John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5194 comments Haaa, glad you did this, was thinking about starting a thread myself as "quick burns" is not the place for lengthier discussion.

Anyhoo, apologies to Trike, but I like how the geek community watches out for their own. Been in a crappy Superman movie? Brandon Routh, you can now be The Atom. It's not the same as a movie franchise, but we're there for you.

Cavill, your movie wasn't quite as bad but you seem typecast as well. Perhaps it was the "Martha" thing. For you, The Witcher.

It's a reward for letting Tom Cruise beat you up... and the seventies moustache showed he is willing to look daft.

Rekka (rekka-jay) You all made me so happy with this. I see a lot of people happy about this casting but since his metoo comments I’ve washed my hands of him.

Apparently Cavill wants to be to Geralt as Reynolds was to Deadpool. Problem is: Reynolds was perfect casting for Deadpool (my husband called it a decade before it finally happened - we don’t count the first time)

How did a casting director see the Mass Mikkelsen photoshoot and not slam a gavel on it?

John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1903 comments Wow, that wig looks like it came from "Kids in the Hall". And I really hope those are not the final effects shots.

I guess we've gotten spoiled with great production value on even low budget genre series. This looks more like how it was done in the late 90's early 2000's. I hope the writing, acting and plot do better.

Trike | 11196 comments John (Nevets) wrote: "I hope the writing, acting and plot do better."

Have you seen Cavill in movies? In Mission: Impossible he was out-acted by a broken urinal.

Yeah, that's not filling me with hope. I'll stick to the books and the games, I think. (well, I'll probably check it out, but with low expectations)

message 32: by Eva (new)

Eva That last trailer looked like it will be a fun series. The early "trailers" were just screen tests they did before any kind of look was decided on, it's unfair to judge the series by a screen test.

I personally don't like the Witcher's articifially low, 'I'm too cool and jaded for my britches' way of speaking, but he's always talked like that, can't fault poor Henry Cavill. And his pretty face finally explains why all women immediately throw themselves at the Witcher - something the books and games never could. Now it all makes sense!

message 33: by John (Taloni) (new)

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5194 comments ^I suppose that's intended as a derogatory term? I know little about the Witcher, really just the one book we read here. Trailer looks great though. I didn't particularly like Cavill as Superman but he seems to be in his element here.

Fredrik (fredurix) | 228 comments This latest trailer looks promising. I'm still in :)

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Hmmmm, I'm hesitantly back in. I wasn't interested after much of the early stuff but that trailer shows some potential. I'm not convinced that will be reflected in a actual episode, but we shall see.

I was a little confused about the order of these books, but found the article helpful.

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 1638 comments It is based on the Ciri Saga .
Book One - Blood of Elves
Book Two- The Time of Contempt
Book Three-Baptism Of Fire
Book Four - The Tower of the Swallow
Book Five - Lady of the Lake
I really enjoyed the Saga.

The Netflix show will truly start with the saga after season two. The first two seasons focus on The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny. Also, the first season apparently features a lot of Yennefer's origins which have been written by the TV writers.

message 39: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments I watched the first episode and... honestly it was one of the worst things I've ever seen. I've never read the books or played the game so maybe that missing is impacting my enjoyment. Then again, my partner really enjoyed it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've only watched the first episode too. It was disappointing and I have played the games and read one book.

I'll give it a few more episodes. We haven't seen Yennefer yet.
Her story and Ciri's may yet save it.

I have watched Eps. 2 & 3 and I am liking it now, mainly, as I thought, for the Yennefer and Ciri storylines.

message 42: by Trike (new)

Trike | 11196 comments Episode 3 was the best so far (currently on 4). But the dialogue is weirdly modern. When the bard mentioned “reverse psychology”, it dropped me out of the story.

message 43: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Murrell | 367 comments True. I hate it when my fantasy characters hunting demons and monsters don't speak like people did "back then." Wait a minute . . .

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments I think Trike was referring more to the anachronism than simply modern words themselves. The term 'reverse psychology' is not something that would have been understood in the time period in which the story is set.

Personally, I view these kinds of anachronisms as translations, because I am certain people still understood ideas such as 'if I pretend I don't want it, he won't want it, then I can have it'. There may have been some other term or way of understanding thing behaviour back then that has been lost to time.

But I understand why it annoys some people. There are things that chuck me out of a thing thst don't bother anyone else.

message 45: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 1638 comments Kill the Bard!!! I like the character in the books but this TV version stinks. The Show has already change one thing regarding Ciri which is disappointing for me but I understand the why. Carvil is fine as the Witcher so that fear is gone.

I was only teasing Trike. He doesn't have to justify what pulls him out of a story any more than someone has to justify what draws them in. I was simply taking a shot at an underhanded pitch. The Witcher is clearly not set on Earth (what with all the magic and demons), so people don't have to speak in ye olde English or any other Eurpean dialect simply because they swing swords. The following scene about some good ol' boys hunting an undead ice dragon could be just as likely:

“Wee doggy, fellas, y’all knuckle-heads need to listen up. We done got us a critter causing a ruckus.”
“Could you describe the ruckus, Cooter?”
“Now damn it, Cletus, if you’d shut your pie hole a minute, I’m fixin’ to tell ya. It seems that Zeke, the zombie ice dragon, done lost his mind. He chicken fried the Sanders’ plantation just last night. We don’t take too kindly to that around here. I reckon we oughta hunt him down and make him good and kilt. Once ol’ Zeke is dead, we gonna have a hootenanny. If you ain’t never tried dragon jerky, mmmm, you in fo’ a treat. John Boy’s gonna bust out his fiddle and we’ll get that shindig started.”
“So sayeth the king.”

The 3 separate timelines, for each main character, threw me for a bit in the first 4 episodes.

I expect they will come together in the second half of the season.

message 48: by Sean (new)

Sean | 367 comments Just finished the first season. Very much enjoyed it. I actually liked some of the changes they made to the plots from the books, since it makes them more connected.

I also like that they decided to go with adapting plots from the short stories first, rather than jumping into the novels. I read the first novel when it was initially translated into English back in 2008, and that starts with Ciri being raised at Kaer Mohren, with no explanation as to who Ciri is or why she's there. Because all of that was in the second collection of short stories, which hadn't been translated yet.

I still don't understand why the publisher went with that decision.

message 49: by Trike (new)

Trike | 11196 comments Stephen wrote: "Kill the Bard!!! I like the character in the books but this TV version stinks. ."

I don’t recall the bard from the one book I read, but he feels like he’s from a different show. The song lyrics all sound like they were written last week, not a thousand years ago.

The “Toss a Coin to your Witcher” ditty references Elf on the Shelf and ride-alongs. It’s just odd. https://youtu.be/yAQziayOKyU

For comedies like the brilliant and over-the-top Galavant he’d be fine, but here he doesn’t fit. https://youtu.be/QWnDwM0RSX4

I mean, it’s cool if you want to make a version of Thor: Ragnarok, but then you have to go all in and do that.

message 50: by Sean (new)

Sean | 367 comments The bard's name is Dandelion in the books. The show went with his Polish name (Jaskier, "Buttercup" in English), presumably because "Dandelion" sounds like a weird name.

Personally, I liked that they included him a bit more. He brings a certain kind of levity to some scenes - the beginning of episode 4 comes to mind, where he's getting a story about Geralt from some townsfolk.

It's pretty fun to watch him and Geralt bounce off each other.
