Read this in early 70's. Three unicorns are running a race. The main character is the unicorn with a curved horn, and she starts out in last place in the race and stays there throughout. Along the way they encounter people needing help: a fisherman with a net full of fish that's too heavy for him to lift, a boy stuck in the mud, and I can't remember the third person. The first 2 unicorns and too concerned with losing time or getting their coats muddy to help. The unicorn with the curved horn always stops to help, despite being in last place. It turns out the people needing help were tests, and the curved horn unicorn wins the race because she passed the test of helping the people in need.

Hardback book with color illustrations. The images I remember are the unicorn using her curved horn to pull the fisherman's net out of the water, and the muddy boy sitting on her back. May have been part of a book of short stories.

I think it's a short story called "The king's pet" by Mary Lou Alsin. It's used in classrooms for little kids so it's also included in a couple teacher resource packs.
