Two novellas titled by the name of the main character in each. Both stories are written in the first person coming at the reader with an “in your face” style of writing: “That shut you up.” And “Come at me, losers.” And “Get comfortable and have a seat.” And “I’m warning you I’m going to finish this story.” And how about this: “ ‘That which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger’ is complete crap. That which doesn’t kill you, doesn’t kill you. Period.”
Both stories are about young people, mid-twenties or so, one a man (we know he’s 27) and one a woman. Both drink excessively and have plenty of casual relationships with the opposite sex but both are adrift, disillusioned, in crappy jobs. They lack ambition and any sense of purpose. In both stories the two experience dramatic changes in their lives.
In Mathilde, the woman works a scam job for her brother-in-law. She invents dozens of fake email names and trashes web sites with comments so he can then entice that business into hiring him to improve their web sites. Then she writes dozens of fake emails praising the new site. She has two female roommates who are twins and have their acts together, so she feels like a loser compared with them.
We know her basic story from the blurbs, so I’m not giving away any plot: Scatterbrain that she is, she loses her purse with thousands of dollars of her roommates’ money in a café. A young man finds it and returns it to her, intact. This is such a dramatic shift in what she expects from life that she falls in love with him. And we are led to believe this despite her initial take on him as strange, ugly, overweight and non-communicative.
We learn a bit more about how the young man, Yann, grew up. He describes himself as
“An early 21st-century young man, born in a wealthy country and raised by loving parents, a little boy who had everything: kisses, hugs, birthday parties, video games systems, plenty of familiarity with the multimedia library, visits from the tooth fairy, Harry Potter books, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and magic cards, hamsters, replacement hamsters, unlimited packages, trips to England, trendy sweats, and all the rest, but not only that. … A little boy born at the end the very end of the 20th century, who has been told since he was old enough to throw his own candy wrappers in the wastebasket that nature is suffering because of him, that the forests are disappearing for the sake of the palm oil… "[and on, a long list of environmental damage]
The man’s story is also about how his life changes. He meets a neighboring couple with two kids. After just one drunken night he almost falls in love with the woman. The older man takes him under his wing during one long night and teaches him about life. The young man sees a new world in front of him.
Despite all the modernism of the author’s style and stories, it’s ironic that the woman’s story is about her relationship with a man, and the man’s story is about his career. Still, both are good stories that held my attention and I enjoyed the author’s refreshing style of writing. I also enjoyed and reviewed another short novel by her, Someone I Loved. GR tells us that the author has sold millions of copies of her 4-or-so books in France and in translation.

