YA teenagers live on island, main boy called Luke/Lucas returns in the first chapter?

I can’t remember much about this book apart from it being a series that revolves around a group of teens/young adults.

The main girl falls in love with Luke/Lucas and there’s another girl who is really into the weather (like monitoring it) and I remember there was a car crash (set in a time before the series starts) when someone died and one character had covered it up for another character because they were in love with them.

I’m not 100% sure but I think the girl who was into weather had a little sister and the main girl is best friends with her. I also remember they had to take a ferry/boat to go to school and go shopping.

I can’t remember when exactly I read it but it was between 2000-2006.

Pretty sure this is the Making Out series by Katherine Applegate (also known as Boyfriends/Girlfriends). The first book in the series is Zoey Fools Around

It comes up quite a lot in this group, I think a lot of people remember it fondly!
