The Road
Shelf: own-it
Read: 10/11/2018
Rating: 3.5
Review:
Beautifully written and grim, 'The Road' focuses on two characters traveling through a dying world in a dead civilization. Ash covers everything, even tainting the sea itself, and nothing pretty remains. It soon becomes clear that the point of the novel isn't to show why the world was destroyed or a reason behind the madness, but the purpose is just existing and why a father holds on to such a limited life. Love may not conquer all in a reality that's destroyed, but it's still a light that radiates a bit of calm and peace.

I haven't seen the movie but may try it sometime. I've heard good things about it.

How it fits: Shelved Time Travel by 10 people
Review: While I'm grateful to these 10 people, I'm also perplexed. I guess they tagged it Time Travel because there's time travel in a previous book? Or because Diana CAN time travel? Nevertheless, shelving issues aside, I loved revisiting these characters. It's great to see the twins' development, and learn about Marcus' past. Harkness does for Historical Fiction what Laura Hillenbrand does for Historical Fact.
And we're getting a Gallowglass book, too!

No worries, I was struggling for time too. Good book, no time.

I thought so, although Goodreads puts it in the same trilogy, rather than a spin-off. It still has the split POVs, where some of it is told by Diana in first person and some is 3rd person. So not really a spin-off. And not really a stand-alone, as it would be frustrating to read if you hadn't already read All Souls. It's a bit like A Court of Frost and Starlight, where the original trilogy is completed, but this is the "what really happened during the HEA".

The Night Mark by Tiffany Reisz
Series: None/Stand Alone
Shelf: Time Travel
Read: 15 Oct
Rating: ✮✮✮½
Review:
“Every lighthouse does double duty by day or by night. The paint job is the day mark. The light pattern is—”The Night Mark is a touching romance taking place in both 2015 and 1921. Faye Barlow has suffered more than one loss in her thirty years. One evening, while exploring an out-of-service lighthouse, she finds herself swept into 1921 facing a man who bears a striking resemblance to her deceased husband. With the help of a new friend, she's able to find love and happiness once again.
“The night mark...”
“To think I spent my whole life believing time only went in one direction,” he said. “Thought it was a river. Turns out it’s an ocean. Waves come in. Waves go out. Sometimes those waves take us with them.”I admit I had a difficult time getting into Faye's story. However, each time I put the book down I found myself thinking about her. I stuck with it and eventually felt the pull to know the whole story and I'm glad I did. While it was a bit different from I'd expected and I'm not a huge fan of time travel, I did enjoy the lighthouse history. This was partly due to the fact that I'd just finished a tour of New England and explored a dozen lighthouses along the East Coast.

Title/Author: The Drafter by Kim Harrison
Series: The Peri Reed Chronicles #1
Date Read: 10/16/2018
Shelf: Time Travel
Pages: 432
Rating: ★★★1/2☆
Review: Peri Reed is a Drafter, rare individual who has the ability to travel back in time for several seconds for a "re-do" and change the outcome of a recent happening... With that she needs an anchor that then scrubs the duplicate timeline in her mind and re-writes the history which includes some time loss, if not she goes MEP (aka "Cra Cra"). Sound somewhat confusing? You bet it is... Peri is a very kick a$$ character with expensive style and clothes along with fighting skills in a tiny package and her moto is that she only "kills people that kill her first..." So she works for Opti, which is a fancy pants agency meddling in corporate and government espionage. This book is set in the future and in Detroit. Peri and her anchor / boyfriend Jack have been partners for 3 years and they have recently stumbled upon a list of dirty agents which includes their names. With Jack's ability to re-write the timeline and scrub Peri's memories back further than just current events, he wipes any wrongdoing and keeps her oblivious to what he and Opti are up to. This turns into a big mess when an opposing agency, the is out to expose Opti for the crooked entity it is and Peri no longer knows who to trust, as she strikes out to investigate and piece back the missing years of her life.
The good - Interesting book and storyline idea. Liked the spy like action and mystery of who Peri really is and the supporting characters Silas, Howard, Alan and Taf. The bad - had a problem with this tough heroine being such a victim to her abilities, seemed almost like a curse. She was at the mercy of several anchors, and the damage they were able to do to her was very frustrating IMO. If they didn't like her reaction, they just wiped her memories further back with the next draft. Jerks!!
If you are feeling somewhat sentimental, this is nothing remotely like the Hollows, but still has legs of its own. Recently KH wrote a free short story where all her characters meet up and chat about the new characters. Very cute.

Think I've got us all caught up to date... Hope this week's shelf is a good one!!! I've gotta a couple books I hope to work into it. Fingers crossed.
Every time I see anything about a light house I think of Experiment in Terror series, by Karina Halle. Creepy. And now there's a ghost show advertising a light house. ''Tis the spooky season...

Loved Halle’s EIT! Definitely something I thought about when we saw those lighthouses :D
Happy shelf day!