Story One – Mathilde
Imagine spending a warm, lazy, sunny afternoon sipping on a mojito. Or two. Watching the world go by, in Paris. Imagine then heading home and realizing that you’d left your bag behind at the café. But not just any bag. The one filled with precious mementoes that cannot be replaced. Photos and knickknacks, lucky charms, your pretty makeup bag, your new Dior mascara, your phone, a very private letter and…10,000 Euros worth of cold hard cash.
Panic stations. Cold sweat. Instant sobriety. Even Saint Anthony of Padua would have a hard time helping with this one.
”I cried all the way across Paris. I cried for me life.”
Mathilde is a twenty four year old art student who didn’t complete her studies. Lured by the easy dollars her brother in law offered her to write bogus reviews of websites to increase his own company’s customer base, she didn’t return to complete her degree.
Though still so young, Mathilde has already found the world to be quite a harsh place. Never having healed from the loss of her mother at nineteen, going from casual hookup to hopeless relationship, the bag represented not just the money she’d lost, but her hopes and dreams for a happier life.
This is her moment of existential crisis.
”…and this emptiness, and this nothing, and this lack of anything, of everything, everywhere, all the time…”
The letter in Mathilde’s bag is one serious ooze of sensuality. No wonder she didn’t want prying eyes to read it. Let alone a strange man’s prying eyes. For indeed a man has found her bag, a mysterious chef by the name of Jean-Baptiste. They meet for a brief moment when he returns the bag to her, completely intact, and from that moment, Mathilde is obsessed with finding him again.
How does it end? Will Mathilde find the love she is yearning for in Jean-Baptiste’s arms? Or will it end in a very different way? A case of be careful what you wish for. I like to think it’s a happy ending (pardon the pun), kinky as it may be, rather than the one which is hinted at. It could go either way. Hmmmm…it’s very much left up to the reader’s imagination.
Story Two – Yann
The river Seine calls Yann after he finishes another soul destroying day at work. About to turn twenty seven, he's at the precipice of no longer considering himself to be young, and is already feeling tired and jaded.
"...the Seine is ink-black, slow and sluggish...on the hunt, stalking the weary, the exhausted employees, the talented little dreamers and the people who question themselves in the night...Come on, it murmurs."
Yann is a twenty seven year old university graduate. Nice looking, with a good job as a sales rep, polite. Too polite. And from the time he was a young lad, made to feel guilty for being born a white, European male, with all the privilege that supposedly entails, what with global over population, not to mention water and fuel shortages, amongst others.
"You're young, you're European, and you're a nice guy? You're in for a hell of a rough time, my friend."
Yann's life is at an impasse. He knows in his gut that he is going through the motions with his girlfriend Mèlanie, and that his job is starving his creative spirit.
A chance encounter on the stairs between Yann and his neighbours, Isaac and Alice, and their two young daughters, ends up in an invitation to dinner at their flat. He accepts, as Mèlanie is away at a work function.
Sharing a meal with them, opens Yann's eyes to what is important. How a home should feel. How love should be. Not grand gestures or status symbols, but in every single thought and glance. That each moment is special, no matter how ordinary.
"The cat's dish full of fish-shaped kibble and the cat itself winding between my ankles."
As the evening progresses, the vino and conversation flows. Isaac makes observations about Yann which he previously didn't dare admit even to himself. He looks deep into his soul. He realises what he has to do.
Now the ending of this story is utterly clear, and made my heart fly. It is beautiful. Suffice to say, there is a vineyard...
These two short stories about Mathilde and Yann are told in the first person, make up this delightful novella by Anna Gravalda. I stumbled upon it accidentally. Sometimes the book gods/goddesses send you what you need to read at the time. As with most of the novels I’ve read by French Writers, this one also has that wonderful mix of a quirky twist, the esoteric and existential, with a hint of romance floating through the pages. Plenty of pathos, but with the hope things can change. If you believe they can. Utterly and completely charming.

I read this book in just over an hour, it's a very quick read. It's actually two novellas, and I have to say that they were the most uplifting works of fiction I've read in a long time. It would be pretty hard to read them and not feel good afterwards. So, if you need cheering up, give this book a try. Definitely recommended.

آن ها در می یابند که زندگی همین است و اگر روزی زندگی طعمش را از دست داد، می توان دست را در جیب کرد و کیفی را روی دوش انداخت و رهسپار راهی جدید شد. انتظار کشیدن و گفتن"فردا روز دیگری است" را فراموش کنید، نفس عمیقی بکشید و در را محکم پشت سرتان ببندید..

This was a very short book but with a very beautiful message in it. I love how Anna Gavalda always manages to capture everyday life perfectly and writes stories that appeal to everyone - no matter your age or life experience. This book was no exception.
What I loved the most about this novel was the writing. It contains some very true and thought-provoking sentences that made me stop for a bit and think. The sentences combined make a very honest story about life and choices we make, and how life is not always miserable and filled with bad consequences. Sometimes life is good and little things can make you make life-changing decisions - maybe for the better, who knows?
Anna Gavalda also depicts the two narrator voices beautifully because you can sense the different personalities behind both voices - they are not at all the same person and they don't sound like the same person even though it's the same author who's behind both narratives. The writing style also changes which I found admirable - it suited the situation.
All in all a very interesting book on life which, I dare say, will appeal to everyone - so read it :)

