The Haunted Mask by R.L. Stine
Pages: 144
Rating: 4 stars
Read: 9/25/18
How it fits: #11 in the series
Review: I missed these books as a child so I am enjoying them now. This one was particularly good and I didn't guess the ending until about 3/4 in. I particularly liked the surprise twist at the end.

Week 2 - Spot 11

Until Proven Guilty by J.A. Jance
How it Fits: J.P. Beaumont #1
Pages: 336
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I had read book #13 in this series many years ago and never really felt all that compelled to go back to the beginning (or move forward either for that matter). I'm not exactly sure what it was that compelled me to acquire this book, but I did and I was excited to pick it up and give it a shot. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. It was somewhat reminiscent of Stuart Woods' Stone Barrington series with how insane the male character gets when a beautiful woman is in the picture ::eyeroll:: But really, I enjoyed this first book in the series and I look forward to continuing on in the future.

Week 2 - Spot 11
Book: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
How it fits: 1st book in the Shades of Magic series
Pages: 400
Rating: Three stars
Date read: 9/27
Review: Disappointing - that pretty much sums this one up for me. It's getting three stars because the writing was fine and I liked the idea of the characters navigating three different planes of London (Red, Black and White). But I just couldn't get invested in the characters. There wasn't really anything too special about Kell the wizard and Delilah Bard the cutpurse - I've seen these two archetypes in other books over and over again. At least in most cases the author managed to make them special in some way. Instead, Kell and Delilah are just ordinary. I'm not sure I'll continue on with this series. I have other, more interesting series to read.

Book: The Orchid Affair
How it fits: Pink Carnation #8
Pages: 401
Date read: 9/30/18
Rating: 4 stars
Review: What I like about the author of this series is her varying styles of writing. You never know if the book you're reading will be straight forward, whimsical or serious. And she somehow is able to pull off each style well.
The Orchid Affair is one of her more serious stories. It is well thought out, and the historical details are integrated cleverly. In other words, you don't realize you're getting a history lesson. Overall, this book is a good addition to the series.

Book: All Systems Red by Martha Wells
How it fits: #1 in the Murderbot Diaries
Date Read: 9/3/18
Pages: 176
Rating: 5 stars
Review: This was a very enjoyable novel. I really appreciated the author's less-is-more approach to the Murderbot's story. It was an interesting take on the cyborg/artificial intelligence sci-fi trope. Because his technology construction contract was given to the lowest bidder, the program that's supposed to control Murderbot's actions was defective, allowing him much more freedom to act and think independently than normal. This is a fact that he religiously tries to conceal from the human research team that he has been contracted to protect.
The ending wasn't quite what I expected but it makes for a nice segway into the next installment of the series. Looking forward to reading more the books.

From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris - 10/02/18
How it Fits: Southern Vampires Mysteries #8
Pages: 359
Rating: 3 stars
Review : Oh Sookie. Your taste in men is so abysmal I almost can't stand it. At least there was some interesting background story in this installment. New family members. Crappy old family members. New roommates. New supernatural wars. Bob is wearing pants again. Lots happening, just not a lot of progress. I suspect the next book will be craziness though.

Review: Verity Long is selling her house to pay for her wedding even though she didn't get married. She accidentally traps a spirit named Frankie on her property. She gets involved a job for her ex-fiancé's brother Ellis whose property is being haunted.
For the most part this was enjoyable. The interactions between Frankie and Verity are funny. I will continue to read this series.

Review: I have a soft spot for the Michael Bennett series. This particular installment was quite fun. It was fast paced and action packed. It started right where the 7th book ended (I'm a stickler for reading series books in order) and it was one wild ride to the end! I definitely recommend this series!

Review : This series continues to thrill me - the fantasy aspects are enchantingly childlike but not childish. Alanna is growing up and her adventures are only starting at the end of this book. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Book: Bag of Bones by Stephen King
How it fits: Author S
pages:756
Finished: 10/8/18
Review: The story is about a 40ish writer who loses his wife and goes to their summer house to stay for a while. He meets a young woman and her child and gets involved in her fight to keep her child from her husband's father who is very rich. Along the way he deals with some ghosts but he is not sure who they are. Is it his wife, Sara or some other entity? I had a hard time stopping listening to this. It is read by Stephen King and he does a great job with it. Some authors cannot read their own work and do it justice but he can.
Hello. I am really working on finishing my book by Friday. I have a good shot too finish it but I think it will probably later during at the day if you don't mind getting a roll later on Friday.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up, in case I go silent for a day or so. Work is kicking me in the fanny this week.
I’m 80 percent through my book and will definitely finish it but it may be closer to 10 EST
