children's fantasy, boy travels through time using toy building blocks

I'm not sure what year it was published but I read it in the mid-1980's, its storyline is somewhat similar to Behind The Attic Wall. A boy is having a hard time getting along with his father, and climbs into the attic. He finds some old toy blocks, worn and darkened by oils from a child playing with them. Suddenly, he finds he's travelled back in time. He meets a boy his own age, the owner of the blocks, which are now pale and new-looking. I don't want to give much more detail because I don't know how much is too much. If I did it wrong I apologize, this is my first time and I'm not 100% sure I understood the guidelines correctly. Please forgive me.
