Silvana (silvaubrey) Halfway through Blindsight and I am ready to give up. For me it's a convoluted mess with meh plot and characters. Watts' prose style does not suit me. I think some people in this group once said it was rather overrated, IIRC.

Finished Moving Pictures which is one of the weakest Discworld books I read. I have one Industrial Revolution book left to go.

Currently immersing myself into the dragon-blood corporate world in The Empire of Ashes. I hope this last book is not as bad as Ryan's previous trilogy's finale.

For what it's worth, I didn't care for it, either. The crew is a psychological mess, and I wasn't interested in their problems. The "alien artifact entering solar system and people get sent to investigate" plot didn't add anything new to the trope. Have not figured out what the fans see in it.

Andrea | 3547 comments Finished Host of Dragons, probably the most interesting of Troop's four books (or maybe I just got so used to the dragons eating people it didn't bother me anymore?). Series is now complete.

Since I've been reading a Vampire Chronicles book for Halloween for many years now, and since Rice was kind enough to provide me with yet another one just in time for this year, I've started reading Blood Communion by Anne Rice. The plots are usually absurd but I still enjoy my yearly return to Lestat et all.

Silvana (silvaubrey) Finished with The Empire of Ashes. Pretty great with lots of battle scenes, including naval and a shitload of dragons. A good conclusion to the trilogy. Andrea, you might want to check it out if you want to read more dragon books.

Wow, there are more Lestat novels? my last Vampire Chronicle novel was Blood and Gold. Did not care much about the witches so I stopped when she mixed them with the vampires.

You're right. Apparently it has a huge fandom in Reddit. I am considering whether I should read his other novels like Starfish or The Freeze-Frame Revolution since his narrative style confuses me.

I got halfway through this & never really got into it. I found something else that I wanted to read quickly for a group & just never felt like picking this back up. It was intricate, yet pointless, so I quit.

Gary Gillen | 133 comments I finished reading Red Prophet (Book #2 of The Tales of Alvin Maker) by Orson Scott Card and How to Write Best Selling Fiction by Dean Koontz. I am reading Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. I plan to read The Autumn Republic (Book #3 of Powder Mage Trilogy) by Brian McClellan next.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments I just finished Multiverse: Exploring Poul Anderson’s Worlds, a bunch of short stories dedicated to one of the grand masters of SF. It was a pretty good read, but I wish they'd explored more of his worlds. My review is here:

That was my favorite book in that series. I wonder if he has any plans to ever complete the seventh and final book.

NekroRider | 497 comments Since my last post I finished reading Rebecca and also A Song for Quiet. Rebecca I really liked but didn't quite meet my expectations. I think my expectations were just very high since I'd been planning to read it for some time. Anyway 3.5/5 stars (3/5 here on GR) for me. Du Maurier is a ridiculously skilled writer. It's just I guess I was expecting it to be creepier. The ending was definitely captivating though in general really loved her prose. Could almost taste and smell everything she described.

Song For Quiet i rated 4.5/5 or 5/5 stars. Was even better than the first book. Cassandra Khaw is another ridiculously skilled writer. I often make note of pages in books I want to come back to and with this one I might as well have made note to reread the whole thing. Really ended with a bang too

Anyway now finished my planned Halloween horror reading minus one book that never arrived so moving into my back ups to finish up October. Just started Rosemary's Baby

Cat | 344 comments I've finished off Everfair which was an interesting book - 5 star story concept, 2 star enjoyment. Somethings were so good... but multiple narrators exhaust me.

Thank goodness my next book was Huntress, straight up high fantasy/epic quest with interesting worldbuilding and characters. Just what I needed!

Unfortunately my current book Rift Breaker is not turning out so well - Clunk, clunk, clunk...

Rachel | 531 comments Yes I felt that way about everfair as well - whole concept was very good but execution was a bit off for me. I think it’s the way the narration jumps not just people but also in time

I agree. I gave Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier 3 stars which is to say that I enjoyed it but not as much as I had hoped to. Here's my review if anyone is interested: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Andrea | 3547 comments Finished Lonesome October, as well as Blood Communion by Anne Rice. I actually managed to read all the 10 books I had planned for this month!

November is a pretty full month too, if I get Ball Lightning from the library I'll have about 8-9 books to read.

Was debating what to read next since I've got several to pick from, decided to go with The Iron Dragon's Daughter by Michael Swanwick, this will be the last series I start this year (it's a duology). It might fill in my Dystopia spot in my bingo card.