So I saw a side list of post apocalyptic mc books, hmmm. Found

Brief review:
As good as I remembered the first time years ago. Now I need to revisit the movie too, which I enjoyed. The main character, Norman, for some reason is a winning character to be in the head of. There's just something likable about the guy, but then again the same could be said for all the major players. The mystery is a clever one and the claustrophobic sea environment compliments.

I don't read them either... good luck.
Stamp has been requested.

I completely forgot that existed. Do you guys mind if I use that this round?

Ya know, I'd think I'd like this genre b/c I loved Sons of Anarchy, but I'm just not interested in reading any of the books I've seen featuring MCs. Hopefully I'll like this one. I've never read anything by Zanetti before, but I know many like her books.

How it fits: Shelved Motorcycle Club by 83 people
Review: Admittedly, this is not a category of book that I'm really familiar with. I've seen comments about the typical treatment of women in these types of books. But this one wasn't like that. Dex is a bit of an ass, but he freely admits it and tells her to call him on it. And he's so sweetly protective of Iris. It almost made me want to hop on the back of a motorcycle. Almost.
Mariana Zapata continues to hold the title "Queen of the slow-burn romance" in my mind. I love her romances!
ETA: Well, maybe Princess of the slow- burn romance. After all, Anne Bishop took 5 books wth Meg & Simon and only gave us (view spoiler) :)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

How it Fits: Alternate Book, First in a Series
Review: Very good and gripping, hard to put down. Genuinely disturbing - a theme that could have been cheesy but wasn't. Depressing losses but I liked the bond between the friends, the ambience of the woods and legend. Keene writes great horror with a talented hand.

Title/Author: Defiance by Stephanie Tyler
Series: Defiance #1
Date Read: 10/21/2018
Shelf: Motorcycle Club
Pages: 300
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Review: This was a post-apocalyptic book that follows the Defiance motorcycle club post-chaos which was a massive hybrid storm that killed millions and threw the world into darkness. This MC just happened to be run by a gang that were ex-military doomsday preppers and had built an underground labyrinth of survival pods. This book was very dark and very violent especially towards the MCs treatment and value of women. It follows Tru, who left the MC before the storms hit when her father, the lead enforcer tried to rape her. She returns a beaten mess from the actions of another MC gang, to her childhood crush which is the MCs bad boy and leader's bastard Casper who is now the enforcer she wants to claim her over the MC leaders son. Because women are basically property in this MC with a hierarchy of them being valued and children born to the MC, so they have potential to be "old ladies" the rest are pretty much passed around. With Casper and Tru reconnecting, you have a lot of political unrest and other MC gang related issues. Basically tension of the current leader and his sons vs Casper and his supporters.
If there is enough romantic tension, dramatic conflict and sexual tension, I've been known to read several other types of books from aliens to rock stars. This motorcycle club book just didn't click enough buttons for me to probably continue, even though I liked some of the supporting characters, not compelled enough to grab #2 at this point.

PS: I really liked Zanetti's writing and the start to this spin-off. So, I plan to continue this series, as well as doubling back to Dark Protectors and maybe checking out her apocalypse series, as suggested. :)

Wicked Ride by Rebecca Zanetti
Series: Realm Enforcers #1
Shelf: Motorcycle Club
Read: 21 Oct
Rating: ✮✮✮✮☆
Review:
Wicked Ride is the first installment in Zanetti's Dark Protectors same world/spin-off. And, since I jumped ahead and haven't read Dark Protectors, I can tell you that I wasn't lost and didn't feel like I'd missed something by starting this first. I do, however, plan to double back and read that series to see what I've missed as well as continue on with this one. I'm not typically drawn to the motorcycle club genre, but because of Zanetti's paranormal theme this felt more like immortals who happen to ride motorcycles and deal with a club or two periodically rather than majority focus on the MC. It worked for me.
“... she stole his heart. Her fierceness aroused him, and her intellect intrigued him. But that sweetness in such a warrior? Yeah. That owned him.Detective Alexandra (Lex) Monzelle and Kellach (Kell) Dunne are both on the hunt for a new drug that's hit the streets of Seattle. She's a detective whose childhood was affected by drugs and he's an immortal witch from Ireland, undercover in a Seattle MC, trying to track down the drug's manufacturer before it reaches his home and stop it from killing more witches.
I really liked Lex's strength (both inner and outer); these types of heroines always make for a great matchup against a possessive hero. I enjoyed the romance between Lex and Kell. I'm anxious to learn more about him, his family, the vamps and demons, as well as the war (which I'm assuming happens in Dark Protectors). Plus, I'm so curious about this (view spoiler) ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Woohoo :D

Yay! I thought you would!! The Dark Protector series start wasn't my fav but it gets better and sucks you in... Lucky for you, the series is complete. Just think Jason Momoa as Talen. Zanetti's pretty fun on FB too with her Talen Thursday posts and other fun posts.
