Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) Fifty Shades of Grey question

1112 views
Why did you read FSoG in the first place?

The hype. I didn't even finish book 2 because it was so boring and the writing style was so annoying. Nothing really happened.
No big plot twist. I don't usually read 'romance' novels so I'm used to plots that actually have something more interesting happen to the characters than 'oh no, [man] is actually abusive but since I'm the type of main character who is dumb in love I'll still go back to him anyway'. Snore. Boring and problematic.
That people love these kind of books shows that our society has a lot to learn.
These books have nothing at all to do with BDSM, btw.

For me I read it because my girlfriends kept saying it was great, but what really swayed me was the libraries out here banning it! I knew I had to read it. I LOVED it! I googled all the terms and bdsm, and I swear if I knew about BDSM when I was in my 20's I would have found myself a Dom and tried it out. My husband and I tried out a few of the toys and we have more sex now than we did in our 20's. FSOG got me reading again. Was it the best book I ever read? No, but it sure was memorable and I loved it.

I read the book after I saw who was going to play Christian Grey in the film. Jamie Dornan is very HOT. And also I was curious to know what the fuss was. And then I got hooked on all things romantic and erotic :)

I read it because everyone was talking about it, but I found it particularly juvenile in its writing style, it could have been so much better.

Pervocracy is/was doing a chapter by chapter discussion of it, and I wanted to know what was going on with that.
Also, having heard that BDSM was handled poorly, and being someone who often fields questions about that stuff, I wanted to know what misconceptions it was likely to introduce.
What I found instead was a poorly written but eerily accurate description of what abuse can look like in a kinky relationship, which is a *huge* deal because a lot of people in the BDSM community insist that it can't happen.

Just for the porn. The story was sh*t, though.

I've read it because of trailer, i admit it.
It sucks i cant stand it , i cant even finish it Ff si pop ice

I read it because of the hype when it first came out and I wanted to see if it was worth the publicity. I never made it through the entire Fifty Shade of Grey collection because the second book was not that interesting for me. I like the style of writing. I enjoyed the character development and overall theme but I did not find it as scandalous as the media made it out to be. I can see why it was hyped up because it is a good starter book into the genre of erotica.

To address your final question, I choose books based on recommendations, my mood and what suits my comfort zone. I used to read so many romance and Nancy Drew novels with I was a child and teenager. In general, I prefer fictional stories with a side of romance. Often time I will just go in a store or library and just ask what do the people working recommend because it allows me to discover other genres.

Read it cause of the hype and dude I'd never read porn before! I was hella curious!
was painful to get through though, terrible writing style in my opinion or maybe I'm just used to heavier literature but gaah.
What made me finish it was me literally on bed rest before an operation and having nothing better to do to pass the time

My sista in law was talking bout it. So when she finished one book I read it after her. And so forth and so on til we finished the books. Now I got my ticket ready to go see this movie I have waited for at least what 2 years now. But screw it I hope its worth all the wait.

i read it because i found it under my cousins bed and was curious to what exzacly she was reading :)

It was recommended by a friend and I loved each and every book. Did not hear any hype and I don't follow best sellers list so... there you have it.

I heard a lot about the book, and decided I might as well read the trilogy. Once I started I was drawn into the plot, Christian's back story, and the romance side. I mean, the bdsm wasn't terrible ;), but that isn't what drew me in and what made me read the other two books. There is a lot more to it than what most people think.

I was curious, everyone was talking about this series and how good it was (well, not really) and I ended up buying all of them but HONESTLY not my thing. Maybe when I was a big fan of Twilight...but after (5 years I think?) not my thing AT ALL!

I wondered what's all the hype about and ended up dissapointed.

I bought the trilogy because I heard it was so famous(without even reading the synopses). However, after reading the synopses I realized that I shouldn't bought it in the first place. Later, my friend borrowed and told that she loves the trilogy so much. I finished reading the 1st two, on my 3rd book now. The storyline is good. I just couldn't stand the xxx scenes and Ana's inner goddess.

I read a few years ago because I found that many people had read the book, then I was curious and I read it. Its not my favorite, but I like it.

I read it because of a friend of mine recommend it. She kept saying that it was beautiful, at first I didn't listen to her but when I find a time to read, this was the first book that I read. And It was Incredibly awesome. Kudos to E.L James. She's a Brilliant!

