SOLVED. YA Fantasy book (series) about a medieval prince having to search for dragon eggs. Spoilers in comments. [s]

I read this book a very long time, so I don't remember a lot of details. I believe I read it about 8 or so years ago. The book starts with the main character, a prince, who has never left the castle in which he lives. From the castle, it appears to him that the kingdom is prosperous, but when he is forced to leave for some reason, I believe someone tried to kill him, he finds out that it was a magic illusion and the real city is run down and poor. After that I remember very little except for that, for some reason, he needs to gather the last seven or so dragon eggs to help him reclaim his kingdom.

I'm not sure why people are responding to this again after five years, but I eventually figured out that the books were from the Deltora Quest and Dragons of Deltora series.
