Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I read The Joy Luck Club for the task: 2018 - read a book by an author of different ethnicity than you. The author, Amy Tan is Asian American. I gave the book 4 stars. It is my second book by this author and I really like how she portrays last century China, and the Chinese descendant who were born in the US.

Did you sign up for a task for this one? I didn't see it anywhere else and wanted to make sure I removed it if it was reserving another task. I put it in for 2015 a book that made you cry.

No, I didn’t.
I asked for these two tasks, but neither my questions, neither my completion post was in the popsugar thread. This is due to my internet acting up the past days. i have been check8ng everywhere what went through and what not.

message 108: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments No worries! Glad the tasks were open. :) I was having and issue with my updates not saving and had to go back in and add a couple that I knew I put in, but they didn't save, so I also wanted to make sure I hadn't missed them. Ah well, internet issues for both of us this week! But it still worked out.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Finished 2016 - A book set in Europe - The Watcher in the Shadows The Watcher in the Shadows by Carlos Ruiz Zafón . It's set in France.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón is yet to disappoint me. Although this book is one of his lowest rated on Goodreads, I really enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars. It had all the elements I have come to expect from him as a writer.

message 111: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments I've finished 2 books:

- 2015: A book at the bottom of your to-read list (oldest on TBR): Bitterbitch
An intense book about the inequality between women and men, about growing pains on becoming a first mom and the reality that motherhood isn't all pink and sunshine. A personal eye - opener.

- 2016: A book recommended by a family member: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

It was such a pleasure to re - read this book! I didn't know that I forgot so much about it and it annoyed me that I was comparing it with the movie. I found clues to events that I haven't found before, so that was also interesting.
The books made me think of the books of 'The worst witch' from Jill Murphy. Her books are for younger children who wants to read Harry Potter later.
Harry Potter - books stands for a generation readers who grew up with it and I'll think we'll never forge that. It's a part of us.

message 112: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Finished 2 more:

2015 - A nonfiction book: A History of the World in 6 Glasses

Very interesting history, starting with beer. I had no idea it was such a bit part of civilization and currency. The audiobook was good, but there are some pictures in the physical book which were nice to see. No humor thrown in to make it more enjoyable... a dry history lesson.

2015 - A book that came out the year you were born (1957): The Midwich Cuckoos.

I found the story to be familiar, and then realized the movies, Village of the Damned were based on it. Great movies! The book was much better than I expected. Very glad I finally got around to reading it.

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments 2018 A book with a time of day in the title Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore

I gave this one 4 stars. It was a quick read for me. I wasn't a huge fan of the ending, but that's okay. Sometimes it doesn't have to turn out exactly like I want it to.

Bold Reformer: Celebrating the Gospel-Centered Convictions of Martin Luther

It was pretty good, but not as good as the reviews I read before buying said it would be. Oh well.

message 127: by Eliestal (new)

Eliestal | 255 comments I finished my second book!

2016 - A book you haven’t read since high school (this would be a reread): The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman.

I still love this series so much. Seeing Lyra and Will evolve throughtout the book is very interesting. The pacing is really good too in my opinion and keeps you on your toes at all time.

I chose it solely on the author's name and the fact that I could download the ebook from my library. It was really fun though, and now I want to read the sequel.

message 135: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Blue Labyrinth for 2018 - a book with two authors.

Although this book is Pendergast #14, it is actually my 16th book of this series for the year. I am so glad that my library hold on the audio book came free for me to download it and have a "spot" on the toppler. I have already read the next two series books, so I will be reading book #17 next.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments Finished 2015 A book with antonyms in the title Glory O'Brien's History of the Future .

2017 about an immigrant or refugee A Commonwealth of Thieves: Improbable Birth of Australia. The custodians, most often, were worse than the condemned.

2018 A past Goodreads Choice Awards winner Eleanor & Park. Heartbreaking!

message 142: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Finished 2017-A book from a non-human perspective. I read Woof. The book is from the point of view of a dog, Bowser. Bowser seemed pretty smart at the beginning of the book, though he seemed to get a lot ditzier as the book went on. But he saved his human, 11 year-old Birdie, on at least three occasions by attacking the bad guys who wanted to hurt her. It was fun.

message 143: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments Finished The Poisoned Crown for 2016 translated into English.
So historically exact in places and overly dramatic in others. I'm just loving this series.

message 144: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I finished Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie for 2015 - a book written by an author with your same initials. My initials are also JMB.

I wasn't enchanted with this book and gave it only 2 stars. I know times were different, but some of the themes were a bit dark for children. I much preferred the Disney animated movie.

message 145: by Lanelle (last edited Oct 12, 2018 07:47PM) (new)

Lanelle | 4020 comments I finished listening to Northanger Abbey for 2016 - a book at least 100 years older than you.

I think that's the 3rd or 4th time I've read this delightful story. It's one of my favorite Jane Austen books. I wonder if there are any fanfic stories of this work.

message 146: by Vicki (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading The Poisonwood Bible for 2015 - a book with more than 500 pages.

I am so glad I finally got it done and can add it to my yearly challenge task.

It was an awesome story. I really loved the way it was told in each character's own unique voice/POV. It is an amazing story and really made me think about our "civilized" views about Africa and what they need vs what they get/got.
There were times that I really felt bad about being an American, knowing what our government did after the Belgians pulled out in 1960.