I read the book prior to the movie deal because of the subject matter. I was hugely disappointed and never even bothered to pick up the remaining books in the series.

EL James knows next to nothing about the subject matter in question and it showed in her insulting portrayal of the main characters and juvenile writing. What she needed, was a decent editor, not a movie deal. Needless to say - not a fan.

My supervisor at the time had heard of the books and I had seen them in store, but it never dawned on me to actually read them. She wanted to read them, so we agreed as a form of Book Club kind of thing. Well….We started reading them, but I don't think she ever completed the first one. By the time I knew it, I was telling her that I was reading the last book. She was shocked. It was an ok read for me.

A friend of mine kept telling me I should read the books, so I finally gave in and got the books from the library and finished all three books in two days!

I was curious, I wanted to know if it was as bad as everyone says it is.

It wasn't. There were only a couple of times when I wanted to throw it across the room, and those weren't times when her oh so HORRIFYING and INEPT writing hurT MAH INTELECTUEL-ISH-NES. They were simply times when I got too frustrated with Grey's behaviour to keep reading. I definitely don't get the hype, it wasn't great erotica or anything despite my fascination with the BDSM scene (my inner goddess was asleep most of the time), but I don't get the bashing either. Like usually, it isn't as good as praised or as bad as bashed.

I also read the book just to see what all the fuss is about. And I am not impressed. Also had hard time finishing the book because it was boring. Too simple, predictable, ect. In my opinion it is a book for teenagers who don't really like reading :D

I read the book because of the hype. Breezed through the first book, second book took longer and I started to skip pages, third book took forever and I skipped lots of pages!!! First book had a story, second book was getting a little boring with the same stuff over and over, third book had turned into a romance novel with 4 or 5 pages of , "oh why, why does he keep doing this to me", ugh! I only finished it because that's the kind of person I am.

I read it because I heard it was a bad book and I make fun of bad books. I read some of the prose online before picking it up and I couldn't resist.

I've read it because of my sister. She's the one introduce me the fsog book while back then.

I had to read it to see how shitty it was.
JFC, it's the shittiest book I've ever read...and I read Twilight.
Everything about this book is wrong. The BDSM portrayal is completely off the mark and Christian is so emotionally, mentally, and physically abusive, it's disgusting. Not to mention the fact that he has no concern for what's her faces boundaries and basically tells her that she will, in time, learn to do the things she said no too. Sorry, but no, that is rape. Forcing someone into sexual acts they're not comfortable with because of your bullshit issues is sexual assault. Let's also not forget he's a massive stalker.

The fact that women think Christian is amazing and sexy and sweet, makes me want to vomit.

Twilight is Intro to Abusive Relationships; 50 Shades is Abusive Relationships 101.

I was challenging myself after seeing reviews and dramatic readings of the book on Youtube, but I just couldn't get through it after the first time Ana and Christian hit the sheets, it was just stupid and I was laughing so hard I had to flee the bookstore I was in to keep from disturbing others with the hilarity.

Because I can..:)

Normally i'm not into that kind of books,i don't even bother looking at them, but the buzz around this book made me curious(said it's about a rich guy with a fucked up personality treating his girl like shit),the first chapters was boring i almost stopped reading it(almost)then i think like everyone else i got hooked,i ended up reading the series about 7 times

To answer the initial question: only because of its popularity. I wanted to know why this popularity. I still don't understand. It's sh*t.

I have a lot of experience in BDSM and the author knows nothing about it.

I read the books but I found this book to be interesting in explaining why women found the trilogy so addictive and how they related the books to their own relationships http://goo.gl/aziGTk

I read it only because everyone else was reading it and it was so hyped up. I hate every second of the book but I can't start a book and leave it unfinished. So I struggled through the book and skipped many pages.

I wanted to see what the hype was all about.

Actually, I read it because there was this talk about Ian Somerhalder playing Christian, and as obsessed as I was with the vampire diaries then, I was voting for Ian without even reading the book and then I read the book and became AGAINST Ian playing Christian. I LOVED the book, and Ian Somerhalder is by no means the Christian I imagined.

