Name change from Smyth to Oliphant

Loved this book, but am confused about the change in Eleanor's last name from Smyth to Oliphant. Can't find an explanation. She was Smyth in the newspaper articles about the fire, but now she is Oliphant. Never married. So huh?

At one point, Eleanor tells Raymond that social services changed her last name to help her avoid notoriety.