آنا گاوالدا نویسنده ای است که به مسائل از دیدگاه متفاوتی می نگرد و همین ویژگی اوست که مرا مجذوب نوشته هایش کرده است به اضافه سادگی و روانی نوشته هایش.
کتاب زندگی بهتر شامل دو داستان بلند است. یکی در مورد دختری به نام ماتیلد و دیگری پسری به نام یان. هر دو جوان هستند. جوانان امروزی که زندگی شان را شبکه های اجتماعی، اینترنت، کار و مسائلی در بر گرفته که در آن خیلی چیزها یا وجود ندارد و یا به فراموشی سپرده شده است مانند انسانیت.
ماتیلد روزی کیفش را در یک کافه جا می گذارد... 10000 یورو در کیفش بود که امانتی دوستانش بود. شخصی که کیف را برداشته بود کیف را به او بر می گرداند. ملاقات با این شخص و اتفاقاتی که می افتد باعث می شود ماتیلد مسیر زندگی اش را عوض کند.
یان، یک روز در راه پله ساختمان به یک بوفه که راهش را بسته بود برخورد می کند و به صاحبان بوفه که آن ها را نمی شناسد کمک می کند تا آن را به داخل خانه ببرند و تا بعد از نیمه شب در خانه آن ها می ماند و با صاحب خانه می نوشند و می گویند و می خندند و روز بعد مسیر زندگی اش را تغییر می دهد.

După „Billie”, de la aceeași autoare, căreia (din câte îmi aduc aminte), i-am dat 5 steluțe, Anna Gavalda mă dezamăgește, din păcate, cu această carte. Nu mă așteptam. Recunosc, a avut părți drăguțe, nicidecum frumoase, dar i-au lipsit multe. Plus că, de altfel, am citit cartea și încă nu mi-am dat seama „care-i faza, nene?”. Hai 2,5, dar mai mult în niciun caz!

3,5. La sensación cuando la estás leyendo y la terminas es de cinco estrellas. Quiero decir que es una de esas novelas que durante la lectura disfrutas muchísimo. Y sobre lo de que es una novela... diría que son dos relatos unidos en un libro. Porque los protagonistas no coinciden, sino que cada uno cuenta su historia. Primero una y después la otra. Tiene un poco de todo: un poco de humor, reflexión sobre las generaciones atrapadas en una vida que tampoco controlan, amor, crítica social. Y todo con ese tono tan tan francés. Me ha sorprendido la sensación de velocidad mientras leía y es cierto que se lee en dos ratos.
Recomendadísima, sobre todo cuando necesitas leer algo "bonito", algo de esa literatura "feel good" (creo que la llaman).

En realidad 3.5 estrellas. He descubierto a una autora maravillosa, con una prosa fresca y desenfadada que me ha hecho reír a carcajadas con dos historias muy diferentes.

این کتاب شامل دو تا داستان میشه که هیچکدوم جذابیت خاصی نداشت و با دو کتاب دیگه ای که از گاوالدا خونده بودم کاملن فرق میکرد.ضمن اینکه ترجمه افتضاحی داشت و انگار حتی یک دور هم روخوانی نشده بود

