of his daughters? And Darcy has a feeling he's met some of the family before. What mysteries lie behind all of this? There is a scene of sexual violence (not involving Elizabeth) but it's not overly detailed.

137. Pairings! by JoanHall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ unpublished
Four short chapters, one-shot. Had to give it five stars just for the sheer craziness!

138. Shipden's Bells and Cockle Shells by Ann Galvia posted at Meryton Press ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
http://merytonpress.com/shipdens-bell...
Darcy and Elizabeth are married and spending a summer holiday in Norfolk. They hear a local legend about a drowned village.

139. Two weeks in June by Jan Hahn posted at Meryton Press 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
http://merytonpress.com/two-weeks-in-...
Paranormal. What if canon Darcy and Elizabeth could travel forward in time for two weeks in June each year, forever?

140. Into the Wilderness by Belen Paccagnella posted at Meryton Press ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
http://merytonpress.com/into-the-wild...
Modern setting. Elizabeth is from South America, married to uptight Brit Darcy. They take a camping trip into the wilds of her home country!

141. The Green Ball by Ms. Pimprenelle ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ unpublished
Author's blurb: 'Miss Bingley wants to make sure that the Netherfield ball—and her superior skills as a hostess—will be remembered by the inhabitants of Hertfordshire. Things will not quite happen as she had planned.'

142. Encounter at Ramsgate by Kelly Miller posted at Meryton Press ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
http://merytonpress.com/an-encounter-...
What if Darcy and Elizabeth meet for the first time in a haberdashers' in Ramsgate?

143. Wickham's Revenge by Rafedurk Unpublished ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wickham comes upon Darcy and Elizabeth walking in the woods at Rosings and decides to exert revenge for perceived wrongs. It doesn't end how he expects. Quite a shock!

144. Until Tomorrow by Rafedurk unpublished ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Darcy arrives in Meryton a month later than in canon, so he's missed the Meryton Assembly and thus no 'tolerable' comment is ever uttered. He sees Wickham before W. knows he's around and the day after, he meets Elizabeth for the first time under entirely different circumstances. One shot.

145. Rydal Mount by Brigid Huey posted at Meryton Press ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
http://merytonpress.com/rydal-mount-b...
A summer holiday in the Lake District for a married Darcy and Elizabeth.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 633 comments 180. Walk with Me: a Pride and Prejudice Variation (unpublished) - 4 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Elizabeth has several significant conversations in Kent that diverge from canon, leading to different results. Technically, it's very well written, but I was bored after the first few chapters...and it's long.

181. Seeking Advice (unpublished) - 4 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Elizabeth cleverly deflects Mr. Collins's marriage proposal, sending him scurrying from Longbourn. Short and funny.

#182-184 - I got the first three volumes (out of eight) in this series with K.U. Sherlock Holmes & Elizabeth Bennet Mystery Collection Vol 1 Of the three books in this collection, this is the best.

182. Death at the Netherfield Park Ball - 3.5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Puts Elizabeth Bennet together with Sherlock Holmes. Nice concept, but the execution is weak. No Mr. Darcy here, just Elizabeth and Mr. Holmes.

183. The Mystery of the Indian Diadem - 2.5 stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
See above. This is book #2. This completely leaves the plot of P&P behind. Elizabeth stays with the Bingleys (Jane and Charles have married) in London so she can work with Mr. Holmes. Her character isn't really JA's anymore, and the mystery isn't that interesting.

184. The Peculiar Doctor Barnabus - 2.5 stars
See #183. (I didn't bother posting a review for this.)

Needless to say, I won't be continuing on with the series! But it made me remember how much I loved Arthur Conan Doyle's books, so I think I'll revisit some of them when I'm on break from JAFF.

I don't think this would be your cup of tea, Sheila. Even though it's nicely written, it lacks that spark between Darcy and Elizabeth I know you always look for. No passion or serious angst. Meh.

And thank you for your encouragement!

Anji | 735 comments Thanks for all the comments, folks. It's been a long three weeks since our first emergency trip to hospital with Trevor's heart problem but I'm happy to report that he's doing really well now. He's getting stronger both physically and mentally every day, it seems. I think it really knocked his self-confidence at first, especially as it came so totally out of the blue. One of the cardiac rehab nurses paid a house call this week and was pleased with the way he's following the rehab programme, so that was another boost for us.

