Panalopy | 2 comments I think I read these sometime in the 90's, possibly earlier. The main character was a guy who fixes other peoples problems and might be a hitman. His mother was killed when someone thew a large rock off an overpass onto the car the family was driving. It landed in his mother's lap and she died. I seem to remember he lived in a booby trapped apartment building. I think there were at least three books and in the later books I think demons or monsters somehow came into the picture. I would love to read these again if I could find them. Thanks!

Aerulan | 1317 comments This is absolutely the Repairman Jack books that start with The Tomb by F. Paul Wilson.

ETA I'm not positive which book his mother being killed with the rock(think it might actually have been a cinderblock) thrown off the overpass was first mentioned and some of the books have a heavier supernatural element than others, though it builds as the series progresses. So check the other books if you don't recognize the first, you might have come in on a different book.

They're fun reads, sometimes they get dark/violent but a lot of his "fix-it" jobs have inventive and entertainingly clever solutions that help to keep them from being too grim even when the bad stuff is going on. Which is pretty vague, but I don't want to spoiler anything.
If they sound like something you might like I definitely recommend giving the series a try.