Sunt acolo, stau pe rafturile bibliotecii așteptându-și cuminți rândul, până când, într-o zi, brusc ți se duce mâna exact spre ele, după care ajung să vindece părți importante din tine, te seduc, te vrăjesc, te țin acolo prinsă de poveste fără puterea de a i te pune. Acesta este cazul pentru O viață mai bună de Anna Gavalda, care a stat ani buni în biblioteca mea și pe care nu m-am îndurat să o dau laoparte de-a lungul anilor, sperând că, într-o zi, voi ajunge la ea.
Și bine am făcut că am citit-o abia acum, pentru că poveștile prinse în paginile sale au nevoie de o anumită maturitate pentru a fi înțelese și pentru a ți se cuibări cu putere în suflet. Sunt aproape sigură că nu i-aș fi gustat dulceața dacă aș fi citit-o pe când eram mai tânără, dar acum m-am regăsit în ambele personaje, având la rândul meu sentimentul că viața a trecut mult prea repede pe lângă mine, acela al ratării, al neîmplinirii, căci despre asta este totul în romanul scriitoarei franceze.
O viața mai bună este o lectură extrem de profundă, mult mai plină de sens și de semnificații decât pare la prima vedere. Nu este genul acela de carte drăguță, cu o poveste ușurică, ci una care te zguduie din temelii, aducând în fața ta o adevărată estetică a urâtului care se transformă într-o variantă mai bună prin iubire, perseverență și ieșirea din zona de confort.
Începe încetișor, parcă ademenindu-te în lumea sa. Te duce cu zăhărelul și îți lasă impresia că nu este mare lucru de capul ei, că este un fel de chicklit despre niște tineri zvăpăiați, prea prinși de lumea online sau de existența lor măruntă pentru a te mai surprinde cu ceva. Și cât de tare te poți înșela punându-i această etichetă. Anna Gavalda te învăluie, te face să crezi că totul este urât, asemeni lui Jean Baptiste, bărbatul gras, fără niște degete, care găsește geanta lui Mathilde, sau a lui Alice, tânăra frivolă care ademenește bărbați, dar lucrurile sunt mult mai profunde dincolo de aparențe, iar autoarea te seduce, mergând la sigur direct în suflet.
Avem două povești absolut independente dacă am citi numai la suprafață, însă legate prin sentimentul acut al ratării, al eșecului, al durerii de a nu fi făcut nimic important în viață, de a te fi pierdut pe tine însuți undeva pe parcurs, ca și cum nu ai mai conta pentru nimeni, nici măcar pentru tine.
Povestea lui Mathilde mi-a plăcut mai tare decât cea a lui Yann, dar împreună formează un întreg, unul plin de esență și de căldura discuțiilor acelora cu prietenii, care te schimbă pentru totdeauna. Mathilde este o tânără de douăzeci și patru de ani, care locuiește în Paris alături de două tinere total opusul ei. A renunțat la studiile masterale și lucrează pentru cumnatul ei, fabricând comentarii pe internet. Are o viață măruntă, nesemnificativă, iar ea pare a se arunca în vicii pentru a uita că nu este acolo unde și-ar fi dorit să fie. Asta până când pierde o geantă ce cuprinde la interior 10.000 de euro care nu îi aparțin. Aici intră în scenă Jean Baptiste, un bărbat deloc atrăgător, care îi returnează totul intact. Mai puțin o scrisoare cu tente erotice pe care e clar că a citit-o. Deși inițial el nu îi face nicio plăcere tinerei, el ajunge obiectul obsesiei ei, ba chiar acel element care o face să se simtă vie din nou și dornică de viața, cel care îi oferă un țel, pentru că acum ea nu face nimic altceva decât să îl caute pe el.
La rândul său, Yann este un tânăr de douăzeci și șase de ani. Are o slujbă măruntă, care nu îl mulțumește, are o iubită mai mult absentă, trăiește în casa acesteia, apartamentul unei mătuși bătrâne a acesteia, iar existența lui se desfășoară pe repede înainte, destul de robotic și de plictisitor. Însă totul se schimbă în momentul în care este invitat în casa unui vecin de bloc pe care l-a ajutat să care un dulap. Simte o căldură și o viață care i-au fost străine mai înainte, iar existența lui Alice, soția vecinului, îi dă cu totul viața peste cap, pentru că îl face să se întrebe care este cu adevărat scopul vieții și îl forțează să își analizeze cu atenție viața anostă.
Cartea asta m-a atins în cele mai adânci locuri ale sufletului meu. Este ca și cum Cupidon ar fi acționat cu arcul său cu săgeți și m-ar fi nimerit direct în centrul ființei mele. Un lucru e cert, cartea asta te vrăjește, te cuprinde sub efectele magiei sale și te face să te îndrăgostești în mod iremediabil de ea.
Este o operă postmodernă, în care personajele naratoare ajung să poarte un dialog direct cu cititorii. Ușor bizară pe alocuri, este pur și simplu minunată, o meditație profundă pe tema morții și a vieții, o întreagă metaforă menită să te determine să te întorci spre tine, alegând, asemeni lui Mathilde sau Yann, o viață mai bună, una în care să te trezești din amorțeala în care ai picat pentru prea mult timp și să începi să fii din nou participant activ în propria viață, iar nu doar un simplu spectator pasiv. Revii la lista cu visuri și speranțe pe care le-ai pus pe hold, te scuturi de tot ceea ce ai strâns urât și nu mai alergi după himerele lumii moderne, ci, la fel ca Mathilde sau Yann, începi lupta cu tine și iei viața în piept.
Obsesia joacă un rol important în descoperirea de sine aici. Jean Baptiste, care nu o mai sună pe Mathilde, devine rațiunea ei de a fi, acel lucru care o aduce din nou la viață. Alice, tânăra ușor frivolă care pleacă la culcare, devine rațiunea de a fi a lui Yann, care înțelege că viața lui nu este pe făgașul care trebuie. Însă acestea sunt cele care pun în mișcare motorul vieții, care îi determină să iasă din coconul care s-a cristalizat de la prea mult stat pe loc, sa se scuture de praful propriei vieți și să iasă afară, să se plimbe prin Parisul plin cu străduțe minunate, cu pitorescul clădirilor și cu atmosfera boemă. Nu mai sunt pe pilot automat, ci acum ajung să trăiască cu adevărat.
O viața mai bună este un roman absolut magic, care nu te ademenește prin ceea ce este aparent, căci, la bază, totul este urât, viață nu este așa cum trebuie pentru cele două personaje, ci prin ceea ce ar putea fi, prin modul în care poți să îți transformi eșecurile și ratarea și să le faci să te determine să devii cea mai bună versiune a ta. O carte vie, sublimă, desăvârșită tocmai prin imperfecțiunile pe care le scoate la suprafață.