I can't remember if you listen to audiobooks Debbie, but Audible (in the UK at least) have a complete performance of the entire Sherlock Holmes canon by Stephen Fry. Around 70 hours of listening pleasure and it only cost me the one credit. Great value. He does the occasional piece of introduction between the volumes and it's obvious he's an enormous fan himself.

Congrats on the progress towards Pemberley, too!

I'm so sorry I haven't dipped in with my sympathies for your husband until now--he sounds like a strong person who hates being sick (I'm kind of like that myself, at least the hating going to doctors part), and I know people like that can be difficult patients! Having a health scare really does shake your confidence.

Stephen Fry had a health scare of his own last year, and I'm sure he'd be proud that his work is helping you through your husband's.

No worries, Mary. He definitely is a strong person who'd never spent even a single night in hospital in all of his 70 years until this happened. Right now, we're both very thankful for the institution that is our NHS. Although we've both paid our contributions through our pay packets all of our working lives (I'm still working, so I still contribute), all of the treatment he's received has been free at point of delivery. And as he's over 60, the cocktail of medicines he's now on is also free (he was only on one, for his thyroid, before this but now has an additional seven to take!).

I lived in the UK for two years, and one of my friends was a nurse, so I have a very positive impression of the NHS. Not to get too political, but I know that although recent governments have unfortunately slashed funding for it, the NHS continues to be a wonderful institution and provides great care.

I do hope at some point your husband will get a more manageable medication schedule, though. Eight is quite a lot on the stomach, as well as have to remember to take, period!

message 534: by Debbie (last edited Jul 27, 2019 04:00PM) (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 633 comments Anji, it's so great to hear that things are going well. As you may recall, my husband Kurt had a rude awakening regarding his health a few months back. Nothing nearly as serious as what Trevor has gone through, but it sounds like they have similar personalities. He's always been very active and took his health for granted. Learning that he has atrial fibrillation/AFib and must take a slew of meds every day threw him into deep depression for a while - said he "feels old." Kurt's finally come out of it and is more like his old self, but he still has bad days at times. It's a tough psychological adjustment for these tough old birds. Just stay as patient as you can with him and keep loving the guy! He'll bounce back eventually.

message 535: by Anji (new)

Anji | 735 comments Mary - yes, eight meds is a lot, but one is only for a year and another may not be necessary for much longer. We're managing them well so far and as a pharmacist, I'd be pretty upset if we weren't! One of the meds is, in fact, to protect the stomach against the rest.

Debbie - I'm really pleased things are looking up for Kurt. Our two men do indeed sound so much alike. Right now, matters are compounded by the fact that we're still grieving over the loss of Rodeo two and a half months ago. Little things to do with that will set us off. For instance today, we were looking at the Google Earth view of our house, which we know was only taken in the spring of last year, and realised that we could see one of our dogs on the lawn. Don't know which one, but as we've lost both of them since 8th October, it's a poignant snapshot in time.

About 5 months after my little Cairn died, I got take-out chicken to bring home. Without a thought in my head, I broke off a bit of chicken and dropped it for Dinah. I had tears when I realized I would have to clean it up myself.

And now tears more than 2 1/2 years later just thinking about her.

Know what you mean, Rose. On a Sunday, I always cook a roast dinner: beef, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, veggies and gravy. Our two boys loved Yorkshire puddings and I'd cook extra just for them. Now, after nearly ten years of doing that, I have to remind myself every weekend not to cook the extras.

message 544: by Anji (new)

Anji | 735 comments Marlene, it Is rather remarkable, isn't it? The only hospital admission he'd had before was for a hernia repair about eight years ago and that was done as day surgery. My first time was at 36 with a threatened miscarriage and was in for about a week. Everything turned out OK thank goodness, as I'd had trouble getting pregnant in the first place and our son is now nearly 27. Only a couple of short stays since for minor stuff.

message 545: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dmbrown) | 633 comments It's yet another thing your husband and mine have in common, Anji. Aside from a hernia surgery when he was a child that Kurt doesn't even remember, he'd never been admitted as a hospital patient until this March. I think that's a big part of what made it so scary for him.
