SOLVED. Novel about working class boy who wants to be an actor [s]

I read a book about 4 years ago and now I can't remember the title. It was about about a working class boy who wanted to be an actor to the disappointment of his father. He started working at a local theatre, behind the scenes, helping with the stage and lights, and the father allowed it so long as he got paid and contributed to the household. Also to earn money he helped care for an older lady in town. Any help would be much appreciated.

I believe it was teen fiction, and was set in about 1970s England. I might be slightly off with the time period though. Thanks for the reply.
