I've read a little bit about this subject when reading medieval history books. The pagan religions of that era required an all powerful king to be sacrificed after ruling for 7 years. Some times a king would have a mock king, who was all powerful instead of the king with the mock king being sacrificed every 7 years instead of the king.

An example of this was when King Henry II of England raised
Thomas Becket to great heights as Archbishop of Canterbury then had him sacrificed after 7 years of power. This was the premise of the book: The Swords Of December