I would like to say THANK YOU for Anna Gavalda! For looking so deep and so real into todays youths' situation. Especially with Yann's story. It bites into my flesh. Oh yes, Wouf-Houf.
I was taking notes on a piece of paper with my favorite quotes and was just wondering what my future children will think when they find the book with the paper? Will they know I was exactly twenty seven? And will they understand how it felt to look into this (not so) distorted mirror? How will their mirror look like?
Three thing I have learned for true:
1. My own nest should be me.
2. Happiness, this sly sneaker only makes sound when it flees.
3. Only details count, the rest is worth nothing...
So let's go find the details of this book yourself... You will not regret. Or if you do is because you have recognized yourself...

این کتاب متشکل از دو داستان مجزا هست، داستان زندگی ماتیلد و یآن که هر کدوم سبک و تفکر خاص خودشون رو دارن.
نسبت به سایر کارهای گاوالدا زیاد کتاب چشم گیری نیست.
البته من نسخه فارسی رو با نام زندگی بهتر خوندم با ترجمه شهرزاد سلحشور از انتشارات قطره.

For once, I managed to focus on an audio book that's not non-fiction! Success! Perhaps because it's in French and demanded more focus. At times, I wished I had read this... as a normal book, because there were a certain amount of words I would have liked to look up (French reviewers comment upon the "Parisianness" of the language, it seems), but at the same time, the narrators are just about the best ever. I have never listened to an audio book that is so extremely well narrated. At first I was blown away by the female narrator (Lola Naymark) who narrates the first half of the book, thinking that wow, she's a genius! Then the second part starts, with a male narrator (Audible doesn't list his name...?), and he's just as good! Dammit, France, please teach the rest of the world how to narrate books.
So, this is a book in two parts, with two unrelated characters whose lives pretty much suck. Something happens to them, and they make a change. That's the idea of the book, and it works. It never gets boring. I wasn't exactly overflowing with sympathy for what's-her-name in the beginning, but she grew on me, and I accepted her in the end. Yann, on the other hand, Yann, he puts all my thoughts into brilliantly formulated sentences. I'm hardly the only one who feels like this. I think anyone in their late 20's with a brain, with the realization of what a general disappointment life is dawning upon them, will fall in love with Yann. I would quote him to death if this weren't an audio book.
If only for Yann, and for the tape he records for Mélanie at the end, I would recommend you (=anyone) read this book. It's not 5 star worthy, it's not absolutely awesome in any way, but it contains enough brilliance to be worth a couple of hours of your time. And you may feel less lonely.

I thoroughly enjoyed both these stories. And, while one of these stars is for the translator (this was perfectly seamless), that doesn't at all diminish my admiration for the author and her obvious talent and skillful storytelling.