I read it because there was so much discussion about it,everywhere I went it seem like someone was talking about his book. I typically don't read BDSM themed books. However I was a little curious that there had to be more the story than just that or people wouldn't be talking about it everywhere because that's nothing new and romance literature. I wanted to know what the big deal was.after having read it and now reading 50 shades darker I think part of the hype is the fact that it talks about relationships in general and all the stages and things that people in relationships go through whether BDSM is involved or not and what are the lines of a relationship so I think there's a lot of interesting questions and topics that the book tries to take on and a different way that is previously been seen. Though I have to tell you II financed Asia quite annoying I know she's one of the most annoying women on the planet and I can't do you like Ray would ever want to be with her she's whiny and needy and never likes anything

I read it because of the hype and recommendations. It got me curious, I've been reading paperbacks of mills&boon and silhouette romances and even sweet dreams as early as 5th grade. I've read "Laces" and the bdsm theme was new and somewhat taboo, so I went ahead and read the trilogy and I loved the plot and story line. It was a good love story really, the bdsm and sex scenes just enhanced its entertainment value.

After reading the FSoG trilogy I've researched bdsm on the net and looked for similar themed books, and there are lots of really good authors who wrote books with this theme and genre (Cherise Sinclair is really good!) and I guess in a way E.L. James was instrumental in making this theme or plot mainstream and introduced a really should I say uncommon plot to the masses.

I just read the first book last week even though I bought all three books a few years ago and just didn't start reading. The plot got me interested and I haven't heard anything of the books when I bought them. I really enjoyed the first book and I could smack myself for not starting sooner..

I knew it would drive my hubby bonkers by reading it (only due to the fact that he does NOT like romance novels or fictions writing...!!). At first it was an ok (but very fun!) read. I have read much better books on the topics of BDSM, but this was good. After I finished the entire series, I sat back and thought about what the book was truly about and what struck me as odd was not what I read between the pages but the symbolism of overcoming ones self and even having a person by your side to help guide you through your issues.

My husband made the remark that I was reading way to far into it... =0)

Before the hype I was attracted to the covers of the books and then it was the hype!

I got told not to read FSOG by my mum 3 years ago but as my mum said no I had to read it.
Once I had read it, I loved it, not because of the BDSM but because of the love story entwined up in it. That is what made the book if it wasn't for the love story it would of been a disastrous book but I can't deny that I didn't daydream about Christian Grey who wouldn't <3

I thought it was a normal teenage love something like hush hush but without all the supernatural stuff... Just a normal guy and chick but then...

I was reading some blogs at the time and many were blabbing on about it. So it was the first ebook I have ever bought and read on my mobile phone, as I didn't own an ereader at the time. It was also the first erotica/bdsm book I have ever read. Before that it was 95% literary fiction and some non-fiction but I wanted something easy and non-challenging, plus I was curious.I read the 3 volumes in about 3 days. I found Christian and Anastasia irritating, but I enjoyed the mobile/email banter and few other bits and pieces. The sex scenes didn't do it for me much, but I can live with that. I disliked the writing, Anastasia's "inner goddess" BS was beyond infuriating - but to be honest - I didn't think I was going to read a literary masterpiece, so my expectations were diminished. At the time I didn't even know what a fan fiction was - I wish I still didn't. This year I have read 90% romance novels and similar (100+ books). Some were atrocious! The grammar and punctuation mistakes are mind boggling (English is my 3rd language)! Then I see that they are actually published on paper, and hearing that makes me angry!!!! (ie Beautiful Bastard and the likes). The best thing about FSOG was the music that I came to know and some of the songs mentioned in the book are now in my favourites list. I may give your book a try.

I've read it because of trailer, i admit it.
It sucks i cant stand it , i cant even finish it

Hype. And I was disappointed. PRIMARILY because Ana is insipid, pointless, ungrateful and annoying. I think the average person who doesnt normally read a lot of ....erotic or even adult contemporary romance was bowled over by the graphic sexand maybe their first taste of alpha male. The rest now us are harder to impress LOL.

A women I work with who is very quiet and is into her family suggested it. I thought it was probably some boring home maker book since she was suggesting it. Little did I know I would become obsessed with it. I read it when I first came out and eventually all the women at the office started reading it along with the women in the operating room I work with. We are all planning to see the movie at midnight on when in comes out wearing our trench coats!!!!