Ni déçue ni impressionnée
deux histoires complètement différentes qui me donnent l'impression qu'il s'agit de betterfly effect
malheureusement racontées avec un langage parlé ( d'ados ) presque désagréable , voire même vulgaire à mon goût par moments
Ces deux histoires dépeignent des jeunes adultes qui, bien qu'ils soient différents, se trouvent à des moments clés de leur existence, cherchant un sens à leur vie et à se détacher d'une certaine routine ou de leur mal-être.
La première histoire : Mathilde
Elle met en scène Mathilde, une jeune femme de 24 ans qui a abandonné ses études et travaille pour son beau-frère.
La perte inattendue de son sac à main dans un café et sa rencontre avec l'homme qui le lui rend vont déclencher une remise en question profonde et d'un changement dans sa vie.
La deuxième histoire : Yann
Elle se concentre sur Yann, un jeune homme de 26 ans, très diplômé, mais qui n'a pas trouvé de travail à la hauteur de ses qualifications. Il est vendeur et se sent insatisfait de son existence.
Sa rencontre fortuite avec son voisin, qui lui rend service en l'aidant à monter un meuble, va le pousser à explorer de nouveaux horizons et à prendre des décisions radicales pour transformer sa vie.
"La Vie en Mieux" explore les thèmes de la quête de sens, de l'insatisfaction et de la possibilité de changer de cap pour trouver une meilleure version de soi-même.
c'est une belle illustration de la manière dont des événements apparemment anodins peuvent déclencher de grands changements dans nos vies et nous pousser à prendre des décisions courageuses pour notre propre bien-être.
C'est un livre qui résonne avec l'idée que, même perdus, nous avons toujours la possibilité de réinventer notre existence pour la rendre "meilleure".
je suis peut-être vieux jeu mais j'aurais préféré lire ces deux histoires dans un langage plus raffiné.

Na Annu Gavaldu a jej Lepsi zivot som sa tesila vyse roka, pretoze z anotacie som mala pocit, ze je to pribeh stvoreny pre mna. Bohuzial, neviem ci som sa tesila tak velmi, ze ma potom sklamalo uplne vsetko. Styl autorkinho pisania bol otravny, dej plytky, hlavana postava na nevydrzanie,.. Kniha sa sklada z 2 pribehov. Z toho prveho som bola otravena a zmatena, znechutena a aj znudena. Podla inych recenzii je prave druhy pribeh skvely. Ja som mu uz sanca nedala a tak sa mi po dlhej dobe stalo, ze som knihu nedokazala docitat.

Me gusta más la historia de Yann, la de Mathilde es un poco obsesiva. De todos modos, no es de lo que más me ha gustado de Gavalda. Me gusta más cuando escribe más largo.

Paura di fare rumore, paura di essere felici, paura di disturbare i vicini e di bestemmiare tutti gli accidentacci che si hanno sul cuore."
Due racconti; nel primo Mathilde, 24 anni e una vita fatta di feste, mojitos, un appartamento condiviso con due gemelle che sopporta a fatica. Le sue priorità e prospettive verranno bruscamente ribaltate da un incontro inaspettato, dopo aver distrattamente smarrito una borsa contenente diecimila euro.
Nel secondo Yann, ventiseienne intrappolato in una vita che non gli assomiglia, almeno finchè non incontra una famiglia che lo colpisce al cuore e che lo aiuterà a capire come poter essere finalmente se stesso.
Cosa dire di questo libro; non ho amato affatto la prima storia, che ho trovato piuttosto sgradevole e insignificante.
Ho apprezzato invece la seconda, che potrebbe essere descritta come una vera e propria storia di formazione, e in cui i personaggi sono pittoreschi e ben descritti.
In entrambi i casi ho avuto la sensazione che qualcosa in questo romanzo riportasse ad autori giapponesi come la Yoshimoto o Murakami...che ti lasciano (almeno a me) sempre un sentore di incompiuto, di poco chiaro, di distante, di impersonale.
Non ho amato la scrittura della Gavalda; l'ho trovata confusa, sopra le righe, confusionaria. Ho dovuto rileggere vari passaggi e ho perso il filo diverse volte, soprattutto nel primo racconto.
Ne ho apprezzato l'ironia e il fatto che le storie siano ambientate entrambe a Parigi, di cui si ha un affresco contemporaneo azzeccato, visto che la scrittrice vi è nata e ci vive tuttora.
Non l'ho trovata una lettura appassionante e ho faticato a finire il libro nonostante fosse piuttosto breve, ma è apprezzabile ed interessante lo spunto di riflessione che ci offre l'autrice, ricordandoci quanto spesso ci si ritrovi ingabbiati in una realtà che non ci rispecchia e non ci soddisfa, che ci rende vittime inconsapevoli di dinamiche quotidiane e di aspettative altrui, di meccanismi d'obbligo nella società e nelle città moderne.
E ci ricorda quanto può essere più semplice del previsto liberarsene.

Due racconti; nel primo Mathilde, 24 anni e una vita fatta di feste, mojitos, un appartamento condiviso con due gemelle che sopporta a fatica. Le sue priorità e prospettive verranno bruscamente ribaltate da un incontro inaspettato, dopo aver distrattamente smarrito una borsa contenente diecimila euro.
Nel secondo Yann, ventiseienne intrappolato in una vita che non gli assomiglia, almeno finchè non incontra una famiglia che lo colpisce al cuore e che lo aiuterà a capire come poter essere finalmente se stesso.
Cosa dire di questo libro; non ho amato affatto la prima storia, che ho trovato piuttosto sgradevole e insignificante.
Ho apprezzato invece la seconda, che potrebbe essere descritta come una vera e propria storia di formazione, e in cui i personaggi sono pittoreschi e ben descritti.
In entrambi i casi ho avuto la sensazione che qualcosa in questo romanzo riportasse ad autori giapponesi come la Yoshimoto o Murakami...che ti lasciano (almeno a me) sempre un sentore di incompiuto, di poco chiaro, di distante, di impersonale.
Non ho amato la scrittura della Gavalda; l'ho trovata confusa, sopra le righe, confusionaria. Ho dovuto rileggere vari passaggi e ho perso il filo diverse volte, soprattutto nel primo racconto.
Ne ho apprezzato l'ironia e il fatto che le storie siano ambientate entrambe a Parigi, di cui si ha un affresco contemporaneo azzeccato, visto che la scrittrice vi è nata e ci vive tuttora.
Non l'ho trovata una lettura appassionante e ho faticato a finire il libro nonostante fosse piuttosto breve, ma è apprezzabile ed interessante lo spunto di riflessione che ci offre l'autrice, ricordandoci quanto spesso ci si ritrovi ingabbiati in una realtà che non ci rispecchia e non ci soddisfa, che ci rende vittime inconsapevoli di dinamiche quotidiane e di aspettative altrui, di meccanismi d'obbligo nella società e nelle città moderne.
E ci ricorda quanto può essere più semplice del previsto liberarsene.

Az élethez bátorság kell. Ahhoz meg főleg, hogy beismerjük, hogy nyomorultak vagyunk. Mert azok vagyunk, egytől-egyig. Akár bevalljuk, akár nem. De ne is álmodjunk boldogságról, ha nem éljük meg ezt a nyomort a földön fetrengve, kapálódzva. Az igazság fájdalmas, hazugságban élni viszont nem érdemes.
Gratulálok Gavaldának, hogy az Együtt lehetnénk szirupos, álszenvedős története után sikerült valami igazit írnia. Olyan egyszerű szavakkal, hogy az döbbenet.
Gyáva és gyenge voltam hozzá, hogy végigzokogjam Mathilde történetét, pedig jó lett volna, és az együttérzésen túl félig örömkönnyek lettek volna ezek, hogy nem vagyok/voltam egyedül, hogy más pont ugyanezt érzi, és hogy más ezt le is tudja írni.
Elkerülhetjük a szembesítést: nem kell szépirodalmat olvasni, nem kell szeretni, nem kell ötöst adni neki, de attól még igaz. Nyomorultak vagyunk mindannyian, így vagy úgy.
Fájt, de jó volt, hogy fájt, mert a fájdalom az mindig igaz.

I enjoyed the rhythm of the stories and the way they connected to daily life. A new and very likeable author for me. I'll be on the lookout for more of her works. Bought as a present for a friend, but sneakily read before delivering it :)

Gavalda uses words to paint a picture that is nothing short of amazing. A picture of feelings, thoughts, desires, doubts, laughs, could-have-beens and desperations. I feel slightly more complete and content as a person after reading this one.
